It's been quite a while, but Maggie, how are you doing?

I was reminded of this when reading an update about a coworker's husband who is in a similar situation.

Maggie's last post was December 30th, so she's hopefully somewhere getting successful treatment.

She was on the boards this morning, albeit not posting. Hopefully she'll see this thread and know that we are all wishing her the very best.

Her last activity on the board was a week or so ago. She's been much on my mind as a co-worker's husband is dealing with colon cancer as well (and is not doing well).

RIP, she has passed away:
Quote:
Thank you all for your help in getting Maggie & Nico moved and continuing her medical care. We had hoped we would get at least a year with her close by but the cancer became chemo resistant and the meds were no longer helping her. She decided to stop treatment and enjoy the balance of her life; close to family & seeing her friends.

We had several good months, but in June it started to get more difficult. We were able to make a trip north for a 4th of July family celebration but after that, even day trips became painful. She decided to go on hospice care in mid-July because the trips to Kaiser Hollywood were too hard anymore.

She was enjoying having visitors the last few weeks, but on the night of 9/11 through the early morning 9/12 she had a big change in her cognitive abilities. She was restless; her breathing became shallow and she was having more pain. Her nursing staff gave her a patch for pain and she slept a while, then slowly faded away around 5:40pm.

She is gone.

People keep asking what they can do so we decided to reopen this GoFundMe for those that want to contribute to her final expenses.

She planned the whole funeral/memorial herself, preparing for months even when she was working. I did the final research for her at home & she made the choices between options. This is her last big extravaganza & she planned it with love.

Geez, Maggie, that really bites.

I do have a distant friend (quite distant, she lives in the Netherlands) who took years to win this fight. She was at death's door many times but kept fighting. She is now a spokesperson for those who have 'ostomy bags (she's got three). She is as tough and determined as they come. But it hadn't gotten to her lungs (liver yes). I don't know where she found the energy to fight as hard as she did, but she made it, and is still being closely watched medically of course.

Strength training is the only thing I know to recommend. You might want to consider surgery for some of it. My mother had part of a lung removed (wandering breast cancer) and that prolonged her life by a year or two, but each case is different as you know.

You've got a whole heckuva lot on your plate right now so please focus on what is most important to you and yours. I wish you the best of what you choose for your life.

I know this was intended to be an inspirational comment, and I don't want to detract from the good intentions. However, I would like to point out that the people who survive cancer don't survive because they fought harder to live than those who end up dying of it.

Your friend is very, very lucky that her cancer did not spread beyond the liver. That is the only reason she is still alive - because in some cases, people who have their color cancer spread to the liver haven't had it spread any further than that and the liver tumors can be killed to stop its spread to other organs. If she had been unlucky enough to have tumors in other body parts at diagnosis as Maggie unfortunately did, the sad truth is that she would have ended up dying of the illness too.

With many types of cancer, it doesn't matter how hard you fight or how desperately you want to live. I give Maggie credit for trying to maintain a positive attitude while accepting that the cancer was not curable. That is just as strong and courageous to me as anyone who manages to survive cancer.

Maggie fought a good fight. I am sorry she is gone. Though I did not know her, I followed her story and found it educational and inspirational. The board is poorer for her loss.

RIP, Maggie. I will think of you and appreciate your contributions.
