That inventor, David Warren, was a young boy of about 9 or 10 when his father died in an airplane crash in 1934 over the Bass Strait of southeast Australia (between Tasmania and Victoria). After a 1953 airliner crash of a de Havilland Comet, the first commercial jetliner, Warren remembered thinking that "If a businessman had been using one of these (miniature voice recorders) in the plane and we could find it in the wreckage and we played it back, we'd say, 'We know what caused this.' Any sounds that were relevant to what was going on would be recorded and you could take them from the wreckage."

One of the 9/11 conspiracy theorist's favorite claims is that "no black boxes were recovered from the four planes." This is an outright lie, as both recorders were recovered from the planes that hit the Pentagon and the one that went down in Pennsylvania.

The flight recorders from the two planes that hit the WTC towers could not be found, due to significant impact and fire exposure at the site.

The Pentagon's 9/11 Memorial Site is temporarily closed until May 2020. Signs last week informed us.

Which is a bummer because I really wanted to see it.

Barbara Olson was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77 on her way to a taping of Politically Incorrect in Los Angeles, when it was flown into the Pentagon in the September 11 attacks. Her original plan had been to fly to California on September 10, but she waited until the next day so that she could wake up with her husband on his birthday, September 11.

American Airlines Flight 77 was a Boeing 757 originating from Dulles and flying to LAX. All 66 on board died. The Pentagon Memorial commemorates 184 people who died on board and at the Pentagon. The memorial is 3" high at its shortest point, and 71" high at its tallest point, representing the ages of the victims.

Dulles International Airport, serving Washington, D.C, was named for U.S. Secretary of State and diplomat John Foster Dulles. The main terminal was designed in 1958 by famed Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, and is supposedly "highly regarded for its graceful beauty, suggestive of flight" (but I've flown in and out of Dulles several times and never noticed it)
On May 24, 1976 supersonic flights between the U.S. and Europe began with the arrival of a British Airways Concorde from London and an Air France Concorde from Paris.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was no fan of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who served during President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Administration. Once, after speaking with the Secretary, Churchill muttered to an aide, "Dull, duller, Dulles."

John Foster Dulles strongly opposed communism, believing it was "Godless terrorism". He was a strong supporter of President Eisenhower's decision to direct the CIA, then headed by his brother Allen Dulles, to draft plans to overthrow the Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh of Iran. This led directly to the coup d'état that placed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as the Shah of Iran.

Avery Foster Dulles was also a great-grandson of Secretary of State John Watson Foster and great-nephew of Secretary of State Robert Lansing.

While Avery Dulles was a brilliant scholar (with a doctorate from the Gregorian University and 33 honorary doctorates) and had a colorful life (for his liaison work with the French Navy, he was awarded the French Croix de guerre), his speaking style was uninspiring. (I heard him speak twice and was disappointed. Churchill's response to the father in Elendil's Heir's post #257 would also have applied to the son)

The Gregorian Calebdar was adopted in 1582, largely erasing a drift in astronomical dates of about a day every 150 years. First adopted by Roman Catholic countries, it did not become official in Greece until 1923, within the lifetime of a few living Greeks, including 113-year-old Ekaterini Kornarou from the town of Krestena in Peloponnese .

The Greek Uprising was a successful war of independence waged by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1830. Assisted by Russia, Great Britain, and France, Greece was finally recognized as an independent, sovereign state under the London Protocol of February, 1830. in 1832, the Treaty of Constantinople defined the final borders of the new state and established Prince Otto of Bavaria as the first king of Greece.

A Migratory Bird Treaty has been in place since 1918, to protect over 800 species of birds. Originally between the US and Canada, it now includes Mexico, Russia and Japan, and compels each country to conform internally with protective laws of alll members..

The song "Birmingham Sunday" is directly inspired by the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, an act of white supremacist terrorism which occurred at the African-American 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday, September 15, 1963. Four members of a local Ku Klux Klan chapter planted at least 15 sticks of dynamite attached to a timing device beneath the steps located on the east side of the church. The song was ritten in 1964 by Richard Fariña and recorded by Fariña's sister-in-law, Joan Baez.

The first running of the Indianapolis 500 was held on Tuesday, May 30, 1911. Ray Harroun, an engineer with the Marmon Motor Car Company, came out of retirement to drive, and won the inaugural event before re-retiring for good in the winner's circle.

Wolf Trap (formally, "Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts") is a performing arts center in Fairfax County, Virginia, near Washington, DC.

The land that Wolf Trap stands on was originally farmland; it was purchased by philanthropist Catherine Filene Shouse in stages, from 1930 to 1956; Shouse and her husband, Jouett Shouse, used the land as a weekend retreat from their home in Georgetown.

In 1966, Mrs. Shouse donated the land of Wolf Trap Farm to the U.S. Government, to be preserved for recreational use. She also donated $2 million for the construction of the Filene Center, the primary performance venue of the park.

In January 1995, U.S. and Canadian wildlife officials captured 14 wolves from multiple packs east of Jasper National Park, near Hinton AB CAN and re-introduced them to Yellowstone National Park. This table shows how wolves have thrived in Yellowstone, even with "intraspecific strife" -- wolves will sometimes kill their own.

Alberta, Canada, is the largest rat-free populated area in the world. Rat invasions of Alberta were stopped and rats were eliminated by very aggressive government rat control measures, starting during the 1950s.

The province of Alberta in Canada is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and wife of John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada (1878–83). Although the name "Louise" was originally planned, the princess wished to honor her dead father, so the last of her given names was chosen. Lake Louise in Alberta is also named after her, as is Mount Alberta.

Victoria is the only city name that occurs in US, Canada and Mexico. The capital of British Columbia is the only one named for the queen. Ciudad Victoria is the capital of Tamaulips, named after Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico. So was Victoria Texas, a city of 70,000, which was in Mexico at the time of its first settlement.

Philip Morris, the founder of the tobacco company, had a boutique on Bond Street in London. In 1902 one of the greatest admirers of the company, King Albert of Belgium, presented the boutique with the title of the Royal Tobacconist. Morris tnen started marketing cigarettes under the name Old Bond Street.

The history of Gold Bond dates to 1882, when it was first developed by physicians of the Rhode Island State Medical Association. The formula was purchased by Arthur W. Guilford in 1908, who established the Gold Bond name and began making the product in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The formula and rights were sold in 1912 to John M. Chapman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, who achieved greater brand recognition and distribution. Timothy F. Shea, who in 1930 joined what was then "The Gold Bond Sterilizing Powder Company", eventually rose to general manager and treasurer, and later took over as sole owner. His son, Robert J. Shea, took over as president of the company in 1965.

Abraham Lincoln's only surviving son, Robert Todd Lincoln, attended the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1922. It was R.T. Lincoln's last major public appearance; he died in 1926 at the age of 82.

Despite the line in the Brothers Four 1960 song "Blue Water Line" (then when old Abe Lincoln road with Todd upon his knee), this railroad at that time was a pure fabrication for the song. An actual Blue Water Line was established in Michigan in 1973.

Robert Todd Lincoln was coincidentally at or near the assassination of two other presidents. Per Wiki:

Quote:
At President James A. Garfield's invitation, Lincoln was at the Sixth Street Train Station in Washington, D.C., when the president was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, and was an eyewitness to the event. Lincoln was serving as Garfield's Secretary of War at the time.

At President William McKinley's invitation, Lincoln was at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, where the president was shot by Leon Czolgosz on September 6, 1901, though he was not an eyewitness to the event; he was just outside the building where the shooting occurred.

Entertainment impresario and producer Mike Todd was best known for producing the film Around the World in 80 Days.

Todd was the third husband of actress Elizabeth Taylor, and the only one of Taylor's husbands whom she did not divorce -- he died in a plane crash in 1958, while he and Taylor were still married.

Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith was an American gentleman farmer known as a great-grandson of Abraham Lincoln. In 1975, he became the last undisputed descendant of Lincoln when his sister, Mary Lincoln Beckwith, died without children. Though Timothy Lincoln Beckwith was born to second wife Annemarie Hoffman Beckwith in the midst of divorce proceedings in 1968, Robert Beckwith contended—and the court agreed—that his paternity was highly unlikely, as he had undergone a vasectomy in the early 1960s. Beckwith died on December 24, 1985.

The first recorded vasectomy was performed on a dog in 1823. Currently, this procedure is seldom performed on dogs, as castration remains the preferred reproductive control option for canines. Vasectomies, however, are regularly performed on bulls.

Alessandro Moreschi (1858 – 1922) was an Italian castrato singer of the late 19th century and the only castrato to make solo recordings. He is sometimes called "the last castrato". There were rumors that the Vatican had illegally castrated a singer in the 20th century, but this referred to a pupil of Moreschi's, Domenico Mancini, who sang falsetto. There were also unsubstantiated claims that Michael Jackson was chemically castrated to maintain his high-pitched voice.

Yes, black American artists were played on South African radio during the Apartheid days. The first I heard was Diana Ross in 1976 on Radio Springbok, which answered the question in my mind.

Capitol Site No. 1 is an operating, functioning oil well on state capitol grounds. It is the only capitol in the world with an oil well under it. It is located along Lincoln Boulevard in Oklahoma City..

Oklahoma's first capital was Guthrie, Oklahoma, but it moved to Oklahoma City in 1910, the same year that Halley’s Comet visited the Earth.

Guthrie, Oklahoma is about 25 miles north of Oklahoma City (which is on the old Route 66). On November 16, 1910, when Oklahoma was added to the Union as e 46th state, it was chosen as the state capital. In a 1910 special election, OK voters chose the larger Oklahoma City as the new capital.

Guthrie is nationally significant for its collection of late 19th and early 20th century commercial architecture. The Guthrie Historic District includes more than 2,000 buildings and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Oklahoma became the 46th state when it was admitted to the Union in 1907. This was 11 years after Utah became a state in 1896, and five years before New Mexico and Arizona were both admitted in 1912. Today, in fact, marks the 108th anniversary of Arizona gaining statehood on February 14th, 1912.

When Oklahoma joined the Union as the 46th state, the stars on the US flag were arranged thusly: 4 lateral rows of 8 stars, and 2 lateral rows of 7 stars — 6 rows of stars. The 2 rows of 7 stars were rows 2 and 5 of the 6.
