quintessential sports movie

Rudy would be the obvious answer, and cases can be made for The Longest Yard, Field of Dreams, and Rocky. But I'm going with Major Leagues.

- shows what baseball players and managers do behind the scenes
- shows player rituals and psychological games to get the edge
- their ultimate goal was to totally reveal the naked body of their bitchy owner, a truly noble goal
- Bob Uecker nails his role as the lost cause announcer because he's lived it

Superstrength.

- Superman's had that since day one. Flying came later, and invulnerability seems like a side effect.
- Nearly every Marvel superhero gets a measure of this, and sometimes nothing else.
- Those heroes who don't have it tend to find ways to simulate it.

Harrison Ford:

Becomes a breakout star in a supporting role, in the biggest hit of the year.
* Comes right back for the sequel, the biggest hit of its year.
* Returns for a sequel, the biggest hit of its year.

Stars in his own action-hero blockbuster, the biggest hit of the year.
* Comes right back for a sequel, the biggest hit of its year.
* Returns for a sequel, the biggest hit of its year.

Can be the leading man in an Oscar-caliber romantic comedy.
* Can also be the leading man in an Oscar-caliber drama.
* Can be the leading man as an ass-kicking President.

Starred in a TV-show adaptation to acclaim.
* Picked up as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and rabid fans were cool with it.
* Went full circle, now top-billed in that first franchise: biggest hit of the year.

That’s kind of what Hollywood is all about, isn’t it?

The Beverly Hillbillies

- humor is heavily premised on the 'sit' part of the sitcom
- as is so often the case, the show's idea was borrowed from an earlier comedy (Ma and Pa Kettle Go To Town)
- enjoyed high rating throughout the 1960's
- creator Paul Henning went on to copy his own success creating two other successful 'rural' sitcoms, Green Acres and Petticoat Junction

Leonard McCoy:

1 His catchphrase is the fact that he’s a doctor.
2 Per that: he’s damned good at his job, and at other jobs.
3 He cares, passionately, about the well-being of people in his care.
4 He’ll unhesitatingly risk his own life to help save the lives of others.
5 He’s the relatable voice-of-reason everyman, even in far-out scenarios.
6 He repeatedly solves problems by sensibly drugging folks who outrank him.

Really, what more can you ask?

Who’s on first?

Heck, the question isn’t whether it’s on the first-place podium; the question is:

* What’s on second?
* I don’t know.
* He’s on third, we’re not talking about him.
* Who gets the money?
* He does, every dollar. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.
* Who's wife?
* Yes.
* Now who has it?
* Naturally.
* Who?
* Naturally.
* Naturally?
* Naturally.
* So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally.
* No you don't, you throw the ball to Who.
* Naturally.
* ...that’s different.

The charge of the British cavalry's Light Brigade against the wrong artillery battery at the 1854 Battle of Balaclava.

1955 Overthrow of Juan Peron in Argentina

- Juan and Eva Peron were popular because of their extravagance, which later became their downfall
- First time Argentina had ever been attacked on its soil by air when Navy fighter jets bombed the crowd Peron was speaking to
- junta leader Pedro Aramburu made speaking Peron's name a crime
- Aramburu sent kidnappers and assassins after Peron when he was in exile
- Aramburu unearthed Eva from her gravesight and relocated the cadaver to Milan under a different name
- Aramburu was himself kidnapped and murdered, and the parties responsible held his corpse until Eva's was returned

Poker, with honourable mentions to Bridge and Solitaire.

Can be played by any number from 2 upwards.
Card games are often based on playing for money - poker attracts the most.
Has a well-known and long-established World Championship.
Nearly everyone is aware of the basic concept of the game.
Can be picked up by anyone of any age but takes a long time to master.
By far the most-commonly-depicted card game on TV/in films.

Cats.

- the musical produced the requisite super-blockbuster hit . (ie. "Memory"). A must for an ALW production
- stories are merely vehicles to insert songs into. Nowhere is this more evident than with ALW's musical, Cats, which is not even a story but rather a loosely strung together series of character vignettes based on the writings of T S Elliot
- it was the fourth longest running musical in Broadway history.

Aliens at Area 51

- Area 51 is in a secluded desert area perfect for alien experimentation
- Area 51 hosts mysterious military tests (airplanes or UFOs?)
- Area 51 is a tourism draw with Extraterrestrial Highway, Alien Research Center, and Alien Cathouse (alien-themed brothel), among other places to visit
- Area 51 is used in pop culture: Independence Day, Roswell, video games, etc.
- Area 51 is actually there to distract us from the real Area 51, which is called Area 52.

Huh, didn’t mean to bring this to a halt; I figured it’d maybe come down to the literal smoking gun versus the literal knife in the back — with an argument to be made that, while knives and guns have other uses, the sinister garrote only ever means one thing; plus the question of whether ‘blunt instrument’ is too broad to count as a category, and a case for poison as the all-time classic.

All kinds of possibilities, really. But, if not: quintessential fairy tale?

since TOWP has already engaged in bit of his own analysis on the question of murder weapons, let's go with the blank canvas and choose the quintessential fairy tale....

Red Riding Hood,

- it was written (well, collected really) by the Grimm Brothers
- the story involved an innocent young girl
- it featured talking animals (a wolf)
- earliest versions have disturbing sexual undertones

You can see the body in Cooperstown, NY

Quintessential once huge now defunct corporation.
