I’m thinking his actual surname starts with an N, but his pseudonym doesn’t. Unfortunately, the only 20th c. male British writer I can think of who wrote under a pseudonym is John Le Carre, but his real name doesn’t start with “N”; it’s is “Cornwall”.

Time's up! I am aeronautical engineer and novelist Nevil Shute Norway, better known as Nevil Shute, author of On the Beach, A Town Like Alice, and over twenty other books. I used the pseudonym to protect my engineering career from any negative publicity which might result from my novels.

Just to clear up my last set of IQs, right on Soupy Sales and Stephen Jay Gould. The greatest Jewish pitcher in major league history was Sandy Koufax, of the Dodgers.

IQ1: Did you head the Freedmen’s Bureau after the Civil War?

IQ2: Were you a writer of comic short stories, whose real name was W.S. Porter?

IQ3: Were you one of the leads in Gone With The Wind?
#1. Take a DQ.

Right on O. Henry and Olivia de Havilland. The head of the Freedman's Bureau was O.O. Howard. Stole this question from Elendil's Heir, above!.

IQ1: Did your sometimes-vitriolic rivalry with fellow paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope lead to the two of you discovering and describing dozens of species of dinosaurs?

IQ2: Were you the fat, mustached half of a comedy duo that originated in vaudeville, but became famous through film?

IQ3: Are you the Earl of Airlie? (Surname sufficient.)

DQ1: Real?
