I still play practically every night.

I can't play the medic. I bought her back in PTR and I just get wiped with her. I'm not saying she's bad, just that I'm bad with her. I also can't play Kael or Johanna.

My favorites:

Aba
Murky
Leoric
Kerrigan
Valla

I've hit quite a slump in Hero League. Slowly moving up MMR in QM.

I loathe Infernal Shrines. It's way too snowbally for me.

I'm apparently super good at Abby for some reason. I only have him at level 4, but other than Li Li I think he's the only person I've gotten complements on for playing well. I even managed to locust back door a base once. Gazlowe is the one I just plain don't get.

Wow, you really like making your teammates cringe when they see you show up, don't you?

Well, nobody ever bothers telling anyone that they play Raynor well, know what I'm saying?

And Gazlowe is one that I do get. He's another loner, like Silvanas. Xplodium and lazor are devastating if they hit, but really easy for an intelligent enemy to avoid... so you use them against unintelligent enemies, like minions, mercenaries, and map-monsters. Drop a turret, a bomb, and another turret on top of a minion camp, then start charging up your lazor, and it'll go off at just about the same time as the bomb, and now the camp is mostly finished.

The biggest problem I have with Abathur is that how well you do depends so much on your teammates' skill level. I tried him a bit when he was on rotation, and I'd get things like symbioting a melee hero, and then all of a sudden the hero (at 90% health) turns around and starts running away. Great, what do I do with that?

A good Abathur is the white whale of HotS. If you see one, it's not for long and nobody will believe you afterwards.

I also thought I was really good with him, and then my rank started going up and I was... repeatedly dissuaded of that notion.

I mean, I don't think I'm great at him, I'd get creamed in HL, but I think I'm pretty good for a pub who only plays QM.

A buddy and I joke about an SCV character who doesn't take part in combat, but just runs around the map harvesting resources for experience points, building bunkers, etc.
I would totally play this.

Incidentally, Gaz iss also my favourite hero. >.>

No doubt.

Seeing him (or Murky, or Vikings) picked in Hero League is funny because there are only two scenarios.

Scenario 1: Somebody on your team picks him.
Response: OH LORD WHO IS THIS GUY AND WHY DOES HE WANT US TO LOSE?

Scenario 2: Somebody on the other team picks him.
Response: OH LORD WE'RE UP AGAINST SOME SORT OF SAVANT NOBODY PICKS ABATHUR/MURKY/VIKINGS IN HERO LEAGUE UNLESS THEY'RE A PRO.

I don't play them in HL, only QM, and I wreck with them in QM. If I don't have at least double the xp of my entire team I consider it a loss as Abby, even if we win the match. I remember one match where someone said, early on, "great, we have a bad Abathur." I ignored him. But after my locus were bombarding the core and won the game I demanded an apology.

I also had a match where a Zeratul chastised me for "feeding." By the end of the match, where I had the highest siege, highest xp, most takedowns, and least deaths he admitted he was wrong.

But yeah, I'm not confident enough for HL. Plus, I haven't found the right comp. I usually need to be a tank or healer.

Reminds me of one game as Silvanas, where I was literally the only hero on my team to come within sight of the enemy core between 40% and full shields and game over.

On Azmodan free week a couple weeks ago I was Sylvanas in a few games with my friend as a Sylvanas/Azmodan duo. The push was ridiculous. On the first angel in Battlefield of Eternity we did damage to their tier 2 fort just by split pushing.

Yup, still around. Chronos#1770

What do people think of Towers of Doom? It feels to me like they've thrown out the baby with the bathwater. Recapturing your own tower is significantly easier than capturing an enemy tower, with the result that there's an equilibrium at three for each team, with the result that it feels like pushing is completely irrelevant. Plus, thanks to all of the wasted space at the cores, it's effectively the smallest map in the game. It's not quite as bad as I thought at first, thanks to the mercenaries (which do 1 core damage each if they reach the killzone), but I think I like it even less than Infernal Shrines.

I haven't played it enough to get a good opinion. My Heroes bestie just had a kid and his time is (for some unfathomable reason) quite limited.

Cool, I can add you guys!

As for Towers of Doom, the map looks beautiful but my winrate in it is abysmal. It requires too much coordination from a random QM team, especially in that late game moment when three shrines are up. It also doesn't help that my specialists feel kind of useless on it (I play lots of Zagara and Abathur).

Aba would be good with a mine build.

There's a "refer a friend" event going on right now. If someone wants a referral code let me know via PM (don't wanna spam on here). If you get to level ten you get a free hero, or something.

I don't really care for Towers of Doom. First, it seems like it should have been out for Halloween. Plus, it doesn't seem like it's possible to come back from a near defeat like the other maps.

It's worse than that - it's a free mount, and it's bad because it's a Starcraft vulture. That makes it the only Terran mount, and my favorite character is a Terran.

In order to get the mount, you have to "recruit" four players to the game via the referral code, all of whom have to reach level 10. Since all of my friends who would be playing HotS are already playing it, the only way to make this happen will be if I create a handful of sock accounts, friend myself, and grind each one to 10.

The Blizzard boards are already discussing how an influx of seasoned players (many of whom are completionists) all grinding to level 10 is going to crap all over the newbie MMR matches, which means a lot of genuinely new players are going to get pushed away from the game when they get repeatedly stomped in public games.

As I understand it, the established player gets (at best) a mount and a picture frame, while the new players get (at best) a picture frame and two heroes (Raynor and Sylvanas).

The choice of mount is annoying to me. There's nothing that really connects it to the promotion: It's not like it's a Friendship Unicorn, or something. Rather, it's a mount that's very strongly connected to one particular hero. If someone wants to play Raynor with all the bells and whistles, they'll want to buy that mount.

And recruiting four players is really over the top. Yeah, I get that they want people to recruit as many folks as possible, but very, very few people are going to be able to pull that off (at least, in the way Blizzard wants them to), and there isn't really any substantive reward before that (a picture frame isn't worth much), so most folks aren't even going to bother trying.

Four is over-the-top of course but I understand why it's 4. Blizzard knows that almost no one will actually bring FOUR new friends... but they're hoping that at least a percentage of people will recruit maybe one or two new players, and smurf the rest by themselves.

It bothers me though that this mount is very specific to Starcraft and that's the part that makes no sense.

Well, at least they released the "colourful vulture" for money.

I thought about making smurf accounts to get the vulture, go to the point where I had to do the tutorial all over again, and... nope.

So I've been keeping up with MFPallytime, one of the bigger names in HotS videos. I highly recommend checking him out. I usually get something out of each of his videos, even when he's playing a character I don't know. His livestreams aren't very helpful because they're more about goofing around, but the other stuff is good because he talks through his thought process and builds in a very constructive manner.

Anyway, last night I tried dropping into the MFPT channel and was able to get into a couple different QM groups. Had some of the best games I've played in quite some time. Really friendly folks and a lot of quality players.

I also sent a few friend requests out the other day, so if you got one from a name you don't recognize it's probably me.

What's your name? I did get a request from a name I didn't recognize (can't remember what it was), and it gave me an error message when I tried to view profile, so I rejected it.

Murky Christmas, everyone, and a happy new mrglbrgle!

For the first time in, well, ever, Murky is finally on free rotation. He's in the very last slot, so you'll need to be level 15 to choose him, but now you too can know the joy of sliming people and slapping them with a wet trout.

Just started playing this, and after a decade of Blizzard games it's pretty fun. I always liked hero missions in the various *craft games. I always liked playing Anuburak back in Warcraft3 so of course that was the first hero I bought with gold.

Trying to play a healer like LiLi with AI team-mates is an experience.

Funny, I've heard of League of Legends, but never knew what genre it was...I thought it was some kind of third person shooter, sort of like WoW PvP.

I've started to play a lot again in the last couple of weeks. I'm a lot worse than I used to be, it would seem. I'm not sure if I'm actually worse, or everyone just got better around me - I played the first couple of months the game was out and not much since then. My placement matches for hero league put me at level 32 which is below average and pretty poor. It's weird because my teammates usually make much poorer decisions than me, and I'm often/usually the best player on my team, so it seems like my rating should be higher. Maybe I'm not evaluating myself very well and I'm worse than I think. But I rarely make the deliberately bad plays or super boneheaded moves I see all the time out of people around my rank.

I hope what they did with Li-Ming and Xul doesn't become a trend, because that shit undermines your credibility. Li-Ming was extremely over-tuned when she was dropped into the game, only to be nerfed into being moderately above average in a couple of weeks. It stank of a cash grab - releasing a hero, letting people buy her and run wild for a couple of weeks, and then balance it. But then they made it even worse with their next hero. Li-Ming peaked at around 58% winrate, but Xul hit 63%, which is obscene. Same pattern with him - nerfed after a couple of weeks. They've release heroes in the past that were well balanced and even poor, so it's not like they've always done this. But don't they play test this shit? There's no way you could accidentally release a hero that had a 63% win rate and climbing without knowing.

I would actually like to spend some money on the game - I like to throw some money at F2P games I actually play - but everything is so ridiculously expensive. Most heroes and most skins are $10. Buying a few outfits for my favorite heroes and maybe a mount or two would easily add up to more than you pay on day one for big AAA games. If the microtransactions were actually micro - and you could get skins for $1-3, I'd probably spend $30 on the game. But I'm not going to spend $30 on 2 skins and a mount.

Still, it's been fun. I'm getting really good at Malfurion and I've been playing him more. Sometimes I feel like I'm carrying my team and yet we still end up losing to something stupid at the end.

And those winrates are even more inexcusable for new heroes. People haven't gotten a chance to get used to them yet and figure out all the details of builds and playstyles... and they're still winning that much?

Li Ming, though, I think is probably especially hard to balance because she's so swingy. Kill the first enemy hero in a teamfight, and you can kill all of them. If that first hero manages to get away, though, then she does nothing. There's no balance point where a few heroes die on each side before the fight falls apart.

Yeah, this bugged me for a long time too, but then I remind myself that this is Blizzard and I shouldn't expect them to change a business model that has been making them obscene amounts of money for years. They do the same thing with pets and mounts in WoW.

I have spent about 30 bucks on the game since I started playing in the beta. I think I have purchased:

- The five-dollar starter pack during the beta, so that I could get into HL more quickly.
- The Marshal Raynor skin/mount pack and the Apothecary Morales skin during half-price sales.
- The Space Lord Leoric bundle at launch. Did I have a Blizzard gift card? Yes, but there are no excuses here. He has a purple space motorcycle and they marketed him as an 80s cartoon villain. They got me, guys. They got me but good.

And if I'm being honest, I'm waiting for them to finally put out a decent skin for Johanna. She's my best character and she has probably the most boring set of skins in the entire game. In my heart of hearts I'm hoping for a Terran space marine skin.

Oh man, I need some Azmodan, Lord of the Dunk

I really wish Azmo was better. Lobbing his Q across the map to kill an enemy that thought they got away is one of the most fun things to do in the game, but he's just not good enough to play regularly.

Huh, he's my second-best hero. I think the key with him is to watch your own minions to tell where the enemy minions are before you can see them, so you can aim/time your fireball to land right on top of them. If nobody responds to you, then you can push a lane very quickly this way, and if someone does respond, then you're doing damage to them via long-range skills when they can't reach you to damage you. You can also quickly respond to a weakness in another lane by putting your Demon Lieutenants there, before any actual hero can make it there.

I play rocket league, which uses the same sort of matchmaking/ranking system that counterstrike uses, which is in theory the same as what HOTS uses. If you go on the steam forums for rocket league, you'll hear stupid stuff like:

"I worked my way up to challenger 2 and now I can't get further, I only win 50% of my matches and my teammates are always worse than me, I'm being held back, it's not fair, I can't progress"

Now this comes from ignorance and delusion. The ignorance part is that they don't understand that ultimately, the goal of a ladder/ranking system is to put you up against the level of your competition. So 50% win rate is the desired outcome. If you play better, you play against better players, until you've found your place on the ladder and you win 50% against equals. You're not supposed to just keep climbing like an RPG character goes up in levels. You're placed relative to other people.

The "omg I'm so good but my teammates hold me back" is just delusion. Rocket League has excellent matchmaking. The vast majority of the time you get a fair match with people who are similarly skilled to you. If you think you're always way better than your teammates, you're wrong - you're just ignoring your own flaws and exaggerating theirs. The system works - you find your place, you stay there unless your skills improve.

The reason I say all this is that I understand how a ladder system should work, and how people fall trap to blaming everyone else when they find that they stop progressing.

Now, that said, HOTS hero league matchmaking does not ring true to me the way the Rocket League system does, even though they're supposed to use similar systems. I'm a pretty average HOTS player. I dive too much, I don't know all the different hero builds and how to fight them. But other than that, I avoid making horribly stupid mistakes. I'm not off in a corner of the map laning with malfurion while my teammates die on the objective. When my teammates make a heroic effort to save me while I escape with 5% hp, I don't immediately turn around and go back in the fight and die. I don't shoot at their tank while their exposed healer goes unscathed. I'm not great, but I'm not a bad player in terms of fundamental mistakes.

But when I got done with my placement matches for hero league, it put me at rank 35, which is pretty scrubby. Here's the thing: I don't belong in that league. When I say that, I know I sound like all the rocket league players I was talking about who bitch about a broken matchmaking system they don't understand. But when I play a game full of level 35s like myself, they make "play with their own poop" mistakes. Horrible, stupid, mistakes from utterly awful players. All the time. These are not people on my level. Again, I'm not great. But I belong above the HEY LET'S DIE TO THEIR TOWERS IN AN UNCONTESTED LANE players.

So, easy enough, if I'm playing well, I should win more games, and my MMR will go up. But it hasn't. I'm actually down to 37. Rocket League delivers a balanced, close game about 90% of the time. HOTS delivers a balanced, close game about 30% of the time. But I seem to have the playing with their own poop players on my team disproportionately. In theory, both teams should have an equal number of awful players, but my winrate in these awful games is around 46%, and a lot of the games I win require me to play extremely well and carry my team. I'm starting at the scrub tier and actually losing ground because, even though the game says we're all level 32-38, my team seems to have more than their fair share of utterly incompetent players.

As an example, tonight I played a match with balanced hero league ranks. And we actually had a better draft.

My team was utterly incompetent. We racked up 12 deaths in the first 5 minutes, with no kills. I, as muradin, lead both siege and hero damage for most of the game - even though there was a Sgt Hammer and a Li-Ming on my team. I also was the only person on my team not to die by the 10 minute mark - everyone else had at least 4 deaths, some up to 8 or 9. It was just an utter stomp the whole time. My teammates did not do anything useful for the entire game, even by accident. I lead them in every statistical category as the tank. We lost the crypt of the spider queen map in 12 minutes, 13 seconds. It's damn near impossible to lose a game that quickly. Do you know how bad you have to be to do that? It's astounding.

When it came time to assess the rank points after the game, I expected to lose very few. A typical game for me results in +/- 70-110 points. Clearly this group of players was better than us, the matchmaking rating of my teammates would've been awful. And in this sort of system, if a much better team beats a much worse one, they lose few points. What was the rank point loss? 300 points. I went down 2 ranks. For losing with the worst team I've ever seen.

Rocket League provides a balanced, even match almost every time. Rocket League quickly finds the level you belong in, and puts you in the right games. Rocket League accurately reflects your true skill level when it gives you your division, equivalent to ranks. This game does none of those things. There's something extremely funky about the matchmaking that makes ranks very inaccurate, does not correctly get you moving in the right direction, and does not create balanced matches. Even if you end up with a 50% win rate, Rocket League gets you there by giving you really close, down to the buzzer games between equally matched opponents that could go either way. HOTS gets you there by giving you 4 games where you utterly stomp the enemy and then 4 gmes where they utterly stomp you, and 2 good games if you're lucky.

I don't have enough data to guess at it, but something seems deeply flawed about their matchmaking and ranking system.

I created a new account, so friend me on there: ASDbelowMean #1846

I've come to realized that I hate playing assassins. I'm really not good at them and I just don't find them fun. I really like the supports (except for Uther. I've never played Lili) and I'm a lot better as Morales than I used to be. I also like some of the warriors. I have a master skin Artanis and a level nine Stitches. I'm waiting for some buffs for the former, however. He needs help.

I'm ok with the releases so far. Buying a brand new hero is a complete gamble. Morales, Lunara, Rexxar, Artanis, Cho'gall, and Greymane were completely undertuned on release (and some still are). Yeah, Xul and Li-Ming were overpowered and everyone who played should have seen the nerf hammer coming. But in Blizzard's defense, it's really hard to see if a hero is overpowered or people just don't know how to play against them. I remember when the Butcher was released and people were whining left and right that he was OP. Well...he definitely isn't.

I'm sitting at ~2500 MMR and I think that's where I should be. Some games we do well, some we don't. Although I've had a losing streak as medic that wasn't my fault (seriously Illidan, don't dive in 2v5. I can't do anything).

You seem like you're where you should be, SenorBeef Even before your hiatus your MMR (in HL) was ~1500. It has dipped down quite a bit since you've been back, though. But, to give validity to your statement, if you have a bad run during your placement matches you'll have to climb out of a very deep hole.

If you're better than the other nine people playing then you should should be winning more often, because you should be carrying them. You need to become the shot-caller (the biggest issue is knowing when to end the game). Looking at your Muradin build, it doesn't match the top ten builds.

But yeah, your example is rather egregious and I'd have probably thrown my computer out of the window. The reason you lost so bad is because your Li-Ming through the match. Plus, they had a much better comp than you. There's no way Tyrande would have been able to out heal Morales. It was possible, but the moment Li-Ming threw y'all were doomed. For your last game with Valla she picked some not-good talents that didn't mesh with your team well. Even then, your Diablo out-damaged you. For your last Falstad loss you took some weird talents. The first few levels you took ability talents then after ten you took one ability talent but then two AA (Giant Killer and your level 20). If you wanted Giant Killer and Nexus Frenzy you should have taken Season Marksman at level 1, Power Throw at 4, and Secret Weapon at 7. Same goes with Muradin. Eg, Stoneform pairs perfectly with Avatar.

So, in summation, your teams have sucked but you could do better.

I know the stats I claimed don't match up with the end stats of that one. That's why I was saying "at the 10 minute mark" rather than at the end, because during the last 3 minutes or so I made some desperate efforts after the game was over to save some teammates and died a few times, during which they mostly sat behind the walls and finally racked up some damage and came out ahead. But the game was thoroughly over by then.

There was something weird with the placement matches. When I came back, I had to play 12 of them, not 20. If I hadn't played in so long that I needed to be re-placed, I should've had to have played all 20. If not, I should've had 0. Having 12 is very strange.

I played those placement matches with a friend, who himself got placed after we played another 8 games (he needed 20, I only needed the first 12) and he ended up getting placed at level 20 to my 35. Even though all the placement matches I needed I had played with him.

You're right, if I'm better than all the other players, I should be advancing... if the bad players were evenly distributed. It's anecdotal at this point, but it doesn't seem that way. It seems like the worst player - the one who's bad enough to throw the whole game - ends up on my team more than half the time.

It's incredibly frustrating that you can't queue into HL anymore with more than one friend. My rating tanked pretty hard after that.

Wait, how are you able to see each others' games like that?

And before anyone bothers to look up my games, I'll just say outright: Almost all of my games are against bots, and most of them are at the lowest difficulty just to quest and level up heroes as quickly as possible.

If you're only playing against bots, then your games aren't in there.

Ah, gotcha. Do they somehow monitor all games, or is it just games where at least one of the players is a member of that site?

And speaking of bots, has anyone seen a bot playing Li Ming or Xul? I'm starting to wonder if they didn't bother to write an AI for either of them.

Oh, and one other random observation: I just noticed the other day that at least some of the female heroes ride sidesaddle. I'm not sure if it's all of them.

As long as one person uploads to the site the match will be there.

They definitely wrote an AI for them, or else there'd be nothing for them to do when players drop link during regular matches. No idea whether or not they're appearing during AI matches or not.

Absolutely enormous patch dropping - big changes to draft mode, kill data graphs, and major reworks of a bunch of heroes.

Hopefully the draft changes indicate that this interminable "preseason" is soon to end.

Oh hey, they made Sylvanas' second ult not useless. And by that I mean gave her an entirely new ult.

She does need to channel while using it, so I'm not TOO worried. It's going to set up some hilarious moments, though.

It's becoming a talent at level 7.

Oh, well that's OK then. Though, as I recall, level 7 already has several good talents to choose from, so there will be some opportunity cost there. Unless of course they're moving those around too.

Probably not something you're aware of since you mostly play AI, but Possession was widely considered one of the most worthless heroics in the game, if not the top contender.

It's great on AI matches, but trash otherwise.

Yeah, it's assumed that if Possession has been picked it must have been on accident.
