What about the trolls who actually carried out the harrassment? Are any of them facing charges?

Rep. Steve King, defending anti-abortion legislation without an exception for rape or incest:
Quote:
"What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?" he said in Urbandale, Iowa. "Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can't say that I was not a part of a product of that."

I feel fairly confident that Steve King was[sic] a part of a product of several generations of incest.

Well, historically speaking, King is probably right. You have two parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents, 16 great-great grandparents--go back just 15 generations and you have over 72,000 relations, and somewhere along the line the odds are favorable, given wars and human conduct thereof, that a child born of rapine or incest becomes likely.

That said, that he believes we're not slightly more mature as a people yet says oodles about him and how he would conduct himself if the world would just let him (let's say Droit du seigneur probably holds great interest to him).

Re: Steve King

King was attempting to make the point that if you are against abortions, it doesn't make sense to allow yourself the exception of being for an abortion that is wanted because of a rape. IOW, if you think abortion is murder, what does it matter how the child (fetus) was conceived? Why is murder no longer murder in that case? He wasn't suggesting that rape is acceptable.

He was normalizing it, and that's close enough.

Also, there was this: "It's not the baby's fault for the sin of the father, or of the mother," he said.

Y’know, if he wanted to say “pregnancy’s precious regardless how it started”, he could, like, say that. Others do.

Liz Cheney decides to show she's had enough by tweeting:

"Today’s comments by @RepSteveKingIA are appalling and bizarre. As I’ve said before, it’s time for him to go. The people of Iowa’s 4th congressional district deserve better."

Of course, that's the wrong Twitter account, but at least she tried.

After Kentucky required schools to display the national motto "In God We Trust", Fayette County schools found a creative form of malicious compliance:

Quote:
Rather than a large display, the school district made copies of the back of a one-dollar bill and placed them in frames that were distributed to all the schools. In accordance with the state law, the frames containing the money are in prominent locations, The Lexington Herald-Leader reports....
Kentucky Republicans haz a sad:

Quote:
However, the bill's sponsor, State Rep. Brandon Reed (R-Hodgenville) blasted the school district in a statement, accusing its administrators of playing "political games."...
Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin also questioned the move made by FCPS, saying, "Here's the thing, if that's meant to be cute or clever. What are we hoping to accomplish by trying to circumvent the intention of a law?"...
Given that the law specifies the school cafeteria as a qualifying "prominent location", I would have gone with the classic "IN GOD WE TRUST, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH", but the dollar bill picture works too.

I just hope that when they copied the bill, they increased its size by at least 50%.

I hope we can count on Senator Cornyn to take up the "bring a snowball into the Senate in February to disprove climate change" mantle, should Senator Inhofe find himself unable to serve.

Yeah. Was somebody able to help Senator Cornyn understand that all the previous Julys (and Junes and Augusts) were summer too?

Republicans in general really seem to have a problem understanding the distinction between season and climate.

Almost-packed house at Steve King's town hall

Quote:
Embattled Rep. Steve King (R-IA) suffered further humiliation on Saturday when only two people showed up for his town hall meeting with Iowa constituents.
From a twitter comment: This happens when supporters are not allowed to wear their hoods to the gathering.

And another: Just a hunch, but I’m guessing @SteveKingIA will not be comparing his crowd with Elton John’s.

I liked these:

Quote:
I did Nazi that coming.

Quote:
His supporters would have been there but they all flew out to Portland, Oregon for the big Proud Boy protest going there today.

Quote:
No one could make it to Steve King's townhall – they are either raping their sister, in bankruptcy court, or too sick & without insurance

Quote:
is his constituency... chairs?

and the very best one:

Quote:
"Which of you two young ladies has conceived child by rape or incest?"

You laugh but D’nesh D’Souza recently posted a picture of snow in August and triumphed “where’s your global warming when there’s snow in Summer!!”.

The picture was from Australia.

The English sent perfectly good calendars down there when they were colonizing Australia, so it's not his fault the Australians don't know when summer and winter are supposed to be.

That's Republican 101. Same thing with Trump. His followers say that he's only kidding when someone calls out the bullshit, but the original hope was to plant another seed of stupidity in the "minds" of the (many) dumber supporters.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but it's too fun to pass up.

The New York Times has put together something called the 1619 Project, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first black slaves in the British American colonies, and to recognize the central importance of the institution of slavery in the history of the United States. It's an excellent piece of work.

Former GOP House Leader (and, astoundingly, former history professor) Newt Gringrich tweeted today, giving a rather predictable take on the 1619 Project:
Quote:
The NY Times 1619 Project should make its slogan “All the Propaganda we want to brainwash you with”.it is a repudiation of the original NY Times motto.
That's par for the course, coming from Gingrich.

What I really liked was the response by leftist sports historian and journalist David Zirin:
Quote:
It's history, not a wife in a hospital bed. You can't just walk away.
Mike drop right there.

Kinda bizarre the reaction one gets when you point out that Mount Vernon and Monticello were forced labor camps ala Stalin's Russia. It was just done by private citizens and not as an act of governance.

Bolsonaro. Technically not a Republican, as such, but, close enough. “We have to cut on our rainforest 4 times as fast, butt if you want to save the world, everyone needs to make defecation an every-other-day kind of thing.

I mean, how much more GOP can he get? Does he have to say it in Inglés?
