General ringtone: "I Can't Decide" by the Scissor Sisters.
Special ringtone for the wife: "Redneck Woman" by Gretchen Wilson.

My favorite one I've ever heard: one of the undercover cops would sometimes get calls from his confidential informants. For them, his ringtone was "The Freaks Come Out At Night" by Whodini.

My text message alert noise, incidentally, is one of those droid turrets from Portal saying, "Hey, it's me!"

I wanted mine to be the Doctor Who theme but I never found one I liked and don't know how to make them.

I wanted to make Carmina Burana (The Omen theme) my ringtone for work and a certain co-worker but I didn't buy it from iTunes so they won't let me make it a ringtone and again, I don't know how to make them.

I'm such a nerd, I've edited mine down to loop seamlessly and given them punny names:
  • Green Onion Rings (The opening bit from Booker T. & the MG's "Green Onions")
  • Ring Ring Ring (with a Swing) Gene Krupa's opening drum solo from "Sing Sing Sing (with a Swing) by Tommy Dorsey"

Theme to "Kill Bill."

For text messages or voice mail I've had a variety, but my favorite is the "I'm a monster, rawr!" sound bite from one of the D&D 4th edition promo cartoons.

"Temptation Sensation" by Heinz Kiessling (better known as the theme music for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

When I get a text, it's that crickty sound that the communicator badges made on Star Trek: the Next Generation.

When Girl Wonder calls, it's "I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace (she picked it!). For everyone else, it's "Hangingaround" by Counting Crows.

ETA: When my little brother calls, it's Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," which he says is the worst song in the world.

Golden Earring's Long Blond Animal. It fits well for my ex-wife.

Now that I can make different ring tones for everyone I'll have to figure out some new songs.

I added the Doctor Who theme (9th) for calls from Mrs MB and the Kimmunicator tone for voicemail/messages. The default is still the Torgo Theme.

Right now it's Stephen Colbert's cover of Friday. It was actually really hard to get a section without too much cheering going on.

My text message is the "Doors Closing" announcement on the Chicago L trains. And e-mail is Strong Bad saying "Check Your E-mail."

There's probably a reason why I leave my phone on vibrate when I'm out in public.

Be careful what you wish for. One of the default ringtones for our office VOIP phones is a man or a woman saying "are you there? Are you there?". Shit gets old really quickly. Of course it's not a turret (whatever that is ), but it does suck a lot.

In the game Portal, there are these killer robots called turrets. They stand on 3 legs with a little laser detection beam coming out the front. If they detect you, they shoot and kill you. They have adorable lil voices, and say things like "Hello, are you still there?", and "There you are". Then they shoot at you.

Mine has been the theme song from "The Magnificent Seven" for a while now. But I've got a new phone so maybe it is time for a new ring tone. I'm thinking that maybe it ought to be the sound of a Ferrari engine.

The only thing like a song I had was The Hamster Song, which was cute, but I prefer sounds so it didn't last. For a very long time it was the phone ring sound from "24." The sound needs to catch my ear in potentially noisy places so it needs to be distinctive for me. So I use the Close Encounters tone thing. Those five tones in a row cut through any ambient noise and go straight to my ear.

Default is the Three Stooges Theme (starting at 15 sec.)

Text alert is the klaxon from the TV show Emergency!

Mom calling is Dig We Must.

One friend of mine gets Lovers Theme.

In October, I switch them all to things like Halloween 1978 and the "They're all going to laugh at you!" sequence from Carrie.

I don't like whole songs as ring tones. So I tend to cut out 5-10 seconds from a song as my ring tones. Usually from the intro or a good instrumental part (don't want lyrics).

Currently I use a clip from Es geht voran by Welle:Erdball. I've also used acouple of Yazoo dongs like Don't go and Goodbye 70s which also have nice instrumental parts.

I only use two tones, "made" them myself.

- Incoming Call: first four measures of Brown Sugar

- Missed a Call / New Voicemail: "The chord" that opens A Hard Days Night.

I've seen this before but never bothered to try it. I tried it last night, it wasn't as easy as it sounded but I figured it out eventually. I made the Carmina Burana one and another for my BF's ringtone (a song he likes). Hook up my phone, sync it and neither ringtone worked. A missing file error with the first and the second was too long. If there was anything in the instructions saying how long to make it, I missed it.

My usual tone is "Manhattan Skyline" by David Shire, specifically 1:10-1:26. My old tone for Airman was Cake's "Mahna Mahna" but it's now "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin. My relatives get "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor." I'd change it to "The Empire March" if I had the time or inclination to edit it down.

Currently it's Phineas and the Ferb-Tones' Gitchee Gitchee Goo.

When my husband calls it plays the theme from Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which used to be the default ringtone.

My dad gets Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher," my younger sister's is Kansas's "Wayward Son," and my youngest sister's is Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwoʻole's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

Ever since I was able to lay my hands on it, my ringtone's been "Gunfight Epiphany," which is the theme song from the late, lamented FX show, Terriers.

Before that it was Doctoring the TARDIS, but what I really wanted was the sound of the TARDIS materializing from the new show. Never could find a decent sound file of that, though.

Mine's "A Little Less Conversation".
Can you tell I don't talk on the phone much except for when necessary?

I need to find another ringtone for my sweetie's number, though, in case he gets the wrong idea.
