AOC Confronts Gilead CEO for $2,000 Price Tag for HIV Drug Truvada

I have limited knowledge of economic theory and don't know whether price levels in a single industry like pharma would be considered macroeconomics or microeconomics (I suspect micro), but I'd bet she knows more about economics than Jared Kushner.

Yes, Trump is an incompetent buffoon, but he does possess the ability to get more competent people to do his bidding:

"Bill, I'm going to give you this gun someone gave me--tremendous gun, by the way--it's true, and I want you to go into 7-11 there and bring me out all that beautiful, beautiful money in the cash register".

Because he holds out the promise of money. Without that, he has nothing. As POTUS he tries to add a promise of power as well, but the truth is we can deny him that ability. And if we see from his tax returns that he really has no money, well...

[Underline mine]

In a thread about Kushner, Carson, and Barr (lately) I'm gonna have to ask for a cite on that statement.

Well, relative to Trump himself--the business artist of the deal who lost a billion dollars in a decade.

Kushner may be slightly less incompetent and doesn't seem to have Trump's massive ego (although, who does?), and he's no business genius either, with the 666 5th Avenue purchase (which raises his conflicts of interest with trying to get bailed out by foreign money).

Barr so far is doing what Trump wants--they got their initial spin on the Mueller report out, but we'll see what happens in the end. He's stymied congressional oversight so far and is conducting his dog-and-pony investigation into the investigators.

But as I mentioned, as a younger man Carson was a very competent neurosurgeon. Here's a cite about what made his name:

Patrick and Benjamin Binder

Quote:
Patrick and Benjamin Binder (born February 2, 1987) were conjoined twins, joined at the head, born in Germany in early 1987, and separated at Johns Hopkins Hospital on September 7, 1987.[1] They were the first twins to be successfully separated by neurosurgeon Ben Carson, of Baltimore, Maryland. For this operation Carson was able to prepare by studying a three-dimensional physical model of the twins' anatomy. Carson described this separation as the first of its kind, with 23 similar attempted separations ending in the death of one or both twins.
Unfortunately, this story did not have a happy ending.
Quote:
Although Carson was able to separate the boys, they were both left profoundly disabled. The Associated Press reported, in 1989, two years after the separation, that Patrick remained in a "vegetative state", following the surgery.[2] He never came out of his coma. According to a 2015 Washington Post article, he "died sometime in the last decade".[3]

Benjamin recovered to a certain extent.[2] The Washington Post reported that Peter Parlagi, the twins' uncle, said their father was emotionally unable to ever handle them, or share in their care.[3] He said the twin's father became an alcoholic, spent all the couple's funds, and left their mother destitute and alone. She was forced to institutionalize them.[3]

In a 1993 interview, their mother, Theresia Binder, described guilt for agreeing to the operation that ruined the boys' prospect of ever having any quality of life.[3] According to the Washington Post's 2015 interview with Parlagi, Benjamin never learned to speak or feed himself, but he does enjoy visitors, and being taken for walks.[3]
And it's sad to see what Carson is today compared to what he was doing 30 years ago. Now he spouts scientific ignorance instead of doing ground-breaking medicine. He's not competent in what he's been tasked to do today. Does he have any real qualifications to be HUD secretary? He once lived in a house? Carson actually said he was unqualified to be HHS secretary and that would have been at least related to his background.

In the sound clips I heard Friday, where he touted his new immigration policy, Trump sounded as though he were reading from a teleprompter, and about half asleep.

A house? I'm pretty sure he lives in a pyramid.

As for the science, notice that he's not criticizing all scientists, just the "highfalutin" ones, who probably deserve it. Nobody likes highfalutin scientists.

Take it as you will. Having a MD does not make you a scientist. That's what a PhD is for.

That was supposed to be a joke. Carson is such a complete blithering moron that it's a wonder he can walk upright. I can't imagine how anyone who went to school at all, at any level, could have such an appalling lack of understanding of even the most elementary scientific concepts. It's like his ignorance is some kind of performance art.

Justin Amash (R-MI) is now calling for Loser Donald to be impeached.

I knew I liked him when I saw him in the Cohen hearings and he actually asked questions relevant to the investigation instead of rambling about book deals and movies like the other Republicans.

So the Mueller report is totally biased and fake news but it totally exonerates Trump and everyone in his campaign?

You'd think somebody who lies so much would be better at it.

Both. They're micro from the point of view of the company's accounting; macro from that of how they affect the country's economy. What makes something micro or macro isn't the concept itself: it's the point of view.

Note that the effect on the country's economy isn't only monetary: if, say, ibuprofen prices multiplied by 1000 tomorrow, the consequences in terms of missed hours of paid and unpaid work would be huge.

Well, looks like we have Judge Ahmit Mehta says he "has told the accounting firm Mazars it will need to turn over Donald Trump's accounting records from before he was President to the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee."

Just saw the AP News story about Judge Mehta's ruling.
Quote:
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, said Trump cannot block a House subpoena of financial records. He said the Democratic-led House committee seeking the information has said it believes the documents would help lawmakers consider strengthening ethics and disclosure laws, among other things.

The committee’s reasons were “valid legislative purposes,” Mehta said, and it was not for him “to question whether the Committee’s actions are truly motivated by political considerations.”

First: I hate the fact that these days every reference to a judge's ruling has to include which President appointed him.

But that said: HEE HEE HEE....this ought to be good. Tweet-storm coming!

It will be appealed immediately to the DC Appeals Court - whose Chief Judge is Merrick Garland.

On a more serious note, I think the consequence of this ruling will be more pressure from Trump's personally trained rottweiler, I mean, Attorney General. I smell something fishy about Barr's connections with Russia and something tells me he's just as deep in the Russian quicksand as Trump and Kushner. I think Trump is going to start using the DoJ to start going after his enemies. It'll be interesting to see whether people in the FBI and federal prosecutors' offices carry out his orders or refuse and get fired/resign. It's coming to that.

Will also be interested to see if Don McGahn complies with the House requests for testimony, and what the DoJ does if he does.

The Trump Administration: A Clusterfuck in the Making

Kris Kobach made some completely reasonable and not at all completely insane demands to grace the job of immigration czar with his presence:

1. Office in the West Wing.
2. Walk-in privileges with the president.
3. Assistant to the President rank - at highest pay level for WH senior staff.
4. Staff of 7 people (2 attorneys, 2 research analysts, 1 scheduler, 1 media person, 1 assistant).
5. POTUS sits down individually with Czar and the secretaries of Homeland Security, Defense, Justice, Ag, Interior, and Commerce, and tells each of the Secretaries to follow the directives of the Czar without delay, subject to appeal to the President in cases of disagreement.
6. 24/7 access to either a DHS or DOD jet. Czar must be on the border every week.
7. Ability to spend weekends in KS with family on way from border back to DC, unless POTUS needs Czar elsewhere.
8. Security detail if deemed necessary after security review.
9. Serve as the face of Trump immigration policy - the principal spokesman on television and in the media.
10. Promise that by November 1, 2019, the president will nominate Kris Kobach to be DHS Secretary, unless Kobach wishes to continue in Czar position.

It'll be interesting to see whether people in the FBI and federal prosecutors' offices carry out his orders or refuse and get fired/resign. It's coming to that.

Will also be interested to see if Don McGahn complies with the House requests for testimony, and what the DoJ does if he does.
Many have called on House Democrats to order U.S. Marshals to bring McGahn in, should McGahn refuse to comply with the subpoena requesting his testimony.

But of course Barr is in charge of the U.S. Marshal Service.

Yeah, a 'Czar' who is not Senate confirmed gets to tell Cabinet Secretaries what to do...

Nope. I missed that both parties agreed to a 7 day stay to follow Mehta's ruling.
