Apparently it's an option well worth exploring.

There was some discussion about it in our own press last night but those speaking about it didn't want to offer hope ahead of a determination of efficacy. So... I guess we'll soon know. Let's hope so.

The version I first heard about was a 1-to-4 scheme, and that was from a doctor somewhere in Europe. So multiple patients on one ventilator seems at least plausible.

If I'm not mistaken it's basically an air pump and some hoses, with some control circuitry. You'd have to try to match patients, as the article mentions.
