I reckon I'll buy it on Epic, then when it comes on Steam I'll transfer my code.

Yeah, but only because Randy Pitchford walked back from the deal some when he saw the shitstorm brewing. Which, good on him I suppose.

That doesn't change the fact that platform- and console-exclusives are absolutely a shit marketing ploy that fucks consumers. Nakedly so. Deliberately so. The whole point is to coerce you into buying a gaming system or subscribe to a platform you hadn't (for whatever reason of yours) ; not by improving said systems or platforms or do a thing about those reasons, which are still valid, but by making the option you didn't pick artificially attractive via manufactured scarcity.

I'm sure it all maths out to "marginally better profits" for the people engaging in these tactics even when factoring negative press, consumer backlash or people plain not falling into the trap - else they wouldn't do it. But then so does marketing tobacco to teenagers, you know ?

I am of two Minds about it. On the One hand I think it is a major load of bullshit and I want to boycott the 6 months on principle. On the other hand I think is a major loaf of bullshit, but I will probably bend over and take it up the tailpipe to start playing it by October.

Epic haven't developed or published the game at all, they've simply bought the rights to sell it exclusively for a period.

I don't really like it. There's now a few of these exclusivity deals on Epic. Metro: Exodus was heavily advertised on Steam before being pulled from sale on that platform due to the exclusivity deal.

This is a bit of a hijack though, maybe I'll start another thread on it.

I don't have any issue with timed exclusivity. While it's finally beginning to wane due to a large (oh so large) number of issues Valve has had in the past few years, Steam still has a near-monopoly as a PC games distribution platform. Gog is the only real competitor and they run a tight curation ship and have a much thinner selection of games, for better or worse. Origin only really exists as a storefront exclusively for EA games, as far as most people are concerned, and Uplay... who uses Uplay? All the other sites are key resellers that generally distribute Steam keys (still tying you to that platform). Humble also provides the option to get Steam keys for almost all games it distributes. Increasing competition keeps Valve from doing whatever they want with Steam which would almost certainly not be consumer friendly at all.

What I do take issue with is the fact that the Epic Store is literal spyware that datamines a bunch of usage data from your Steam installation it shouldn't even be able to have access to, and doesn't even deign to tell you about it.

Oh, I forgot about the Discord game store which... it's not as lol as Uplay but it barely counts. It's pulled the same timed exclusivity deals as the Epic store but without being, y'know, literal spyware and more focused towards indies. Itch.io is also exclusively an indie distribution, and most non-free Hobby projects that are distributed on Itch are co-distributed on Steam anyway.

Either way, Steam is still basically the PC storefront, the main exceptions tend to either co-list their games on Steam, distribute Steam keys, or only exist for one small corner of the market (EA games, Activision-Blizzard games, whatever).

But so what? What Steam doesn't have is a monopoly on the sales level due, in large part, to its willingness to give publishers free retail keys and thus compete against itself.

Ars Technica ran a piece today about how Valve doesn't really get 30% of game sales because they generate so many retail keys for publishers. That's far more meaningful to me as a consumer than the actual hosting service. Besides which, Epic's store is hot garbage and their store/client lacks basic features that Steam had a decade ago.

Already covered in a previous post, and it's neither here nor there.

None of this is registering as other than "Wah, I can't get the game I want on from that platform I want."

There's not a single reasonable complaint about this setup. Every. Single. Product. Is marketed by somebody. Entities who have nothing to do with the creation of products or services regularly buy the rights to that product or service. Many products are available exclusively at one source.

Why video gamers think that they need to be pandered to and have any one particular game released in the manner of their choosing is beyond me.

Triple down on entitlement.

Apparently the Epic Store started having sales they didn't tell the developers about, so B3 is not available for pre-order anymore, at least for a while.

Same goes for Bloodlines 2 and quite a few other big ticket Epic items. Not sure why they're pulling out exactly - apparently Epic is doing the sale out of their own cut rather than what the publishers receive. I mean it's pretty tacky to have sales on fucking pre-orders, but then it's also pretty tacky to sell out exclusivity so I'm not sure what the rationale is.

It's because Epic gave no ability to opt out and it's eroding the value perception of their game. Think of why almost every mobile game has to have a freemium model because of the incredible mental resistance to spending even a couple bucks on a new mobile game.

Right. If players see that a game was once sold for $30, even for a short time, they'll never pay $60 for it.

And there's been a push over the last few years to increase the price of new games - AAA games used to launch at £40 and are now launching at £50. Giving people £10 off undermines that pricing strategy. Whether you agree with that pricing or not (I don't pay £40 for games, never mind £50) it should be up to the dev/pub and not a third party without consultation, especially on pre orders!

Considering that I'm the subject of a (weeeeeaaksaaauuce) pit thread due to my posts in this thread and the other related one, I will say that at this point I'll agree that Epic is doing a fantastic job of stepping on their dick.

Ain't MAD at them, but yeah.

Personally I tend to gravitate toward “pay for a game once then never again” type apps. In my experience they’re better quality and less annoying. Freemium games usually slip in hidden paywalls and base gameplay around trying to hook you then milk you by making you frustrated, then dangling relief in front of your nose while making a “gimme” sign with their other hand.

Games you pay for up-front don’t need to do that. They have your cash already so let you have fun.

So....
I suck at Borderlands 2 now it seems.

I started the new DLC that is a bridge to the B3 story. I pulled the DLC, and loaded up the game for the first time in years. I looked at my characters, looked at my equipment, looked at my inventory and skills trees and remembered maybe 10% of what the hell any of it was. Jumping into the DLC in Ultimate mode went about as well as you would expect, utter suckitude.

Playing TVHM with an UVHM character is much worse. Everything is a only hit kill, if you even bother to shoot back instead of just strolling through imperviously.

Hmm, it looks like the Epic Exclusivity period is almost up. Strangely I am just not that excited anymore. For what is a follow up to one of my favorite games ever, that I waited for for 10 years. I am just completely meh now. After the launch, it seems like the hype died almost immediately, and was forgotten very quickly. I have some major issues with the Developer's business practices, but more that that I am just not at all excited about the game. Seems so weird with hindsight ,but I'll probably wait for a major sale at this point.

I wonder if there will be a Steam front page advert push once it is available, to try and get the hype back.

Epic has turned into the place I check once a week for their free game, but I wouldn't buy anything from them - their store remains appalling.

I've seen significant sales for Borderlands 3 recently (currently 55% off at Fanatical), yet - like wolfman, I just can't get excited about it. I really loved the first two Borderlands (plus expansions), and had many hours of hilariously-fun co-op play, so I was excited about 3's release...except it was on the Epic platform only.

I don't fault them for wanting to keep as much of their sales $$ as possible and not paying commissions to platforms like Steam. But that decision, and the "pretty good but not great" reviews (see below), has cooled much of the passion I had for the game. And I certainly won't be paying more than 70% of list price.

I've been playing it for a few weeks and loving it. I played 2 and the Pre-Sequel, and enjoyed them both. The game play is mostly the same, and where it's different, it's better. Picking up loot is easier than it was (it's does a better job picking up ammo that's behind another ammo type that you're full up on, if you know what I'm saying), and the weapons are fantastic. I find the battles to be more fun, with the shooting somehow seeming more impactful (even though I'm using a mouse and keyboard, so I'm not getting tactile feedback) -- with a big gun, you really feel like you're blowing them away. The whole game is just better, and the writing seems to be just as good.

There is one annoying bug that was introduced with one of the updates, and I hope they clear that up soon. There's a simple enough work-around, but still, if they know when they screwed it up, they should know how to fix it.

Anyway, I give it two thumbs up.

I think the writing is complete trash compared to BL2. Jack is just soooo much more compelling than the twins.

The action is good though, sure. I'm pretty much done with the game though unless some significant endgame content comes out. Raising the level cap by 3 is just enough to make my gear suck, but doesn't make any of the farming any more interesting and made the last couple month seem worthless.

Handsome Jack was so great, one of the best villains I’ve ever encountered in a game. Because he’s so likeable and hateable at the same time. He cracked me up with a lot of his dialogue while saying and doing totally detestable things. Kind of like a less corny, more sane version of Batman’s Joker.

The twins are... Meh. I just don’t care about them. They’re evil and I need to defeat them, I get that. They do bad stuff, they deserve to be shot in the head. Aside from that I don’t see much that’s compelling about them. They have zero charisma, I don’t remember any clever dialogue, they aren’t menacing at all, etc. I get that they are a satirical take on the evils of social media but they’re just not done well.

The overall story and characters are good, I think. They hold up well. I’ve mainly been playing as Zane and his dialogue is great, I even find myself quoting him now and then.

Yeah the game is fun to play. As a loot shooter it’s top notch and there is a lot of variety with builds, characters, and gear. My build with Zane is my favorite experience with the series so far (and I’ve played all 3 previous entries).

It's launching on Steam March 13 at a 50% sale, which is unusual...and intriguing. I will probably pull the trigger.

HA!
Yeah, I play on PC, but this is one of the few games I play with a controller. At my age, my aiming ability is awful no matter what I use, so I might as well be comfortable.

Well I ended up picking it up after all before it left sale on Steam, but more out of stay-at-home boredom than any increase in interest. Out of all the games that were supposed to be releasing this Spring, everything on PC got delayed except DOOM Eternal, which is a bit frantic for my current mood. It's not bad, haven't been seriously grabbed at 4 hours or so, but having fun with the Mech chick Moze.

I'm wondering if DOOM is gonna sell crazy numbers, simply because it is the only new game dropped as people start to get cabin fever.Well other than Animal Crossing, but different systems, not to mention vastly different markets.

Also, speaking of controllers, I have been playing it with one as well, and it gives a hell of a lot of fudge room for aiming. At least a hell of a lot compared to when I last played BL2 in Ultimate VH mode. It's almost comical how often I get a crit head shot with a hip-fired revolver at 75-100 yards.

I imagine Bethesda accidentally including the non-drm exe for Doom Eternal in the launcher helped opening day numbers.

I really looked forward to this game, but I kind of petered out at level 11.

It doesn't seem like there are a lot of side quests and I took every one I ran across. Still, I ended up on a level 12 quest at level 11 and it kept kicking my ass. I looked around for side quests but couldn't find any, then got tired of driving around trying to find things to kill to level up.

Done with it for now, I imagine I'll go back sometime. Probably start over with a different character. I used the mech girl and wasn't having a lot of fun with it.

Picked this up on Steam a week ago. Fortunately, I've not had that problem, Sicks Ate. Plenty of quests to keep me going. Lots of things not explained, though. Had to search to find out how to check the email. If that ever popped up on-screen, it was only for a hot second. I have no idea which key boosts vehicle speed, and I can't find it in the options or online. The one I saw gave the wrong key...the default key for horn. I find the drop rates pretty improved from the previous games. At least now I'm getting weapons that can actually help.

Have you tried shift codes? They publish some codes(you can google) that give you golden keys for the big chest on Sanctuary. I don't want to waste them at low levels, but I did use one to see the loot type, and got a gold pistol, that is helping me kick ass.

My experience as well. And after reading some advice online not to try quests under-leveled, I too looked for ways to level up.

I eventually gave up finding side quests and went on down to the planet. I played through several stages (including meeting Lorelei, and fighting a couple of boss-types), and it wasn't too bad. I have a couple of decent weapons, though (purely drops, not Shift rewards).

There is for sure(I tried it first this time ) An active 5 key shift code, for all platforms.

The legendaries are much more common in general though. In BL2 I think I was level 25 before I got my first non-story gold item (Lilith gave a gold Shield in an early chapter IIRC) on my 1st char playthrough.

In BL3 at level 18 I have found 5 in normal gameplay, from boss drops and Typhoon Deleon stashes mostly.
