What's your "clear my browser history" when you die?

We all (well, several, anyway) have a little bit of kink that we'd rather not have our loved ones find after we pass on. I overheard a married couple once say that they CAN'T die at the same time, because there'd be no one to dispose of all of the items that they don't want their parents or children to find.

What's your plan to sterilize your home/office/files from those toys/leather/VHS tapes?

I pretty well-known for having an expansive anime collection, which can be (and is) considered to be about 90% porn for the nudity alone by my rather prudish family. They might find things that would horrify them, but I doubt I could get them to think I'm more amoral than I already am.

well I certainly ain't gonna tell you, if I'm that worried about what my family is going to think about the various items in my nightstand

I'm gonna be dead, hopefully after those things are of any use so will have gotten rid of them at that point, and if not, I shrug

I just put it in a random folder in an odd place with a techie sounding name and hope it goes unnoticed. Even a half-hearted search would find it. Not even very porn-y stuff, just some peculiar preferences.

Oh, no you got it backwards. I've got notes allover things. There's gonna be some raised eyebrows.
I just hope my spirit hangs around long enough to see the kerfuffle.

Ok, NM, I just changed my mind. There's gonna be a big fire in my burn barrel tomorrow.

Does clearing your browser history really hide anything? Asking for a friend.

I live alone, so I don't really have a plan, but there's not really anything I'd care if my family found.

I had an aunt related to me through marriage once ask me if I could hook up her dead mother's computer that had one of those old type webcams that were separate and would sit on top of the monitor.

As I was setting it up I looked at some of the photos expecting to find some family pics or something, what I did find was nude pics of her elderly mother that were seemingly taken at her advanced age and not too flattering to say the least.

I figured ignorance was bliss and deleted all such photos I found and figured I was saving her from seeing embarrassing photos of her mom, and I don't think she is really going to download any programs to recover deleted files.

I have no history to clear as I always browse in incognito or private mode, even the most innocuous sites.

What you and your friend should do is to have an agreement to go over to each other's house to delete certain directories from the hard drive and to dispose of the printed pornography, VHS/DVD/Bluray titles and the toys. In short, a mutual sanitize-the-house pact.

Huffpo is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Lost interest in Porn, as it seems every video is about fucking your sister or mom.

Discovered erotic fiction, but I'm not too embarrassed about that. Maybe I should be, IDK. Seems like it's a step above though since it involves reading. Lol

I don't think modern Windows easily lets you password protect folders like older versions did. You need to store it in a ZIP and password that or something.

Casually speaking, sticking it in a folder titled "Backup Graphic Drivers - Obsolete" a layer or two down the file hierarchy is probably good enough unless people are actively hunting for stuff. Tell Windows not to display in your Recently Viewed folders for best results.

Considering the cannons, meat cleavers, and assorted bits and pieces of cars and motorcycles -------- the cousins who have to clean all this shit up when I'm gone aren't going to worry about some common porn.

If you're really worried about this, you can take some precautions to ensure your data can't be easily viewed after you are gone. For your computer, there are whole drive encryption programs where you have to enter a password during bootup to allow the data to be decrypted. Even if someone pulls the drive, all data is encrypted and they wouldn't be able to read anything. Keep a lock on your phone so that it could not be accessed and they'd have to do a full reset to use the phone. It's a good idea to have a lock on your phone anyway. If you lose the phone there is likely a lot of personal data, emails, etc. that a crook could exploit.

In my experience, when people die, the living sort through their stuff looking for valuables, not dirt. I imagine my family would just trash my computer or wipe it for a new install without even booting it up.
And with nosy children in my house, I am already without any tangible items.

Same. The most controversial things on the various hard drives my PC at home can access are somewhat unauthorised downloads of various cheesy US TV shows. My nephews and niece are free to discover those.

Well, honestly, I don't have much to sanitize. I just sort of assumed that deleting your browser or seach history doesn't mean there isn't a record that could be dug up, if someone wanted. I'm genuinely curious how far out from you own computer you can erase your history.

Someone needs to invent a dead man’s switch for a folder. Password protected with everything wiped with multiple layer overwrite deletion if you get the password wrong three times.

Folks are answering more about what happens with the computers. But I think that the greater concern might be the stash of paddles/whips/riding crops stored behind the spanking bench and St Andrew's cross stored in a walk-in closet.

What's the plan for THOSE items?!

When I'll die it won't be matter what's in my browser history, is it? Mabe, browsing gay porn or something like that may be embarrassing (that's the most "incredible" thing about my browser history), but not for me... especially if I'm dead.

I use Firefox, and it erases everything every time I close it.

I don't have anything "bad" in storage. I've got internet access, which means I have on-demand 24/7 access to more porn than I could possibly ever watch. There is no need to ever "save" anything; someone else has already done that for me.

Other than a bit of a penchant for swinging/group sex, my wife and I are pretty vanilla. There are some toys around the house but nothing I wouldn't expect most couples to have. Unless someone is going into our Facebook profiles after we die and see a few groups we are members of, I don't think there is anything around that would cause too much consternation. We both lock our devices and others do not have access so I don't think we need to worry.

For some people, saving is part of the kink - it's not enough to view the porn, you also have to possess the porn.

... and I think I'll stop talking now.

You've never found something so good you just need to revisit it? Or, you uh... didn't need to finish it at the time and knew there were good parts you didn't get to?

I don't care about the bag of ordinary sex toys. They're as mundane as my spork collection.

I wouldn't want my kids to read my journals, though.

Then memorize the title or keywords. If you can't find it again, no big deal, life's too short to worry about missing the climax of a porn clip.

Mrs. Homie knows that I find the idea of boning a dude exciting on a sort of "fantasize about it" level. She doesn't know that I watch a lot of gay porn. I guess she'll find out if she survives me.

For the record, I'm not closeted. I'm confidently straight, but I do have that "kink" (for lack of a better choice of words).

I have nothing on my hard drive that I would not want someone to see. On one of my flash keys, though, I have a giant folder full of pictures of women; however, there is nothing remotely approaching hard porn there. There is a subfolder marked "nudes", but this is actually maybe the smallest folder of them all; it's just a handful of more artistic photographs, not sure if any one of them is even full frontal. Basically the vast majority is things like vintage 60s/70s images of women in miniskirts and stuff. Nothing I would be particularly ashamed for anyone to see after my death.

However, I also have a physical folder with a hand-drawn comic of my own creation inside. This is the last incarnation of a work of art which I consistently worked on, modified, destroyed, and re-did in my younger years, where I drew women who bore out various features that reflected various fetishes of mine (this refers pretty much only to how I drew their hair and clothing, nothing particularly kinky here either). These characters (all of three in total) are derived from how I drew April O'Neil of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I drew comics for my schoolmates as a pre-teen, with some features inspired by Cindy Crawford, Brooke Shields and the Heathers actress Lisanne Falk. As the comic hardly tells a real story of any great interest but was pretty much only meant to show the women of my invention drawn by hand and looking a certain way, I feel I would be embarassed for someone after my death to study this artefact and come to realization of what fetishes I have and what exact outfits I would like to see a woman in. I hope I will be able to throw the folder away at some point close to when I feel death nearing, if I still have it at that time. But it's not something I'm losing sleep over.

I use my old computer and phone for my more “adventurous” browsing habits. I assume anyone who finds them will just send these outdated models back to Apple for recycling or maybe to the pawn shop. Going through my everyday laptop and phone will reveal everyday boring websites like 538, ESPN, Politico, and of course the SDMB.

But then you're relying on others to keep the videos of your favorite actor/actress/scene for you to view again. See: Traci Lords.

From your wife or parents? Generally yes.

From a dedicated law-enforcement grade forensic analysis? Not really.

For people who are that concerned about their "pron" collection, generally a VeraCrypt encrypted drive and setting your browser to "delete history on exit" should reduce the risk of awkward whispered conversations at your funeral should you die before getting to your laptop.

I have plenty of porn. I doubt any of it will surprise who ever takes care of my stuff.

I SAY THE FOLLOWING IN COMPLETE SERIOUSNESS

When I do die (I am not a threat to myself or others. But we all gotta go sometime) I'd like the SDMB to put together a thread of memories of me. Each memory should be a completely fabricated story (but with real, mundane details) of how I was the poster's lover. The thread should then be printed out and presented to my loved ones.

I'm a leather titleholder. My house looks like it. Assuming he survives me, I'd suspect my partner would unbolt the cross from the bedroom floor and take the floggers to his place. And empty the leather closet, and take pretty much every piece of art off the walls. And "adopt" my dog.

I don't really expect any of my family to come all the way out here in any circumstance. And nobody knows the password to my desktop computers.
