For anyone lurking about this thread curious about the game, it's on sale till Dec. 1! If you buy it on sale, you can still get the discount for the upcoming Horizons expansion.

Also, here are some friendly newbie tips I posted over on the Elite Dangerous subreddit.

Finally got my iTunes working again and spent pretty much all day (when not working) getting it set up instead of being in Elite.

I picked it up on the Steam sale and went through a few tutorials. I used a 360 controller supplemented occasionally with keyboard (Q and E, specifically), and the only flying issues I had was getting through the mail slot. Once inside, I had no issues landing (although it took me one mis-try to learn that you have to face the tower).

So far, so good...although when I get a bigger ship, getting through the mail slot properly aligned will be a challenge.

Four pips to SYS, don't fly too fast: good to go.

Horizons beta should be dropping soon. I don't have access to it, but of course am keen to read what others think. Exciting!

ETA: Oh, and, one of us! One of us!

I'm re-reading this entire thread from the beginning, but from what I recall there is a Doper group for group play? Right now I'm too dangerous to be around peoples.
Also: "Four pips to SYS" - I can't parse that. Maybe with more experience I'll know what it means.

I played EVE Online for about four years, so it's nice having a game that gives you environment options (solo, group, open).

Here's the thread about our wing.

Knorf and I have been playing in a private group called Mobius. To join: open Friends and Private Groups on the main menu -> Groups - > search for Mobius -> send join request.

Keyboard: left arrow four times. You probably won't need to press all four times, though.

Keep your speed under 100. You hit another ship while speeding, you get fined.

Dumbest thing I ever did at a station was ram an outpost while boosting in an arc. Lost my ship and cargo of rare goods.

BTW: Black Box missions have changed since this thread began. Black Boxes are now found in Salvagable Wreckage. Commercial Samples can be found there as well.

Turns out I can't actually do anything. Fool thing put me in my Diamondback too far from anything that would install the required ship equipment.

Question: how do you tell in what direction to land when landing at an outpost? It seems that half of the time, entering in the direction where you can read the pad number correctly turns out to be on the opposite side of the proper direction.

Found that all that exploration data messes with the respawn and us deep-space explorers are supposed to contact technical support for help. Which I've done.

Once you have docking clearance, your nav-compass shows which direction you need to go.

It gets easier when you have a medium-sized ship. There's only one medium-sized pad and it's on the biggest bay so all you have to do is look for the what part of the station is the biggest.

The Python, with the exception of its superb ability to kill Anacondas, is just not as fun in an RES as the Federal Assault Ship.

Finding the pad is easy. What I want to know is, how do I know in which direction I need to be facing?

On a station, that's easy; it's always the way you came in. On an outpost, however, it's not always "go in the direction where you can read the number correctly" for some reason. I know that the pad has one or two arrows pointing right to it, but how am I supposed to see those when I am approaching?

Which brings up another question: is there a preferred distance from which I should be approaching the entry to a station? Usually, I end up coming in at a right angle to the entry pretty much directly in front of the red/green lights, and one of these days I'm going to crash into a ship trying to enter or leave.

One way to know is that the docking bay holographic number is always placed on the side of the direction you're supposed to be oriented when over the pad. It's visible from either direction. If it's on the near side, you'll have to turn around over the pad.

You could also fly a large vessel (Clipper, Type-9, Anaconda, or one of the upcoming ships, Cutter or Corvette), and not be able to land at an outpost at all. Becomes a moot point, then?

Shows you how much I know - for some reason, I thought the numbers appeared in mirror image if you approached "from the back" and that the numbers appeared on the side you're supposed to enter, rather than the side opposite the one you're supposed to enter.

As for larger ships, with my current credit balance of about 15,000, I don't think that's a problem at the moment... (Yes, I did start playing from 1.0.0.0, but I have been playing very infrequently since my old computer started more or less randomly freezing up on me in February.)

The little ship on your scanner needs to be pointed toward your canopy. If it's pointed toward you, turn around.

This doesn't work on the rare occasion that you're trying to dock on a pad that was recently vacated and has yet to reorient itself.

A trick I've learned when approaching at a right angle is to come to a dead stop then steer left while thrusting right. And hope to not ram anyone while speeding.

One would think an NPC named Edmund Fitzgerald would be piloting a Type-9, not preying on 'em!

Checked out the bulletin board at an outpost and spotted some new mission categories. Most interesting are transports with multiple stops. There are also missions to transport classified data which fail if your ship is scanned, consignments which require finding the customer in space rather than at a dock, and guard the macguffin.

Weird. Ever since taking off from that Icy Body, attempting to approach any other planet gets me stuck in the descent (i.e.: glide) and can only get out with a self destruct. Would like to practice approaching a surface station from orbit rather than simply landing and hoping to run across it.

At least you'll be able to see how close you are to attaining the next rank. I think.

I saw percentages but don't recall if they're for reputation, rank, or both.

There is indeed a new rank progress bar for the Federal and Imperial Navies.

Still....what a grind. >sigh<

Did a bit of upgrading on my Python. New reactor really helps with the heat issues and with a power distributor of the proper size I can fire one laser almost continuously.

I've come up with the ultimate PVE build for the Fer-de-lance.

Here's the loadout, etc., for mine: named Maahes.

ETA: been blasting pirates in Resource Extraction Sites in Hel for the most recent CG. This thing is...well...very, very good at wrecking pirates. I doubt I'll fly my FAS again.

ETA #2: the surface missions can be a blast. No, the payoff doesn't adequately reflect the risk in some situations, but if you ignore that they're very fun.

Dropped the Chaff Launcher and one Point Defense off my Python and bought two A-rated Shield Extenders instead. Having a much better time now and don't really need Chaff unless I go up against a 'Conda.

Back in my Asp to the Wild Black Yonder. Since I went "horizontal" last time, this time I'm going "vertical". And using Captain's Log to track my progress.

Another newbie alert. Finally got this from a Steam sale just after Christmas, and have been flying around and making some money.

I played the old BBC Micro game back in my teens - think I was ranked two less than Elite. In this version, though, I'm still pretty hopeless. Made about 2 million credits in solo play by missioning and trading, with some extra small change from exploration data and a couple of bounties from duffer NPCs who attacked me as I was minding my own business.

So now I'm flying a Cobra for nostalgia reasons, but I can't do combat worth shit. I've managed to run away a lot, but if the pilot is any good at all I'll have no chance. Mainly I've been flying about earning money with no particular purpose in mind but it strikes me that I really need combat practice, even if picking fights is not going to be my primary MO. There will always be some clown who'll interdict me for my cargo, even when I'm running empty.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello. I'll be CMDR Lynnlifga when I feel brave enought enter open play.

Install the highest-rated Shield Booster you can afford into one of the utility slots. Benefits from these stack so more is better.

Try joining us in the Mobius private group (you need to send Mobius a join request). You get the benefits of Open Play without having to deal with trolls in space.
