It's Official: Jean Luc Picard is back!!

Patrick Stewart announced a few minutes ago at the big Trek convention in Las Vegas that he is coming back as Picard in an upcoming new Star Trek series. Don't have a link but you can see the announcement on his Twitter.

I didn't believe it would happen but I am very happy. Always was a big fan of the actor and the character.

He'll need to wear a tractor-beam belt in case he breaks a hip.

Just kidding. If the end result is more Orville-like and less Discovery-like, I'll be happy.

Another detail: it will be set 20 years after Nemesis. I also believe it will be on CBS Streaming like Discovery.

I'm glad he's back, but I have no plans to subscribe to the streaming service, so I'll never see the show.

Please tell me Q is also coming back.

When John De Lancie as Donald Margolis on Breaking Bad uttered the words "you miserable little smackhead!" to Jesse Pinkman, I was like, "that's seriously Q delivery right there."

I'm really excited about this. As long as it's exactly the opposite of the shitfest that Discovery is.

Now I gotta know if this is a full Star Trek: The Next Generation revival. And if so, will they bring back Data? Did his personality re-form in B-4's brain? Will Worf be onboard? Or is this an entirely new crew?

They might throw us a fast one by showing Picard's post-Starfleet career. Does he have Irumodic Syndrome?

It's not a TNG revival. All we know is it takes place several years after Nemesis.

And hopefully it will avoid all the "I'm the new Art Director and my vision is..."-itis. Fuck your vision. Star Trek is Star Trek - stop fucking with it!

Apparently this show is being run by Kirsten Beyer who has written a lot of novels in the post-Nemesis universe. And unlike the Discovery crew she apparently cares deeply about characterization and continuity. And writing characters who aren't all human garbage.

I'm curious if Picard will make an occasional appearance or be in every episode.

I can't imagine Patrick taking on the weekly grind that he worked before. He was in the majority of the scenes in many episodes.

I'd like to see a few episodes that focus heavily on Picard. Then let the new cast carry the majority of the season.

What I'd hate is Picard in cameo scenes. Don't waste the character like that.

Dude still does eight shows a week in London and New York from time to time. I'm sure he can handle the shooting schedule assuming there will be a large cast. I doubt we'll see him in action scenes or the like. He's almost 80.

He just recently finished a sitcom series called Blunt Talk. He is still on top of his game, and I imagine if he does need to take things a bit easier, this won't exactly be an action series.

I don't disagree about her feelings on Character and continuity but she is also on the writing staff of Discovery.

FWIW at SDCC a Discovery panel discussed how the show would be tighter with Continuity in its second season.

Re: Picard. Excited about the News I showed my girlfriend one of my favorite Picard episodes: The Drumhead. Now she's hooked on TNG.

This is Jean Luc Picard. You think you can keep us out of Florida? We're moving in lock, stock and barrel. We're gonna be in the pool. We're gonna be in the clubhouse. We're gonna be all over that shuffleboard court. And I dare you to keep me out!

I'm actually a little worried. He said this wasn't TNG, and then avoided saying the one word I was listening for when he made his promise: optimistic. That's what we need. Okay, so he's not a Captain anymore, and apparently not just an Admiral, given how he talks about it. But I want to see optimism.

And they'd better just explain away those weird Klingons and bring the real thing back. (Note, I've never seen an episode of Discovery).

I agree. I spend over a hundred $$$$ for DirectTV. That's just the basic package with two receivers.

There's no way in this world I'm paying a dime more for a streaming service.

Even the suggestion that I'm expected to hand over more hard earned money is offensive.

We pay far too much for television entertainment already. There's a limit how much I'm going to get gouged for what used to be completely free.

I do hope Patrick's revival of Picard is a success. He's my favorite captain in the Trek world.

Didn't Future Picard have some sort of brain disease ? Or was it a case of because he knew about this future development he was able to catch it early and he never got it?

I got the impression Picard's disease was incurable. Much like learning at age 45 that you'll have alzheimer's at 80. Nothing can be done. Life sucks sometimes.

That knowledge would be horrific to know in advance.

This is Trek and they'll retcon some bs explanation why Picard isn't senile.

Maybe they'll just insert him into each scene, surrounded by a pale blue glow.

...well she was a writer but it wasn't her show. There were plenty of problems with Discovery, including the early departure of the original show-runner and the eventual revelation that the replacement show-runners were a couple of bullies. When your boss threatens you to "stay quiet" then I would suggest to you that the writers room probably wasn't the most conducive of places to try and commit to "character and continuity." Which makes it all the more fantastic she is getting her own show.

Having said that I'm finding hit hard to lock-down any news reports that clearly state she is the showrunner though. Amy Berg mentions on twitter that she "is behind the creation of the new series", but everything I've seen list a creative team that includes James Duff of the Closer/Major Crimes which is fantastic, but Beyer is always listed last, so I'm not at all sure what is going on here. So maybe she made the pitch, maybe even getting Stewart onboard, but she might not be actual showrunner.

See, I was willing to pay. But then halfway through the season, they were like: "No more access to Big Bang Theory" And I'm like: "really guys? Fuck off!"

Apparently, "All Access" doesn't mean what CBS thinks it means.

More Captain Picard? Make it so!

https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/pa...cid=spartanntp

TNG had many flaws, but few would argue Patrick Stewart was one of the high points of the show.

Are you fired up?

"Darkness" doesn't bother me. In fact, I found it quite refreshing. It was numerous other aspects of the show that disappointed me.

Huh? The three worst SW films* are Epi 1, 2, 3, before Disney.

* and I honestly dont think they are terrible, but disappointing to many.

And honestly the last two ST films, the last ST TV show and the current one- are all pretty much "ruined".

Hopefully he won't die before CBS gets around to actually make the show.

I watch DISCOVERY and while it was so so, it takes so long before new "seasons" show up I completely lost interest and will likely not watch it.

More good news. A rep from CBS said their goal is to have a new Trek show running on all access year round. Including limited series and mini series. This could be awesome! Trek Anthology shows!

Some Info here.
