Barry on HBO

Anyone else watch this series? It stars Bill Hader (with strong supporting performances by Stephen Root and Henry Winkler) as a hit man who starts going to acting class.

I just got finished watching season 1 and, uh, holy shit this show is shockingly good. I started watching it because I like Bill Hader and thought it might be good for a laugh or two. I got...a lot more than that.

I won't post any spoilers in the first post here, just wondering if there's anyone else who watched this and enjoyed it. I did a search but didn't see a thread on it.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. Henry Winkler, Bill Hader & Stephen Root were all great and I loved the guy (I had to look up his name)- the "nice" Chechen gangster, Noho Hank. Hoping there is a season 2.

I really enjoyed it. One thing I was impressed by was the fact that each episode was only half an hour, but it seemed like a significant amount got accomplished in each episode without feeling rushed.

My only tiny criticism would be that I thought Bill Hader went just a smidgen too far in how bad Barry's acting was. But I guess that's just a matter of taste.

I thought it was slightly over the top, but only slightly. The actress who plays his girlfriend did an amazing job of that, though - I feel like there's a lot of skill involved in being an actress who's doing not only an excellent job of playing a somewhat shallow and self-centered woman in an acting class, but also portraying that woman's usually-subpar acting skills, complete with moments where she rises above her usual level to shine. (E.g. in the Macbeth scene in I think episode 7.)

I thought it was far better than it had any right to be, especially considering how terrible all the promotions were. I don't think I saw a single commercial that made me want to watch it, but I took a flyer on the strength of Stephen Root, Henry Winkler, and solid reviews.

Before Barry, I could take or leave Bill Hader, but this raised his stock a great deal in my book.

Have you ever watched "Documentary Now!"? That's the series that sold me on Bill Hader; I think I heard about "Barry" after checking his IMDb page or Wikipedia article.

I watched it and quite liked it. Particularly how Bill Hader actually came across credibly as a bad-ass. I would not have predicted that.

I watched the first season and thought it was well done. But I wouldn’t call it one of my favorite shows.

I loved it. It's tough to pull off a protaganist who does so many unequivocally terrible things, yet you still want to root for him.
After the events of the season finale, season 2 should be pretty wild. Can't wait!

Yes, I’ve been watching it and love it. Every episode is a gem. I can’t believe how much I love the Chenyan villains...

I generally don't "binge watch" but I finished this one over two days. I've always been a fan of Bill Hader but he's especially entertaining in this!

Definitely one of the funniest shows I've ever seen ... and the odd thing is, I rarely laugh out loud at it. Something happens, or someone says something, and I think to myself, "That was fucking hysterical!"

Maybe the fact that I'm watching it by myself has something to do with it?

Anyway, one of my favorites, and NoHo Hank is the best character on TV this year.

Yea, love this show. A mix of humor and great intensity. Agree with MsWhatsit, above. Barry's love interest, Sally Reed, played by Sarah Goldberg, plays a woman who is C- quality actress. Tricky, I'm sure.

Barry was just renewed for a 3rd season a few weeks ago and a recent show show(early May 2019) just broke their ratings records so this series is likely to be around a while.

I'm about one episode behind.

Did you guys see the "hit gone wrong" episode? "ronny/lily" is the title and I am not kidding, it is an all-time classic for comedy half-hour shows.

Everything goes completely wrong in Barry's hit, but does so in a hilariously crazy way. Bizarre, strange, no way to explain it.

An amazing episode. I find Barry to be a good show, but not quite as great as some people think. This one, though, was laugh-out-loud hilarious and kind of painful, too.

I loved the ronny/lily episode - I hope to see Jessie Giacomazzi again, perhaps in a something like Kill Bill. It was so unpredictable and surprising (was that a real frying pan or a prop?), like most of the episodes.

Yes, Documentary Now made me change my mind about Bill Hader, especially "Sandy Passage". I'm surprised no one has mentioned his 2018 Best Leading Actor Emmy for Barry; that should convince any skeptics.

"Oh. She's not human."

Gotta love Stephen Root. I've been watching this show since the beginning and it's definitely one of my favorites. To be fair, it would be hard to go wrong with Hader, Root and Fonz all in it together.

Stephen Root is too hilarious in this. It's becoming one of the most memorable roles for him.

If "ronny/lily" doesn't get every Emmy it's sure to be nominated for, I'll be extremely surprised.

This show keeps going from strength to strength. Before the second season began I heard Hader saying it's very dark, and that can mean a variety of things....so I was wondering if I'd still love it. Definitely still do.

That was one of the funniest things I've seen a long time.

I kept wondering why Ronny looked so familiar. The actor (Daniel Bernhardt) is probably best known as Agent Johnson (hmm, upgrades) from The Matrix Reloaded.

This is one of only two shows that I watch weekly. I enjoy it so much that I have accidentally invented reverse binging, or maybe anti-binging, to enhance my enjoyment.

When I sat down to watch the second episode of this season, the little potted summary of the previous episode made me realise that my memory of it was fairly vague. So I watched episode 1 before watching episode 2. And I have followed this practice every week since. The re-watch gives a whole different perspective partly from having seen Inside The Episode the week before. If I had my way it would be the law that every TV show have a segment, just as brief and informative, after the credits.

I couldn't imagine going back to "normal" watching, it would stunt my watching pleasure.

I saw that immediately after The Long Night episode of Game of Thrones and it was weirdly a release from the tension while also being tense in a different way.

I really like Sally, but I don't think she's shallow, exactly. A little self absorbed, but very sweet. She reminds me a lot of a former girlfriend, so I guess I have a soft spot for the character.

But for pure laughs on this show, it's NoHo Hank.

Laughable---and lucky. (In the season two finale.)

I have no idea how accurate Anthony Carrigan's Chechen accent is, but I do always "hear" the name of the show in his voice---BAH-ree!

Yeah, a good example was that fantastic monologue in the season finale during which she wondered aloud "am I the voice of a movement?"

I think she might be just a bit better than that, as we've seen demonstrated in the past couple episodes. This was an interesting conclusion to her profile in Vanity Fair:

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...sarah-goldberg
Quote:
The role can still surprise her. Goldberg did not anticipate that Sally would turn down the TV job: “I can’t imagine she’s having an easy time paying her rent. But then I thought, ‘O.K., I think this is where the evolution begins with her.’”

That plot point made the actress think about an incident several years ago, in which she turned down a role because it seemed like “soft porn.”

“I was going in for a casting director I really like, but the scene was like—‘she rides the horse bareback, she takes his cock in her hand,’” Goldberg recalled.

“I was like, ‘what the fuck is this?’” she said. “Anyway, it was Game of Thrones.”
