Jack Reacher series being developed by Amazon

https://www.google.com/amp/s/variety...203267743/amp/

Lee Child is on board as an executive producer. Tom Cruise not affiliated.

Hopefully, the title character will be more appropriately cast.

Isn't he built more like Dave Bautista than Cruise?

Good call. I'm so out of touch, I had to look up who that was.
When I read the books, I always pictured a young Dolph Lundgren.

I pictured a less hairy version of Sebastien Chabal, mostly because of his French roots. Bautista is too big...Reacher isn't a weightlifter.

I've heard Joel Kinnaman suggested. He's a decent actor, and he looks the part.

Kinnaman would be good. I doubt they could get him, but I have always envisioned Tom Hardy as Reacher.

Now that you mention it, I'd almost be surprised if Kinnaman didn't get the part. He's close enough on size, the right age and well known enough to give the project some star appeal.

Say what you want about Tom Cruise, but that first Jack Reacher movie was loads of fun.

The second one...not so much.

I could see Paul Telfer who played the roided-up Marine in NCIS.

Reacher in the books is 6'5" and about 220 lbs and it is frequently mentioned that he is noticeably big. He turns heads and stands out in a crowd. If you're going to try to really match his written size, even Kinnaman is too short by a few inches and too rangy/thin (though I think he's an excellent actor).

I hope they do a good job with it. Those Cruise movies sucked eggs.

ETA: Now I see it's being developed by the guy who created the TV show Scorpion, which is... not a hopeful sign, IMO.

Joel who? Oh, yeah, the Altered Carbon guy (and Hanna, and...)

He'd be great, the other suggestions are muscle-bound thug types, not very intelligent-looking. Reacher is smart, and dedicated.
Which was why Cruise did a great job. I've read all the books and wanted to hate the casting ("He's half the size! Are the tickets 50% off too?"). I acted the same way when Tim Burton cast his Batman as... Mr. Mom?!?

But I loved the Cruise movies, because his Reacher had the intelligence and the intensity, and a laser-sharp sense of justice.
So hope they find a big guy that can pull that off.

Right. He's intimidating, scary. People avoid eye contact and stay out of his way, but that could play out in a different way. Considering he wears the same clothes for several days and doesn't use deodorant, people would also avoid him because he's a nasty, smelly hobo.

I was impressed by Rory McCann's acting in Game of Thrones. Give him some hair and he could be Jack Reacher.

Excellent suggestions for the part of Reacher. When I read the books, I always pictured Steven Seagal as playing Reacher. But, at 67, he's now far too old.

Man - was a huge fan of the books. Has there EVER been a worse miscasting in the history of film?

It depends on the precise Reacher story being adapted, doesn't it? We know he is canonically 6'4" or 6'5", 220-250 pounds, and there are episodes where his exact size (or lack thereof!!) plays a crucial role in the plot, but other times things hinge on his skills as a sniper, or as an investigator, and it is not mentioned how big he is.

He's never what you'd call well-dressed, but I don't remember him ever appearing as a "nasty, smelly hobo". IIRC he buys a brand-new shirt pretty much every day, and sturdy pants that last him a few days (and he sleeps in a motel bed, not in his clothes). When people are on the lookout for him it's invariably for a "big, scary-looking guy", not a "hobo-looking guy".

I always thought Sean Bean would make a good Reacher. He's prob too old to do any but the most recent novels tho.

I've read every Reacher book by Lee Child. Pretty sure in every novel, it mentions his size.

When I discovered and read a bunch of Reacher books, the TV show Chuck was airing, so to me Reacher will always be Adam Baldwin.

I think David Bautista would do well, unless he is too old.

Hell, The Rock could do it. He's got the action chops. He may not want to do TV though.

I had always thought Ray Stevenson would have been a perfect choice, but he's probably aged out by now.

No, I believe his size is always a factor in every novel. It's entirely integral to the character and casting a 5'6" dweeb* as Reacher was a huge mistake, box office draw or not. Yes, he is a sniper and a great investigator - the latter, in particular, is usually in play. But it's his size coupled with his pre-emptive aggressiveness that makes him an unstoppable force. It's not fancy karate moves: he takes out crowds of opponents with brute force, stomps people's knees, elbows their noses, pounds their heads, etc. Basically "one hit and you're down." And it's his dogged unstoppable-ness that makes him so appealing, IMHO.

*Yes, I'm being overly harsh. Sue me.

Googling for "tall actors" who have sufficient bulk (unlike Padalecki) but not so swole as to detract from the role: (Links are to images on their IMDb pages.)

Joe Manganiello 6'5" 236lbs
Armie Hammer 6'5" 207lbs <== too thin and/or pretty?
Richard Ashton 6'7" ???lbs
Adrian Bouchet 6'4" 238lbs
Pablo Schreiber 6'5" 210lbs (see below)
Terrell Carter 6'5" ???lbs

Pablo Schrieber is mainly famous for being Mad Sweeney (the Leprechaun) on American Gods and "porn 'stache" from Orange Is the New Black. He appears to be unavailable, though, as IMDb lists him as currently in production on a new tv show (on Showtime) based on the Halo videogame, where he (of course) plays Master Chief. Side note: I am super pumped to watch a Halo series on Showtime with Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief!

I agree. Hardy is too tall. They need to cast a 5' Asian woman, just to make the Child fans implode over the internet.

How about Ray Stevenson? He may be a bit too old and a bit too British, but he's physically perfect and a better actor than most.

A short Asian woman playing an unapologetically rude loner who doesn't work well with others and doesn't like following "the rules"? I would love that! I would watch each episode five times! I even have the perfect actress for it!

Would the showrunners for the Reacher show wait until Fresh Off the Boat is done filming, though?

Yeah - sometimes I thought the massiveness a tad overdone - I mean, a solid 6'2 would've certainly been sufficient given his entire package. But I would be surprised if his size weren't at least mentioned in every book - such as the sleeves on his thrift shop shirts being too short. And certainly, if you read more than 1 book, you would've gotten the message the he was one big dude.

I'm not at all a Tom Cruise fan, but I am willing to admit that he can have a certain type of appeal in a certain type of role. But Reacher is a freaking force of nature - and you can't emote THAT!

James Hong.

Guy: "I'm looking for Jack Reacher."
Hong: That's me.
Guy: I don't get it. I thought you'd be a tall dangerous looking white guy.

Hong: YOU WERE NOT PUT UPON THIS EARTH TO 'GET IT', WHITE BOY.

Guy: They told me you were an American.
Hong: I was born in Minneapolis, you racist fuck.

Yeah, he's no youngster. In story, his mother was a young teenager during WWII, and Reacher was badly wounded in the Beirut Marine barracks bombing in 1983, so the birth year that wiki offers of 1960 seems about right.

They'll adjust that for the show, I'd think, to make him an Iraq/Afghanistan vet.

Indeed. I don't actually care that much that whoever plays Reacher is appropriately sized even, it has just got to be someone who can play the role of knight-errant convincingly.

The guy who plays Amos on the Expanse would be a good fit. Nicely terse, big enough. Probably a little too busy.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is 48, about Reacher's age through many of the books, and he's 6'2 or 6'3. He's already pretty large, around 200 lbs. Give him a trainer, and he could easily be 220.

Have a look at him in this shot - imagine him without that mustache and shorter hair, and he's a pretty good Reacher.

Come to think of it, an even better fit would be Tom Hopper, the guy who played Dickon Tarley. He's 6'5" and 230 lbs, and would be just about perfect.
