Have you visited Sol yet? I haven't played for a while, but it's one of my goals.

Worst part of being deep into uninhabited space is the long trip back for repairs after too many close encounters with stars.

Sure have! Mother Gaia operates some pretty stations, was running missions for them prior to mining Painite.

I went weeks without finding one, then discovered three in about four hours. Still no neutron stars or black holes, and only a couple of ammonia worlds. But if they ever get the terraforming equipment out to the terraform candidates I've found, half the galaxy's going to be named after me.

I've an idea where to look for a black hole. Problem is getting that far out.

Docked my Asp and bought a Diamondback Explorer then outfitted for such a trip.

Isn't an Asp a better ship than a DB Explorer in basically every way? This seems like a downgrade unless you think there's a good chance of losing the ship.

Depends on the configuration. I've outfitted the DB specifically for exploration, maximum jump range is something like 30 light years. I've added an A4 class repair drone so there's no need to head back for repairs any time soon.

I have the Asp outfitted as a multipurpose vessel skewed toward combat and can mine in a pinch. Maximum range is a bit less than 18 light years.

Couple thousand LY out from inhabited space, spotted something interesting on the map about 700 from my current location. Could be a black hole? Going to check it out...

Happened across my first black hole but I'm not the first one here. Same with the neutron star in the previous system.

So have you guys seen this smuggling job?

You can do a lot of cool stuff with heat management in this game, it looks like.

I haven't played yet. Going to start today after I'm done grading, but my two goals are to visit Sol and Sagittarius A* (the black hole at the center of the galaxy).

Smuggling does get easier as commanders increase their relationship with the local authorities. Make friends with 'em and they won't pay much attention to minor infractions.

Wasn't able to investigate any other black dots on the galaxy map. Screwed up about 10K ly from inhabited space and cracked the canopy so I headed back. Got 30 mil out of the trip.

Going to head out again. Think I'll see how close I can get to the far edge of the galaxy, ~31 ly at a time, stopping by Sag A and the Great Annihilator on my way back.

Played Elite Dangerous and was pretty blown away. Even my wife was impressed and wanted to play...but then...I found out about Star Citizen.

Game over man...game over. Star Citizen wins by a trillion miles.

Of course Elite Dangerous has the advantage of actually being out. Star Citizen is a long way off and a month or so ago there was a bit of a backer's revolt as time estimates kept slipping and there was no sign of stuff that had been promised.

And should have pretty much everything that Star Citizen currently promises* by Christmas, plus more expansions down the road.

*I think player bases will be the only thing missing and even those should be in eventually.

On second thought, this has got to be wrong. I now suspect what really closes any given system's objects to discoveries and detailed scans is when that system becomes populated, and who knows when other systems will become populated beyond the ones which currently are.

Newbie alert!

Elite Dangerous is on sale on Steam, so I finally picked it up, and have been playing through the tutorials.

When attempting to dock, all I could imagine was a fictional docking authority manager saying to his or her underlings, "Did you SEE that moron? Blast 'im before he does any damage!"

Starting to get fun, though.

One of us!

So far, I've made it to the Iowhail systems, 16K ly out. I was right, there are some undiscovered black holes around here.

I upgraded to an Adder. Woo-hoo! It's working out well as an entry-level exploration vessel. I'm traveling pretty light—nothing installed on hard points, so no combat for me—but luckily avoiding interdiction has been no problem. Also, I've upgraded most components to lighter versions. I've yet to be the first to any star systems, though. I've probably only traveled a few hundred light years so far.

Docking is getting easier. Luckily, I only earned a small fine once (for blocking the airlock; going too slow I guess) or twice (for carrying illegal weapons).

My worst habit is not slowing down out of supercruise soon enough, and thereby overshooting my rendezvous, or, worse, being emergency forced into normal space.

My in-game handle is Zaparthes. Feel free to friend me!

Highest purchase priority for now: a better scanner.

Kuk causes some amusement here as it is the local slang term for penis. I have a friend go on a pilgrimage there.

Approaching the galactic core, seeing more solar systems with black holes as their primary.

Guessing I'll be near the galactic edge in about 14K ly more. Furthest system I've found would still be another 9K out, don't think I'll be able to get there on ~31 ly jumps. Systems out there are spread far & wide.

It's a long haul but black hole hunters should head up to Dryau Phylio AQ-Y E1330. Lots of systems with at least one in that neighborhood.

I've been bounty hunting in my new viper. Most of the time, I do pretty well, but occasionally I get my ass handed to me. I've managed to make a profit at it, but only just.

Not much point in joining anyone while so far out -- 28.55K ly from Ghekreep, my current base of operations, which itself is Federation but too far from anyone's control. I expect to join Felicia Winters upon my return.

Getting to the galactic edge is taking longer than I thought.

I try to get some exploration done on my lunch hour but, of course, their servers are wonky today. I hope they get righted by 6 so I can get in after work.

With yesterday's galactic map update, I started to wonder if there even is an edge to the galaxy. If I'm not close in another 15K I'm a-turnin' 'round.

I've had enough of these black holes! At this point, my ship is held together with the handy commander's secret weapon: Duct Tape.

33.5K ly out. Might as well keep going until this thing flies apart or I run out of jumps in this direction.

Visited one Leonard Nimoy Station, orbiting the planet Vulcan. LHS 3006 star system.

It was pretty inside, but lame for outfitting with a very small, sad shipyard.

Looks like I can go another 1500 ly if she holds together. There are still more stars I wasn't previously aware of up to 4000 ly out but those are so spread out that getting to 'em is probably impossible without a flying gas tank and massive jump drive.

Little things that make me love this game, #57: I just stopped off at the Tannhäuser Gate (Aztlan star system), and watched the C-beams glitter in the dark.

I've been flying around doing various things like bounty hunting, light trading, and exploring in my Diamondback Scout, truly an outstanding jack-of-all-trades ship.

I also picked up a flight stick. Combat now seems almost too easy...

ETA next stop: Acokwang.

Really? Acokwang? Really?

It was a binary system of binary, blue T Tauri stars (four stars total.) Plus two huge, metal-rich worlds with outposts and a class I gas giant.

22 more jumps and that will be as far as I go before the long voyage home starts. If only there was a Bird-of-Prey I could steal.

The size of the map is basically a scale model of our real life galaxy but with lots of content generated by the game. The use of generated content increases as one travels away from our solar system.

I'm currently 43.2K ly from Earth, in the direction of the Pipe Nebula.

I should say, the Diamondback Scout is very good for bounty hunting, especially if you take advantage of its agility—I took out a "Dangerous"-piloted Python yesterday—and is decent for exploring, having an acceptable jump capacity, 16-ton fuel tank, and room for size 3 scoop, detailed surface scanner, etc. For the price, I'm thrilled with its role as a "combat explorer," and it's fun to fly.

But it's shit for trading. If I drop the fuel scoop, I can get it to 16t of cargo. I could drop shields and the scanner as well, but ... If I want to get serious about trading, I need something else.

Type 6? I guess...

But my DBS is all decked out and I wanna keep it! ...grrr...

Right. That's about enough of this adventure.

Byeia Aoscs NT-Y D1-1, 43.9K ly from Ghekreep, 43.95K from LHS 3447, 44K from Earth.

Think I'll hang around here for awhile before heading home.

Well just back into this, took forever to update the game, and now have a long grind of trading ahead to get something decent.

Is that the "normal" way of building up credits? I was doing this before I stopped playing when my computer starting doing random freezes (although they weren't quite as random when playing ED or Kerbal Space Program), but it just seemed that it would take forever to be able to get a ship more suited for exploration that way.

Of course, this assumes that I don't run into yet another ship with its weapons pointed straight at me that somehow manages to stick to my tail like glue.

Took about 33 days to get this far; wonder if I can get back in fewer without losing my ship.

Will have to start back tomorrow, too many things going on to play today.

Yeesh!

Quarter of the way home, entered system on a heading directly between an A/K binary. Still in one piece but hope to not find many more of those.
