Not in any way intending to usurp IG's most excellent answer, may I add the related/extended euphemism "go to the bathroom"? This one has always chafed me (the euphemism, not the euphemistic activity denoted therewith. (That is only occasionally.)). It is particularly strained when applied to nonhuman animals, such as "When your dog 'goes to the bathroom' outside, give him praise". There oughtta be a law!

Carry on.

Space Battleship Yamato

- the drawing was excellent and the animation was subpar by American standards
- served as an introduction to anime for many Americans during the 1980's when released under the title "Starblazers"
- was the first animated 'space opera' on Japanese tv and was hugely influential
- the series featured lots of manly combat scenes but had the requisite number of overly sexualized feminine characters one expects from the genre
- the post-nuclear setting spoke to Japanese audiences in a way that was likely missed by many Americans. A misinterpreted cultural message is one of the true hallmarks of anime

We live in an age of information overload. This subreddit is tailor made to help people keep up.
Reddit is a convenient playform to access; many Reddit users are on the lazy side of things and could really figure much of this stuff out for themselves if they invested the time.
Reddit is often a casual, not so serious place. Many questions in OutOfTheLoop are of little cosmic importance; otoh the non-initiated could be surprised at how cerebral parts of it can be.

Could have gone with Yankees, but I think the Tigers logo is its equal and I am from Michigan. Seriously, though, when I lived in China, I saw Tiger clothing quite a bit even though they didn't follow the sport.

Running into a burning building to rescue someone

- Regularly makes news headlines
- placing one's own safety in peril to rescue someone else is a completely selfless act
- all too often ends in the untimely demise of the rescuer and we are sadly left to consider their courage only after they're gone.

I don't follow anime that closely, but I'll say Spirited Away

- most successful film in Japanese history
- English dialogue was written to match original's lip movements
- Pixar animators watched this film for inspiration
- Miyazaki was inspired to make a coming-of-age film as a departure from the typical romance-for-young-girls theme

The whole Satanic cult madness

-People actually believed there was a nation (world?) wide Satanic cult doing unspeakable things
-People went to prison based on this belief
-Supposedly day care workers were part of it, doing things to children in their care
-Was supposed to be one highly organized, mass movement
-The FBI investigated and found NO evidence that such a thing existed
-Some people still believe it does exist, and either the FBI is part of it, or they cover themselves up very well.

"The Clowns"

- this 1970 film was made by the famous Italian film director Federico Fellini
- I never saw it. After all, I'm an uncultured American.
- critics loved it
- From all accounts, the film featured lots of circus clown footage. And the circus was supposed to represent life. And Fellini is the ringmaster, and uh....
- Yeah, it's art, man!

Hard to say. Would YouTube and Spotify be considered social media because of share and notification features? How about games where you can get benefits from your friends? How about Uber and Lyft? They involve contacting people, which is "social" interaction.

"Here's looking at you, kid" from Casablanca

Occurs multiple times (three times, I think)
Is not a common expression, so people know you're quoting the film
Is part of the famous dialogue at the end ("the lives of three people don't amount to a hill of beans")

High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars

Quintessential dog breed:

Labrador Retriever
- According to the American Kennel Club, has held the title of Most Popular Dog Breed since 1991. Frequently holds similar records in other countries.
- Easily recognizable even by people who don't know anything much about dogs.
- Well known as a household pet, assistance dog, law enforcement dog, sporting dog and hunting dog. All these roles in society definitely make it "man's best friend."
- A very attractive breed with all the major qualities you could want in a dog - both strong and muscular but still perfectly adorable and cuddly. Also very even-tempered and not overly noisy.

Quintessential James Bond movie:

Goldfinger
- Contains all the essential tropes of a typical Bond film and in many instances was the first to introduce that trope:
  • Great theme song and opening credits
  • Villian with outrageous scheme
  • Memorable henchman
  • Bond girl with blatantly sexual name (indeed, none of the others could ever beat it)
  • Features Q and his gadgets
  • Iconic Bond car (often regarded as the most iconic one)
  • Features the line "Bond. James Bond." (though not the best delivery)
  • Ends with Bond choosing to get laid over being rescued
- Standouts of the film itself:
  • The pre-credits sequence in which Bond emerges from the water in a wetsuit to plant explosives then casually unzips the wetsuit to reveal a white dinner jacket, pops a rose in his lapel and strolls on into a bar oozing class. Pretty much sums up the two sides of the character.
  • The iconic death by gold paint
  • The iconic scene in which Bond is expected to die via laser
  • Bomb timer being stopped at "0:07"
