The Bodyguard was a relatively forgettable romance-suspense film, but everyone remembers Whitney's singing.

Mentioned above.

Chariots of Fire won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1982. I haven't seen it either but I don't consider that means it wasn't memorable.

(Making note to get Chariots of Fire out of the public library.)

Mentioned in a previous thread as examples of fairly execrable movies with very good soundtracks:

Heavy Metal
La Bamba

The movie box office was over $750 million, and not because of the soundtrack.

"Repo Man" doesn't count as it is both an excellent movie and excellent soundtrack.

I really enjoyed Stewart Copeland's soundtrack to "Rumble Fish", but to be honest I've never seen the movie so I can't say if it was any good or not.

Children of Sanchez -- the Chuck Mangione theme got lot of radio play, enough such that I bought the soundtrack--but I never have seen or heard any mention of the movie.

Well, an example of a movie making an existing song popular. The song may have existed 5 years prior to the movie, but the movie made it a "one hit wonder". The video for the song is full of clips from the movie, anyway.

I don't think the Cocktail soundtrack has been mentioned. I never saw the movie, but I had the cassette. Don't Worry Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin), Rave On (Mellencamp version), Hippy Hippy Shake (probably a cover but the Georgia Satellites version), Kokomo (Beach Boys).
