Sure, John Chapman was real, but he wasn't the legendary figure the popular imagination turned him into.

Neckties did not originate as a symbol of slavery. And that article doesn't claim they did.

The article says that neckties function as a symbol of slavery because men wear them involuntarily at work. Equating work with slavery seems like a stretch but the author never says this was the original purpose of a necktie.

The necktie's actual origin is military. Croatian soldiers during the Thirty Years War often tied a thin scarf around their neck. Some of these Croatian soldiers ended up serving as mercenaries in France. King Louis thought the scarfs looked cool and made it an official part of their uniform. The look spread to other soldiers and then into general society. Its intent presumably was to show you were a tough guy who dressed like a soldier.

They went out of fashion fifty years ago. The only men who wear them nowadays are hipsters.

9. Hats
10. Droopy Pants
11. French cuffs on dress shirts when I'm not in the mood or don't have time to futz around with cufflinks.

Also, FTR, I wear a hat. One in summer and a different one in winter. Thank God for single-medium message boards, right?

Also, FTR, I happen to like certain hats on guys. Ball caps not so much, but fedoras and porkpies, yum.
