Here's some help in sorting your cards (depending on how many you have and whether it's worth your time to do so)

If it's black bordered and there's no expansion symbol (which will always be in the middle, righthand side) it's either Alpha or Beta. If it's white bordered and no expansion, it's either Unlimited, Revised or 4th. The UNL or Rev you can tell because there's no copyright symbol date on the bottom and they appear a bit faded or muted in color as compared to other cards.
Arabian Knights have a scimitar as an expansion symbol and Legends has a portion of a column as its symbol.

The key cards you're looking for, for the most part, have been listed. If you want to PM me, I can help give you an estimate of how many cards you have and what I'd be willing to pay for them.

I just looked through my boyfriend's cards. I knew he had at least 2 Demonic Tutors. Sadly, they're 3rd revised. I wonder what else he has in there. He definitely doesn't have as many as you guys though. I think he actually has more Star Trek cards than Magic cards. 52

Revised may be fine, but it's worth about $80 less apparently.

Actually I have no idea if he wants to get rid of his Magic cards. He really doesn't have a huge amount and we have more than enough storage space in this house so they're not in the way. I only remembered the Demonic Tutor because it was a card I always made sure I had in my deck. I just couldn't remember what color the border was.

The only thing of his that I'd sell without telling him first is the Transformers (he already said it's ok, except I can't sell Jetfire). 55

Sol Ring -- who would have thought? 56

Sol Ring is valuable for the same reason the Moxes and Lotus are. They provide more of a resource than they require to play. The cost of the Sol Ring isn't zero, and it's colorless mana, so it's less valuable than the others in play terms. The Sol Ring was also printed at uncommon and in more editions(mainly the Revised printing) so it isn't as valuable monetarially. But the principle holds and drives its value. c.f. Mana Vault, Mana Crypt.

Enderw24, at some point many years ago I ended up with a single green/red deck, the cards of which (excluding land, of course) have only been played about three times. There's nothing of value in it (example: after a quick glance, the most notable card I saw was Barbarian Ring...). Ogre thank you for your kind words. It's hard getting feedback of that sort around here because this message board isn't set up to register good trades and/or completed sales. Here's the deal though. I have 30,000 to 35,000 to get rid of. All commons/uncommons mixed from Revised through Zendikar.

Ah, it's a good thing you clarified it. Because Tinker wasn't in Urza's Saga, it was in Urza's Legacy. Another banned card from there was Memory Jar, which isn't worth very much at all. So I'd never have figured it out.

Anyway, an Academy in the condition you describe, I'd offer $10 for it. 66

Are they worth money? Yeah, a bit. Off the top of my head I couldn't say how much. Maybe 25-50 cents apiece. I could take them, but honestly, if all you have is a few of those cards to sell, I'd say your best bet is to take them down to a local gaming shop and see if they're interested. 77

I have no idea. I'd have to go home and count. I think right now I have around 20,000 at a guess. In the last month or two I've really slowed the accumulation and selling of cards. At a high I probably had around 35,000, which is still nothing compared to some crazy collectors out there. 86

Hey names Matt, Actually you would be better off purchasing two deck boxes! (usually ten dollars for a beginners deck target has um!) especially for a fair fun game and rule books. Magic is actually pretty complex and takes a good minute to go over. The organized rule books will have you up and playing a game in no time though. Starters usually include random cards so one person can attempt to make a deck customized by them personally, two decks is better for two people, and may even save you money! 91

Thought I'd bump this in case anyone is still subscribed. I used to play pretty heavily for a couple years in the early 90's. Mostly 3rd edition, but I have some betas of (what were then) low-end cards. Apparently even the low-end cards are worth something now.

Kind of frustrating. SOMEONE would want these, and I could use the money (my 6-year-old computer is on it's last legs, and I need to upgrade/repair), but I have no idea how to connect with a buyer. I live in Hooterville these days, and don't get out much due to illness, or I'd go to a tournament and make some contacts.

I have a beta Birds of Paradise that guides in the neighborhood of $1,000 mint. It's in played condition and no one REALLY goes by the guides, so I would let it go for far, far less, though still 3 figures.

Most are in played condition, as I was a player, not a collector. NONE are in what I would call bad or unplayable condition-no stains, rips, creases, or obvious wear that would distinguish it from other cards. Some are near-mint/mint - though not the betas.

Also in beta: Flashfires, Disintegrate x2, giant growth, shatter x2, earthbind x3, and a standard forest.

In Legends, I have a Chain Lightning, Lifeblood, and 4 Wolverine packs

3rd edition: Birds of paradise x2, mind twist x2, Sol Ring x2, various and sundry cards like Kird Apes, Serra Angels, Sengir Vampires, White Knights, Dragon Whelps, etc. No lands. I have more, but there's only about 120 MTG cards in total.

On the fun side, I have both halves of a B.F.M., Arena and Windseeker Centaur (both of which you could only get by buying MTG novels, AFAIK), an Equinox in Italian, and nine autographed cards by 3 different artists which I sent away to be signed.

Not a complete accounting, but should give you an idea. If I get interest, I'll send a complete list. I can scan important cards like the beta Birds and send a pic.

I have a Topps Traded Barry Bonds card from 1986, a Mario Lemuiex 1986 Topps, and a complete set of sportflics Upper Deck cards from the 1994 All-star game, which were only available at the Fan-Fest (limited to 10,000 sets). All kept in plastic cases/boxes. These could be had for anything that makes it worthwhile to go to the post office.

I have thousands of MTG cards sitting in a dry, safe place - about a thousand miles away from here. Can't get 'em right now though. Too much to ship, too far to drive. Gah! 95
