Didn't notice it before, but Ark: Surivval Evolved is also on a free weekend.

Depth, a sharks vs divers asymetric PVP game, and Dead By Daylight, a 1v4 serial killer / escaping victims stalking game are both free weekends on steam. Strangely enough Dead by Daylight isn't mentioned on the front page, but the game's page lets you download it.

I'll be trying to organize some games of Dead by Daylight this weekend, it's definitely one I was interested in. Depth is pretty good too but we've played that before in another free weekend.

Also Rayman Origins is free to keep on Uplay if you "order" it in the next month or so.

How was Dead by Daylight? I've been playing Damned with the family, which is pretty fun, if not the most polished game I've ever seen.

There's a good game in there, but it could use some balance and polish. The progression system makes it so that you get significant perks after playing hte game for a while which puts new players at a disadvantage, and I hate that sort of game design. The matchmaking isn't that well balanced so you can get pretty screwed by it. And there's some balance issues - part of the core mechanics are that the killer has to put people on some meat hooks and wait for them to die, while their teammates can try to mount a rescue. But there's not enough of a tradeoff in having the killer just camp the guy until he's dead - the killer should have to balance the risks of losing that kill vs the survivors significantly advancing towards their objectives, but the survivors can't make that much progress in that time, so the choice seems to be to just camp the meathooks, which makes the game a lot simpler and more boring. There are all sorts of potential fixes for this - longer meathook time, or giving the survivors a noisy but fast way to repair generators which gives away their position and punishes the killer if he camps the meathooks. Stuff like that.

But the fundamental stealth mechanics are really good, the chasing works well, the game builds legitimate tension. I'm tempted to play it from time to time even though I didn't grab it. There's a Friday the 13th game coming out in a couple of months with the same 1v4 stalking premise, so I was going to wait to see which one turned out better. The Friday the 13th game looked more polished, but also looks like it may be dumbed down for ... other platforms, with features like highlighting the enemy players when you catch a glimpse of them rather than the much better designed stealth system in DBD where you actually have to see someone hiding.

I'd say wait for the other game to come out, and by then DBD will probably have a $10-12 sale anyway, and get whichever one is better.

Dead by Daylight is fun but it's also pretty limited. I played it during the beta and had fun and played it again during the free weekend and had fun. But I never felt like it was something I needed to buy or something my friends and I would be playing regularly. Unless you think you're going to want to play the public matches, you're probably best off waiting for a bundle or deep sale. For myself, half the fun is talking to friends while I'm playing it so public matches aren't a draw for me.

The Crew is the free game this month from Uplay. You have 30 days to grab it and it's yours to keep.

Of Guards and Thieves has a free weekend. It's a multiplayer top-down stealth game. Never tried it but had my eye on it. The free weekend is actually done through the download demo button - I guess the demo version lets you play online but with restricted functionality (limited classes and other stuff) but for the free weekend the demo version has all restrictions unlocked. I might try to organize a game sometime if I can pull myself away from BF1.

For the next 40 hours or so, Dirt 3 is free, requires the creation of a humble store account.

For the rest of the month (I think), Far Cry: Blood Dragon is free on u-play.

And for a free weekend is Squad, a hardcore military sim shooter made by the people who did Battlefield 2: Project Reality.

Outstanding! Far Cry: Blood Dragon was a delightful, hilarious romp with all the solid gameplay from Far Cry 3. Highly recommended to people who haven't played it yet. Tons of fun.

Streamline is free if you install it in the next 24 hours (I don't think you actually have to install it, just click the install button so it gets registered to your account). I don't know if it's any good - reviews are decent - looks like a simple game where you chase around your friends. Price is right. Apparently requires a twitch account to play, it's designed to be heavily twitch integrated.

ubisoft is giving away one game for free each day for the next month, although I'm at their website logged in and having trouble finding details of what game is available today. It looks like some days they're only giving away a limited number; maybe that's the deal today, or maybe I'm just tired and missing something obvious .

AC3 is worth watching for, and I loved Prince of Persia back in the day, may download that one again. The rest of it is ridiculously bad, though--I'm embarrassed to have spread their link.

Today is Ubi's "Free AC3" day; naturally the servers are taking a beating. Activates on Uplay (naturally) not Steam.

I just got it. I started and quit AC1 twice. So boring.

I have heard the sequels were vastly better. Is this true? If so, can I start with AC3 and have fun & understand the story OK? I do not, I think, own AC2.

I've heard from people that you should just start on AC2, since it's just better at everything it does than AC1. I would assume AC3 shares those improvements. You can catch up to the rather silly and convoluted story via synopsis.

AC2 and its sequel AC2:Brotherhood are by far the best of the series. AC3 has mostly the same gameplay, but an inferior story, physical setting, and main character. So I'd play those 2 AC2 games if at all possible first. You can skip AC2:Revelations though, it's a step down from the previous two.

The stories themselves are largely stand-alone in different points of time and place though so playing AC1, AC2, Brotherhood & Revelations isn't a requirement to play AC3.

The internal stories, true. For the external story it's a probably a good idea to read up on the background.

What, you don't enjoy learning everything about Desmond Miles' bartending jobs?
Seriously, can't argue that.

The reason to play AC2 before AC3 is because of the risk of finishing AC3 and saying, "Huh, that was fun." and never going back to the AC series at all. While when you finish AC2 you get one of those rare "...Wow..." experiences from a fantastic game. IMHO.

So AC2 is not just more climbing buildings and doing repetitive assassinations? I was bored and I really, really tried to play AC1.

I loved all the Prince of Persia games, though. I even liked the weird one with the cell-shading graphics.

SPOILER:
There's an organization called Abstergo that controls the world from behind the scenes. They're direct descendants of the Knights Templar from the 12th century. Publicly they're a huge multi-national company, but do plenty of secret work to control governments and other corporations all the way down to spying on everyone through their phones, TVs, etc. There's another secret organization, the Assassins, that have been fighting the Templars since forever. They're completely secret.

Abstergo has a device, the Animus, that lets people relive the lives of their ancestors through "genetic memory". They use it on the protagonist, Desmond Miles, who was raised in the modern Assassins society but left. They make him relive the life of his ancestor Altair (there's an umlaut in there somewhere), an assassin from the 12th-13th century, to find the location of the "Apple of Eden", a powerful, mystical device. For some in-game reason Desmond has to relive several years of Altair's life instead of just jumping to the relevant part, which is why the game actually exists. He assassinates 9 or so important people during this time (and countless guards). Each assassination is accompanied by a 5-10 minute (seriously) deep philosophical discussion between the victim and Altair as to whether the Templar (organization and control for the good of humanity) or Assassin (freedom above all) beliefs are better for humanity. Note, this was eliminated in the future AC games, where assassination conversations are more of the "Oh fuck, my aorta! You suck!" variety.

The game is about 95% Altair, but after each important assassination it switches back the modern world, where Desmond is a prisoner. During this time you find out that you're actually the 17th person they've tried this on, Subject 16 died horribly but has left secret messages for the inevitable 17th subject and one of the scientists, Lucy, is or at least claims to be a member of the modern Assassins Guild. At the end, Abstergo is able to get the location of the Apple of Eden that they wanted, and you find that you've somehow obtained some of the cool assassin abilities that Altair had.

OK, so I don't own Assassin's Creed 2 and it is not on sale.

I'm starting with 3, then. Remember, I hated the first game and am trusting that the sequels were superior. I hope 3 is an acceptable starting point. I will go back and play 2 when it goes on sale and if I find 3 an OK game.

Was 3 a good game?

Well, I hope it is good enough to encourage me to buy AC2 next time it drops to $5 or so. Anyone have a gift key they want to send me of it? I'd happily play 2 if I had a copy, but I'm not paying $19.99 for it.

I'm about ready to murder either Windows 10 or Uplay.

I downloaded and installed AC3 using Ubisoft's Uplay. It won't load, giving my some error about not f inding the Ubisoft game launcher. I unstalled Uplay or the Ubisoft game launcher, and now it gives me some freaking weird error when I install it. About some .dll it can not gain permission to write.

I have now installed Uplay and am installing AC3 in a new folder, one that isn't "important".

Ugh. This is why people pirate games. Well, probably to avoid paying, too. But if AC3, which I have received legitimately from the company will not load, I am just about ready to bootleg a game I own!!!

I prefer Steam. Steam loads things.....pretty much normally for me. I only own a couple Uplay games and this is a total mess.

If it doesn't work this time, I will screenshot my errors and post a GQ thread.

Ugh!

So, the game just loaded up since I installed Uplay and the game in my own personal C:\Games folder.

On Windows 10, should I be avoiding Program Files(x86) now? I am the only user of my computer and I am the administrator, and I believe owner of all folders. I still could not install this game to that folder.

Annoying.

The Program Files directories have some special permissions tagged to them that can make things run unpredictably if they aren't run as an administrator in some cases.

Starting with Windows 7, IIRC, the program files directory was virtualized, which changes how programs can be accessed. Even with administrator rights.

I did get the game up and running by installing both it and the Uplay program into my own C:\games folder.

How odd, though. Never had this issue and have had the computer since 2012.

I did load up the game and play the opening, up to being on a boat heading to America. It's neat. Far, far too early to judge, but neat.

Hoping it is fun enough to encourage me to buy AC2. I assume Steam has a holiday sale/Xmas sale coming? Or someone does? I might even grab AC4 if AC3 is good enough.
