Sad. Another of those who looked as though they'd live forever.

So now only Phyllis, Beth, and Mr Grant are left?

Is Murray still alive?

Betty White, Joyce Bulifant, and John Amos are still around. Of course, so is Julie Kavner.

Have I missed anybody?

Sue Ann Nivens, "The Happy Homemaker." Evidently yes, still alive.

Bonus points if you can name Rhoda's other sister (who got married in one episode of MTM) and the actress who played her.

I thought Georgia Engel (Georgette Franklin Baxter) was still alive but she died a few months ago. She was a Christian Scientist and the COD is unknown because she never went to a Doctor when she got sick (per wiki).

Nope. Brenda was Rhoda's "youngest sister,"* implying she had at least one other, plus the one who got married on MTM.

The one who got married was Debbie, played by this actress:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0931166/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm

Brenda eventually got engaged, but I don't think we ever saw her married. I was always annoyed that they depicted her as a frumpy and insecure whiner. I thought she was cute as a button!

Small correction: Phyllis's daughter was named Bess, not Beth. She was played by Lisa Gerritsen.

Something interesting about Harold Gould, who played Rhoda's father Martin: Among his many other roles (including Nazi officers on Hogan's Heroes), he was the father of Ann Marie and Richie Cunningham in the pilots of That Girl and Happy Days, respectively. The latter was actually a backdoor pilot (the "Love and the Happy Days" episode of Love, American Style). I remember reading this years ago but had forgotten all about it.

Priscilla Morrill, who played Edie Grant, passed away in 1994. She was also Chrissy's mother on Three's Company.

Harold Gould's most memorable role was in The Sting, as the très suave, stylish grifter Kid Twist. Anyone who hasn't seen this timeless, Perfect Movie, track it down and watch it immediately. Not only does it have Paul Newman and Robert Redford in their absolute PRIME, but the double-crossing the double-crossers plot is brilliant. I've seen this movie maybe 20 times, and it took me years to figure out exactly who everyone was and where they fit into this seriously clever revenge story.

Here is Harold as Kid Twist looking extremely dapper. He was 50 at the time.

... And David Groh, aka "Joe," left this vale of tears on 12 February 2008.

Ted Bessel, "the other Joe," succumbed to an aortic aneurysm on 6 October 1996.

I enjoyed the MTM Show as a kid, and always thought it would be more fun to date Rhoda than Mary. Just as attractive, IMO, and far less boring to spend time with.

Yeah....EVERYONE in that movie was superb. Always fun to see Ray Walston work a non-Martian role.

(I saw him onstage in Cleveland in the 1970s, playing the lead part in Moliere’s The Learned Ladies. Excellent.)

You've got to dig down pretty deep to get to people not mentioned yet who appeared on MTM. Two of my favs are Beverly Sanders who appeared as a waitress 3 times and Pat Finley who appeared twice as basically the same character: once named Twinks and another time named Sparkle. Her biggest role was a Bob's sister on The Bob Newhart Show. And 3 different roles on Lou Grant.

There was also Linda Kelsey, who played Sue Ann's rival Gloria Munson on MTM and reporter Billie Newman on Lou Grant. Still alive at 73.

Mary's Aunt Flo was played by Eileen Heckart (d. 2001).

John Saxon, Phyllis's "escort" in one episode, is still alive at 84.

"Whitney Lewis," who had the hots for Ted and made Mary "look like a dog," was played by Trisha Noble, who was also "Odette Lependieu " in The Rockford Files and is still around at 75. (She was also in the episode of Columbo I saw the other day.)

Here is a list of minor and recurring characters with some that haven't been mentioned yet:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ler_Moore_Show

Nota bene:

Bill Quinn, Mary's dad "Walter Richards," was also Dr McCoy's father in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. (d. 1994)

Lou's girlfriend Charlene McGuire was originally played by Sheree North, aka "Babs Kramer" on Seinfeld. (d. 2005)

A bit off-topic, but in real life, Bill Quinn was Bob Newhart's father-in-law.

Couldn't agree more. Mary Richards was the stuff of grade-school crushes, but Rhoda's wisecracking personality and sexy voice made her a teenage boy's dream.

Pat Finley (Ellen Hartley) was cute as hell.

Why off topic? Both Newhart shows were MTM productions.

Some other MTM actors to add to the list:

Pat "Marilyn Munster" Priest as Sue Ann's little sister Lila. Still alive at 83.

MacKenzie Phillips, Mary's JD "little sister," now 59.

Ed Flanders, "Fr Terrance Brian," aka "Dr Donald Westphal" on St Elsewhere. Passed away in 1995 at the age of 60 (!!!).

Mary Kay Place, Mary's new neighbor "Sally Jo," still around at 71.

Penny Marshall, Mary's other new neighbor "Paula," passed away last December.

Caren Kaye, swimmer/sportscaster "Barbara Jean Smathers," still alive at 68. She was also on Rhoda and The Betty White Show, but not as Barbara Jean.

Thanks for jogging my memory: "Joanne Forbes," Mary's bigoted new friend in "Some of My Best Friends Are Rhodas" (one of the few MTM episodes with a "message"), was played by none other than Mary Frann of Newhart fame!

Two more for now: Lew Ayres (d. 1996 at the age of 88) was Murray's father "Doug Booth." Helen Hunt (now 56) was Murray's daughter "Laurie."

Both Ed Flanders and Lew Ayres were from Minneapolis, where MTM was set.

Looking over the series' complete cast list, I was surprised to find Carole King was in an episode as the aunt of the obnoxious son of Mary's new boyfriend, played by Laurence Luckenbill, Mr Spock's "half-brother Sybok."

David Ogden Stiers was in a couple of episodes as WJM's new station manager; Slim Pickens was in one episode as WJM's owner.

Steve Franken, "Chatsworth Osborne, Jr," was one of Rhoda's boyfriends. So was Henry "The Fonz" Winkler.

Jack Cassidy was "Hal," Ted's competitive brother.

Both John Ritter and Richard Kline ("Jack" and "Larry" on Three's Company) were on MTM.

LOTS of other instantly recognizable names on that list.

Yes, I'm surprised she wasn't shown more often on the show since she came to visit every month.

Prior to being cast for Carol Burnett's show, Waggoner was in the running for the role of TV's Batman in 1965. I believe there are clips from his screen test(s) on YouTube.

Apparently the producers of that show preferred the combination of Adam West and Burt Ward to Waggoner and his sidekick. (West had previously been in the pilot for Alexander the Great, opposite William Shatner.)

Lew Ayres was also Kate Hepburn’s musically-talented (and not allowed to be a professional musician because: high-society rich parents), alcoholic brother in 1937’s Holiday, starring Cary Grant. That’s how I always remember him.

The Ukulele Lady HATES that movie because Hepburn steals Grant away from her awful sister, who is about to marry him. UL also hates her sister, who she pictured stealing me away from her.

[Slight hijack]
Supposedly the producers of MTM has John Belushi (!) in mind for a recurring role, but he was still in his "TV sucks!" phase and turned them down. The mind boggles...

---

I remember watching Rhoda in its original run. The Wedding of The Year followed by the fastest downward ratings spiral since putting Star Trek on Friday nights at 10:00. Boy, was that a Jumping of the Shark.

In any case, Ms. Harper, not your fault. RIP, lady.

John Ritter was very memorable as the Reverend who married Ted and Georgette. He showed up straight from the tennis court in shorts and carrying a racquet. At the time, he was regularly playing the Reverend on The Waltons, one of my favorite characters, and I thought it was a great meta joke to have him playing a preacher on MTM.

That episode contained what may be my favorite line from the MTM Show:

As the impromptu wedding is coming together, Mary pulls Georgette aside and asks if she's really sure about marrying Ted.

Georgette replies that she is.

Mary inquires further, "Then you do love him?"

"Oh yes", Georgette replies. "Somebody has to".

I think my favorite line came when Ted was waiting anxiously to learn if he'd been hired as host of a new network game show. When news doesn't come, he rants about how he didn't want the job anyway, and says he's perfectly happy to stay in Minneapolis. In fact, he LOVVVVVVVVVVES Minneapolis!

Then the phone rings:

"Maybe this is my ticket out of this dump!"

Being from Minneapolis myself, I know exactly how he felt!

I believe the pilot is on YouTube. It's a hoot and a holler. I laugh out loud every time West addresses Shatner as "M'lord."

Oddly enough, it was the produced by the same people who brought Combat! to the small sceen. Whatever could they have been thinking?

"Alexan-DER! Alexan-DER!"

Watching a couple of MTM episodes as part of my memorial tribute when Penny Marshall died, I was reflecting on this too. Mary, gone. Penny, gone. Ed, still with us. You wouldn't have foreseen that in 1976.

West and Shatner were recently reunited in the animated DC movie Batman vs. Two-Face. West was the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Shatner played Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Dent was even drawn to appear like Shatner did in 1966.

I was trying to remember who played Ted's father "Robert" on MTM. Turns out it was Liam Dunn, probably best known as "The Reverend 'Are We Just Jerking Off?' Johnson" in Blazing Saddles.

For those who don't know, she was also Evelyn Harper's bisexual lover in a couple of episodes of Two and a Half Men.

She was also the mother of Amy, Robert's wife, in Everybody Loves Raymond. And she also married Exidor, Mork's eccentric friend, on Mork and Mindy.
