From Rolling Stone:

Quote:
Is Holding Fake Lunch Contests Trump’s Pettiest Scam?

The Trump campaign has held several contests to dine with the president. No one appears to have done so

President Trump is a con man. He conned people into giving to his now-defunct foundation only to use the donations for personal expenses. He conned people into spending more money than they could afford on the now-dissolved Trump University. He conned lenders into subsidizing his floundering real estate projects. The list goes on, and, as is made clear on a near-daily basis, it’s not limited to Trump’s life as a private citizen.

The pettiest grift of Trump’s presidency may be a scheme that was recently uncovered by Popular Information’s Judd Legum. As Legum notes, the Trump campaign has held at least 15 online contests in which the winner was promised a meal with Trump. Many of them also promised travel accommodations. All supporters had to do to enter the contests, which were promoted heavily on social media, was donate to the campaign. “I just saw the most recent list of Patriots who have contributed to win a trip to meet me in Chicago on October 28th, and I noticed you STILL haven’t entered,” read one email regarding a contest for a supporter and a guest to have lunch with Trump in Chicago.

This may sound great for Trump supporters, but there’s one problem: despite the untold sums of money raised off the contests, no one appears to have actually sat down for a meal with the president.

There are 197 Republicans in the House.

Last night, Representative Peter King (R-NY) announced he is retiring, making him the 20th House Republican to announce their retirement in the past year, pushing the share of Republicans tired of the shitshow/convinced they're going to lose their seats, to 10% of their House representation.

Two questions:
1. What departments would be in charge of investigating this?
2. Would the heads of those departments happen to be Trump appointees?

Dinner with Trump would have to be a thing of value for gambling laws to be implicated.

The Democratic National Committee should run a fundraising campaign promising that winners(1) will *never* have to have dinner with President Trump.

(1) We're all winners if Trump is defeated next year.

I would donate to that (well, assuming I hadn't reflexively already thrown out/deleted it). But assuming that I actually saw or read the promotion, they would get a campaign contribution out of me for that.

They mentioned that on the news this morning. Brightened up my Monday considerably, which isn't an easy thing to do. He always was such a shit-show that I didn't even want to shop in any stores in his district. The only thing he had going for him (small consolation) was that he was surrounded by even bigger shit-shows, but dammit, he was a local(ish) shit-show and the smell kept wafting over here.

So the Anonymous guy in the White House is going to publish a book.

And the Justice Department is telling him now:

https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/...ebar_expansion
Quote:
The Justice Department is telling the publisher of "The Warning," an anonymous tell-all book on the Trump White House, that the writer may be violating non-disclosure agreements with the book.
But:

Trump NDAs can’t silence ex-White House officials: legal experts

(Reuters) - In a provocative column Sunday night, the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration required senior White House officials to sign agreements forbidding them to disclose any confidential information about their work – not just during their time in office but even after they leave the White House.

...

Under case law from the federal appellate courts, including the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1972’s U.S. v. Marchetti and the D.C. Circuit in 1983’s McGehee v. Casey, ex-employees have a First Amendment right to disclose non-classified information.

“The government has no legitimate interest in censoring unclassified materials,” the D.C. Circuit wrote in McGehee, which involved an ex-CIA agent protesting the agency’s censorship of his manuscript after he submitted the work for pre-publication review.

McGehee’s employment agreement, the court said, “does not extend to unclassified materials or to information obtained from public sources. The government may not censor such material, ‘contractually or otherwise.’” (The D.C. Circuit was quoting from the 4th Circuit’s Marchetti decision in its reference to McGehee’s contract with the CIA.)

Those appellate rulings would be a big First Amendment obstacle were the Trump administration to attempt to enforce a non-disclosure agreement that barred former White House officials from revealing non-classified information.

And there’s an additional snag once Trump leaves office, according to Florida professor Fenster. Enforcement of any NDA would be up to the U.S. government, not to President Trump once he is a private citizen. A future president may not want to commit administration resources to policing former Trump officials.

“You could understand how someone like Donald Trump, who had never been in government … would come into government and want to do this,” said Fenster. “But it’s just not going to happen.”
Is the Justice Department becoming the Injustice one?

My Dinner with Don J. (2019)

An increasingly uncomfortable contest winner endures a two-hour ranting monologue by his dinner companion in this fart-house cinema classic set entirely in a Palm Beach Burger King. Adapted from a tweet, this comedy-horror film is the first full-length feature from director James O'Keefe. Rated PG-13 for gobbledygook, drug use and infantile situations.

Is that even a question? I would argue it's been sliding all my life (> 1/2 century) regardless of political party and had been steadily accelerating the entire time, but this administration has truly put the pedal to the metal.

There's a pattern here. Jr. won't answer any questions, he will only spout. Lindsay Graham won't read the impeachment testimony transcripts, while insisting "there's nothing there." Pubbies everywhere insist tax cuts for the wealthy pay for themselves, despite the evidence. And if there is an actual case for the assertion that climate change is a hoax, I have never seen it.

False bare assertions: the Republican way.

He's so fucking incompetent he can't even scam for profit. I think that his tax returns, when we eventually get them, will eventually show years and years of write-offs. Other public records will eventually show fraud.

Now if only there were tapes being made in this White House, I bet you there would be one where Trump is heard saying:
TRUMP: I am NOT going to do that stupid Arlington again. It is SO boring.

STAFF: Sir, you can't just play golf on Veteran's Day.

TRUMP: Why not? But okay, find me something else to do that is not SO BORING. Nobody cheers for me and it's all that standing and nobody tells me I'm great and the stupid wreath thing is heavy and nobody calls me Sir or talks about me at all.

STAFF: How about the NYC parade? We'd be sure that there would be plenty of patriots near you to give you the reception you deserve.

TRUMP: Well, okay. It's bound to be better than stupid Arlington, even if it's stupid New York with all those nasty Democrats. Maybe I can have lunch with some of the Saudis living in Trump Tower, eh? They're always nice. Let Pence do the stupid Arlington thing.
Who'd bet against the likelihood that Trump did indeed say something like this? Oh, to be able to let the American public in on such conversations.....

I was watching a classic the other evening. Mr. Sulu was running around bare-chested threatening anyone and everyone with an epée, Mr. Riley was sitting at an engineering console doing karaoke a cappella, Mr. Spock was shedding green Freudian tears, and the ship was on the verge of becoming a stratospheric barbecue. Then I became confused, for I thought I had seen every episode of The West Wing and never realized that Aaron Sorkin was gifted with such prescience.

In fairness, AIUI, the DOJ misgivings are because 1) whenever anyone with a security clearance writes a book, they're required to pre-clear it with the Feds to ensure that no classified material is being disclosed, and 2) even though Anonymous is still anonymous, if his/her claim to being a "senior administration official" is true, then s/he pretty much had to have had a security clearance. The Anonymous author (again, AIUI; IANAL) is actually at some risk of legal action in that regard, and IIRC the portion of the author's proceeds not being donated to free-speech causes are being reserved for potential legal defense costs.

The Trump-specific NDAs, basically "you can never speak ill of me or I'll sue you," are nonsense and unenforceable in government, as noted in that Reuters cite -- but that's a different thing altogether.

No. I wouldn't do that to anyone (As a SCUBA diver, I know a little bit what that may be like. I don't dive anymore. Sinus problem, I'm not a safe buddie).

Trump should just pay for his crimes. There are plenty. I think we should just start with his fake University. He stole peoples dreams. All for a quick buck.

Probably hoped his home town won't boo him.

Guess what. New York hates his guts too. Remember, they knew what a scumbag he was, before the rest of the country.

According to Propublica, Trump is only responsible for 797 new jobs being created since he became president.

They have receipts (scroll ALL the way down).

Asked what she would say to Trump if she met him, she said, “Fuck you.”

That's a New Yorker.
For a New Yorker, that's equivalent to "Have a nice day!" (being a New Yorker myself).

...President Trump's Twitter account sure is lit up with activity about the "boring" impeachment hearing that he's "not watching."

Trump, the White House says, has simply been too busy on Wednesday to watch the first official hearing in the impeachment inquiry, with White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham saying, "He's in the Oval in meetings. Not watching. He's working."

Well, this time he did not call it a "fake impeachment hearing". Guess it's dawning on him that he very well may face consequences for his impeachable acts.

You'll be pleased to learn there is already a ruling by the DC Circuit denying Trump's motion for review of its earlier decision in the Mazars case. (Reuters)

The 8-3 vote by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, declining the Republican president’s request to rehear arguments that the subpoena to Mazars LLP was illegitimate, brings Democrats closer to shedding light on his business interests and how he built his fortune.
All that's left is SCOTUS, and I'll be surprised if they agree to take it up since there are no conflicting rulings of lower courts to resolve.

Moreover, one imagines that the unanimous ruling in US v. Nixon establishes an overwhelming precedent when it comes to executive privilege.
