The work she does on thrusters and frame-shift drives makes Farseer probably the most useful engineer in the game. My Asp Explorer has some of her level 4 FSD work.

Had my first taste of the engineering system. It took 32 jumps to get from Maia to Farseer's system; it would take 25 to get back. Not bad. I just wish I had saved some exploration data to sell to her.

I suppose now I get to grind materials until I hate the system.

Materials aren't that much of a grind, except for rare stuff like Yttrium or very rare stuff like Antimony.

Haven't they changed the material grind now, to make it different? I haven't looked at it since they did it

All I know is that I rarely surface mine yet need to drop materials every so often to make room in their hold for the rarer stuff.

Next time there's a Steam sale, I'm gonna pick up another copy. Set up a second account for exploration.

Any tips on what kind of weapons to use (on a Python)? I've had a bit of success with beam laser, but I gather that the community generally thinks they're not very good.

I decided to head out on a real long-distance passenger mission. I'm over 1,200LY from home so far; about 100 jumps into a >900-jump trip each way. Even though I replaced all of my cargo racks with fuel tanks, my plotted route shows no fuel stars. It's just brown dwarf after brown dwarf. The weird thing is that there's a red dwarf near the last star on the route. I re-plotted the route to there, and I'll figure out things from there.

Edit: This was just after refueling, for the record.

You haven't accidentally changed the galaxy map to only show you brown dwarves, have you?

No, I can still see the occasional red dwarf in the region; my plotted route just didn't pass by any of them.

Here’s a good discussion on weapons:
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDanger...weapons_guide/

It looks like weapons are conditional (some better against large ships, some better against small ships) but beam lasers are not good in general because despite a high DPS they drain capacitors too quickly. Look over that list to see the merits of each type.

I run one beam, two pulse, and two cannons. Three beams created too much heat.

Try turning off those lesser stars. In the Galactic Map, go over to Filters (they're between Bookmarks and Options), change Allegiance to Star Class, uncheck L-type, T-type, Y-type, and Proto, then apply filter to route.

Thanks for this. It increases my remaining jumps from 770 to 785, but I'll probably save time overall.

Is there a limit to how much exploration data I can gather at once before selling it? I expect that I'll have a lot of it if and when I finish this expedition.

Oof. I just passed the halfway point of the first leg of this journey. 450 jumps to go, and my resolve is weakening.

So far as I can tell, no. But you sell it a page at a time, so it can take a while when you get back. It'll make you REALLY good friends with whoever you sell it to, so you might not want to do that blindly.

AIUI, there is a limit to the amount sold in one day. I think it's 10 million per 24 hours.

Nothing says it all has to be sold in one place.

I know I'm at least going to sell to the two engineers I have unlocked. Maybe I'll see about unlocking some others before I sell all of my data.

Bear in mind that engineer approval doesn't change right away. Need to back up to the main menu then reenter for increased access.

Now to find some Datamined Wake Exceptions for Level 5 FSD range...

I'm definitely not going on any long trips before getting a level 5 FSD range upgrade. I've got a level 2 upgrade on it now, and this trip is brutal. I have a range of about 18 LY, but most jumps are about 11-15 LY. 224 more jumps until I reach my destination.

I've been getting ~33.5 with a Level 4 in my Asp Explorer. Jet-cone boosts really help once you get the hang of 'em. Gotta watch out for the exclusion zone; if you hit it while in the cone, you'll never get back out. Jet-cones also are detrimental to your FSD's integrity so you'll want to either install a maintenance limpet system or check for any Asteroid Bases along your route.

Got two DWEs from scanning wakes out of a Distribution Center in a famished system. One will be put to use in my Corvette.

Okay, I've made it all the way out to Skaude AA-A H294. Now for the long trek back home.

I hope I don't have to worry about my ship falling apart before I get home. What's that ship integrity thing that shows up in advanced maintenance?

If I crash before I get home, I'll lose all of my scan data, right?

Yes, you'll lose all your data if your ship is destroyed before you sell it.

Your ship integrity drops while you're in supercruise. As far as I can tell, it can get down to 0% without disastrous consequences. I think low ship integrity makes module failures more likely if you get attacked, but don't quote me on that.

Basically, low ship integrity makes the hull more vulnerable to damage.

I think I'll be okay, then. I did make one mistake where I tried to jump without moving away from a star after refueling, but my most damaged system is at 94%.

My second account (Commander Cody Eyrmon) is coming along nicely. Having the game installed on both my desktop and Surface Pro enabled both of my commanders to wing up for trading; parked Commander Cody in the largest station in his home system and Commander Holdstock did all the work in his Type-10. Main made a few million in profits and alt got enough in trade dividends for a Hauler.

Will soon sell the Hauler for a Cobra MkIII.

I finally made it back home. It was not worth it for just 20M. Hopefully I'll get a lot of exploration rank, though.

First time I took on a Famous Explorer, we returned during an exploration Community Goal. So far, that's the only time I cracked the top 10% in any CG.

Well, dang. I'm trying to unlock Marco Qwent, for which I need a Sirius system permit. I'm in Procyon, and as I'm trading in exploration data for rep with Sirius Corp, I see a mission to get the permit; I need to be allied with them. By the time I trade in enough exploration data to be allied, the mission is gone. Oh, well.

Commander Cody now has a Diamondback Explorer and already has Farseer at level 4, mainly due to selling exploration data to & from Maia. Hoping the next batch of data is enough for 5. Will likely wait until 3.0 goes live with its new engineering procedures before having her work on the FSD.

Just started playing this a few weeks ago, extremely addicted. Still having a hard time finding barnacles and those meta alloys for Farseer... I just bought a Viper for speed (All B rated) and SRV and have been having fun bouncing around planets, but have yet to find them, just the bronzite stuff. Where can I find these elusive things? Any particular systems? Any help or tips is appreciated!

Thank you!!! Finally can get some needed upgrades, I already have maxed my limit of materials from scavenging pirates I eliminate and have a ton of exploration data to sell (took me forever to get an Advanced Discovery Scanner) as well. I hope it's worth the 30 some odd jumps each way. Lol

You know, I didn't like the game at first (Mainly because I found Hutton Orbital early one, I'm patient but I have limits), but I always keep at things and I am glad I did, its great!! A game that actually has a challenge and doesn't try to hold my hand, is a welcomed change. And it doesn't turn me into a raving psychopath like playing Dark Souls.

Hutton is a real outlier, no other port is so far from the jump-in point. There are systems in Eagle Nebula that are closer together than the distance from Alpha Centauri to Hutton. The trick to Hutton was taking multiple missions at the same time, each one worth over a million credits, but that may have changed with the nerf to long-distance bonuses.

Do the pre-game tutorials, then the in-game mission tutorials. Use a trading guide like EDDB to fill up your cargo racks. EDDB and Inara are updated real-time via an app that runs concurrently with the game. Every time a commander using the app docks, it updates the database.

I appreciate these tips! Newman Hub is another really sour trip (Kappa Reticuli? Baedule?). I forget what system that was in, not as bad as Hutton but yeah. I would do those long hauls but I'm at the point where my most valuable missions are worth about 500kC. Once it doubles I won't have much of an issue, just lacking an incentive at this point. I've been focusing mainly on combat as I have a pavlovian complex, I need some gratification, trading takes too long for me because of the traveling between some systems, I just don't have the time to invest. I do exploration and mining in between combat though. I could only wish for some kind of penalty in trade for faster travel.

I second the notion of doing the training, especially the combat ones. Makes things much easier once you master that. Make getting a better ship and some extra credits to rebuy it if you destroy it, some of your priorities. Bounty hunting makes a lot of money once you get decent at combat.

Be sure to hold your exploration data until you can sell it to Farseer. Great way to improve your status with her, should be able to get at least Grade 3 without having her build anything.

3.0 will definitely change materials acquisition. I know there's going to be some sort of materials exchange but I didn't take a look at one in the beta so I don't know how it'll work.

I just got this too.

I was trying the first tutorial and could not figure out how to change to the Contacts tab on my display. I swear I pushed every button on my keyboard but somehow missed it.

I quit the game in frustration and played Warhammer II instead.

I have the "change tabs" function mapped to the shoulder buttons on my controller.
