I have always been a curious type; I love to learn new facts and to have wrong beliefs debunked. On this site I am particularly interested in learning details about specific human behaviors and social issues.

I'm thinking of another board I follow, which has hundreds of sub-forums, and sub-sub-forums. If you are interested in vegetable gardening, you can zero in on the Vegetable Gardening sub-sub-forum, interact with other vegetable gardeners, and never hear the views of the flower gardeners. For that matter, you can completely ignore anything that does not concern vegetable gardening. As a result, you never get to know other forum members who don't care for vegetable gardening.

Now, consider the SDMB. With so few sub-forums (and no sub-sub-forums), you have to figure out where your question or comment belongs--alongside questions or comments that have nothing to do with your interests, but which you might find interesting anyway. You might open them and read them; and even though you may never post in them (or you might, if the topic strikes your fancy), you get to know the people behind the names: what they know well and what they don't, what they find humorous, what their lives are like. Who might be a good resource if you're planning a trip, or if you're looking for expertise outside your experience. And in turn, they get to know you too. You become a member of a community, not just a vegetable gardener discussing vegetable gardening with other vegetable gardeners.

That's what keeps me coming back--the community we've created. I've made a lot of friends here, and I think it's the few forums that we have that have contributed to me considering interests that were not my own prior to signing up, getting to know people whose views I may not agree with but respect anyway, considering points-of-view and solutions to challenges I never would have thought of, laughing at humorous posts, helping out others if I can; and otherwise, being part of the community.
This, more or less.

And I do want the conversation to be with people who think that "cite please" is a perfectly reasonable thing to say; and a perfectly reasonable thing to answer.

And I want that conversation to be with people who are at least mostly well-intentioned. (We do seem to have an occasional exception; but an occasional exception is probably unavoidable. And they do get pushback.)

And while sometimes I want to read interesting stuff and not have to think too much about it, sometimes I want to test my ideas and concepts against other people's. (unggh, I still want to get back to one old thread I just wasn't awake enough to deal with at the time -- ) Having to come up with an at least somewhat coherent argument against somebody who disagrees with me is good for me. And if I really can't do it, changing my mind is also sometimes good for me. I know some people I can do that with IRL on some subjects; but being able to carry on a disagreement in person without anybody getting ticked off is often tricky.

* And, um, I like to talk. As people here have undoubtedly noticed.

Well, originally I was going to wow, amaze and impress y'all with my charm, good looks, impeccable manners, high intelligence and subtle, devastating wit.

Now, some of you might argue whether I'm a "natural" or "professional" fool but it is my tendency to play the court jester and I can do that here and not get so many weird looks. I like to think it's because y'all understand and appreciate my humor, but maybe I don't get the looks cause I can't see them.

Nah, really it's just something to do until everyone goes to bed and I can put porn on the big tv in the living room.

Contrary to what many believe when they think superficially about it (at least in Europe), the USA and Europe are very different places. Their attitudes to State, Sex, God & Religion, guns, food, sport, morality & prudishness are very different indeed. And I come here to witness that in a setting that allows civilized debatte. I learn a lot.

Note to Beck; keep an eye on this one, with a name like that (sounds so swiss and naughty cyborgish) there has to be some really cool and far out abilities or skills we can add to the hive group (uh what was the name y'all decided on again?) If the promise shown in the name pans out, maybe we can send someone round for an interview/offer

Now I'm paranoid. I already got a weather thread started in my honor and so after I saw this, I checked when saucywench started the Avatars/User Names Explained.

Sometimes it's just a coincidence.

Indeed, you penny-a-post guys have it good. Heck, after a few months, youíll be able to afford a Hershey Bar! LOL.

But, those of us on the SDMB Dollar-a-Letter scale have loftier goals. McLaren P-1s donít pay for themselves, know what I mean?

And, if I need a bit more expense money any particular month (for example, letís say I fancy a premium call girl), I simply post more verbose.

NM Dorks sillyness. He's the 'Charlie ' to our group of super powered SD Angels.
~VOW- our hallowed team leader, cape wearer and no-hair.
NellieBly- the anchor, level headed, eye problems, so her other senses are super enhanced. No cape but a high-vis orange vest.
And, ta-da me! Beckdawrek who's ALWAYS bad,bad,bad!()
Dork will be in contact about your team duties and or pie making abilities. He's also an incorrigible flirt ()

I can do pie. Even do the homemade crust. Had a heck of a time when I moved here because there's no Crisco. So I had to learn how to make a pie crust again. Now with butter. Mmm butter.

Next weekend is pie weekend. This weekend's for cookies and scones.

Been reading SD from the 80s from free papers in Baltimore then the books, then online. It’s THE place to be clever, smart, and get mucho info, maybe even be cutesy or jerky. Plus games are fun.

English is my first language, but living in an area where almost everyone speaks it as a 2nd/3rd/4th language, means I can't use idioms or references that I could use in the U.S., such as, "I know nothing" from Hogan's Heroes. (Which doesn't actually work in writing, because the intonation is so important.)

I know people who are losing their first language because they use it so little. Fortunately my work is in English. Mostly.

abstinence and ignorance are not the same Ö but can influence each other (totally unawares) Ö reinforcing the idiom/euphemism "one step forward, two steps back".

To fight ignorance of course!
As it turned out it is almost always my ignorance which took me a while to realize, but that makes it even better.

Plus, the people. thousands of great people and a few total dipsticks (I believe that is what the Straightdope advertisement says).

Because the police told me I wasn't allowed to spray-paint my opinions on nearby buildings any more, of course!!

But really, because it's a fun and knowledgeable group of people.

Letís imagine itís not a myth and you come across tens of thousands of lemmings leaping off a cliff to their certain bloody, painful deaths.

But you have an opportunity to divert those lemmings onto a path of perpetual happiness and enlightenment.

Would you take that opportunity?

I would. And I do.

Thatís why I post to the Straight Dope Message Board.

I recently encountered a thread here that had turned into a discussion as to what is and is not considered to be canon in "Peanuts". I like the unexpected (and always interesting) turns that threads can take here...you don't find that in too many other places.

Also, I like the people.

I only post here because I can do it in my underwear and no one says anything.

No one.

Says anything.

Ever.

Fugazi, ummm.... a bunch of us were chatting, and... ummmm.... <ThelmaLou thrusts out her hand with a card in it>... well, here's a gift card to Target. You know, blue is a very nice color. And you can't go wrong with plain white, ya know? Merry Christmas, dude!

I post because no one on the board has (yet) said to me, as my wife once did: "Expeliarmus pontificat".

Inertia, mostly; this was my first forum. I stopped posting in Great Debates or Elections to avoid getting banned which sucked away most of my interest in this forum.

At first I was a bit intimidated, thinking I had hit on some sort of intellectual gathering spot. But once I figured out that the tagline is just a pithy slogan and not a mission statement, I felt comfortable posting. It's really little different than any other forum or group or bbs that I've belonged to.

Seriously? This is interesting. I've been on plenty of boards and this one is quite different from any of them-- in the level of discourse, the smarts of the posters, the rigorous moderation, the breadth of topics covered, the intelligent humor. I'd like to know about boards that are like this one. I haven't found any. Do share.

First of all, thank you for this O.P. This may be one of the best posts I've seen on the SDMB and I'm a '99er.

A half-dozen wisenheimer answers leap to mind. A few lascivious ones as well.

But if I were to be very honest with myself, it would be this:

I discovered The Straight Dope at the much-beloved and missed Coliseum Books on West 57th Street in NYC. I randomly picked it up in the Humor section.

And stood and read. And laughed REALLY hard in the aisle. Then I bought it and brought it home. And laughed and laughed and laughed.

That level of clever endorphine-drip got to me. Found all of the books. Loved all of them. When I stumbled upon the AOL Board in 1999, I was in.

I post for the reasons a lot of us do. To share smidgens of real-world knowledge in the pursuit of, of course, Fighting Ignorance. To vent. To laugh. To support someone else's opinions and yeah, to battle someone I vehemently disagree with.

This is the Imperfect Mirror that so many of us still cherish. It reflects everything we put into it. Good, bad, tawdry, noble.

A good place to spend time and filled with some pretty fine humans.

I guess I should have been more clear. The moderation is generally more stringent here than any place I've seen, but the discussions, personalities, breadth of topics discussed are all things I've found in other places. It by no means is a slight on the SDMB; I enjoy this board and look forward to hearing the thoughts of many of the posters. It just doesn't stand out in general as an exemplar of any of the other meeting spots I mentioned.
