NHL - September 2018

OK, I know it's preseason, but since a spammer bumped the previous April thread, I thought we should start conversing about the upcoming season.

The Karlsson situation in Ottawa is interesting, to say the least. Hoffman was shipped out of town, and it remains to be seen which one of the wives is delusional.

Technically from August, but Dmitry Orlov and the Stanley Cup being serenaded by flamethrowers should tide us over for a while.

Nate Schmidt has been suspended for 20 games after testing positive for PED.

20 Games. For such a tiny amount, it most likely came from some cold medicine or something like that.

How many games do guys get when they're arrested for domestic abuse, sexual assault, DUI, etc?

But hey, at least Schmidt stands for the anthem.

I can report from Philadelphia the hype for the Flyers is at an all time low. The Eagles won the Super Bowl, so the old "Eagles suck, drop the puck" joke doesn't work anymore because ALL anyone cares about are the Birds, with the Sixers second, and even the failing Phillies have a shot at the wild card. I THINK they made a free agent signing or two but like I said, with the other three sports dominating headlines, no one cares and I can't even tell you what they are, and I like hockey. There's more buzz about the soccer team than the Flyers right now. Even sadder, it will take a DEEP playoff run waaaaaay in April 2019 to get this town buzzing again.

Pacioretti is now a Golden Knight. I see the Taylor Hall thing, where a high-profile player moves from a fishbowl under a microscope to a city where he's completely anonymous and there's about six trillion tons less pressure, and performs awesomely. Had the hugest, dopey grin throughout a TimandSid interview today. I'll be surprised if he's not back to 30-goal form this season.

Considering the way Flyers fans behaved when they lost during the play-offs, I'm surprised. That was disgusting.

Last night the Humboldt Broncos played their first game of the season, and the first game since the bus crash.

The after game ceremony sure brought a tear to my eye.

Karlsson traded to the Sharks for garbage. Fuck this team, fuck Dorion and most of all, fuck Melnyk. I hope the team averages sub-10K attendance this year.

That Puts Karlsson in play for the off season, Should be fun to watch.(I hope at least, these days top players in their prime just don't go free agent, and the Off season is barely worth paying attention to anymore).

My crystal ball is often cloudy, but what the heck:

Now that the Blue Jackets have given coach John Tortorella a two-year contract extension (through 2020-21), I predict that this season they'll regress significantly, and he'll get fired before the end of 2019.

I'm hoping my Devils make a showing this year, but then I haven't really been paying attention that much the past few years. Maybe I'll make it a point to watch a few games. . .

Eugene Melnyk is just such a disaster. He plays the fool and thinks he plays the genius.

The Karlsson trade is bad and in retrospect the Matt Duchene trade is horrible, but worse is yet to come.

The Blackhawks have started practice, and while Corey Crawford is skating and doing drills, he's still not practicing with the team. He hasn't played since last December, the team stating that he's continued to suffer from an "upper body injury" which has never been further defined.

confirmed.

"Ken Holland announced that after consulting with Doctors, Henrik Zetterberg is no longer healthy enough to play professional hockey."

Honestly no one should be surprised. when they said he hadn't been able to train or practice at all during the off season, the writing was on the wall.

Don't worry, as the Sens will be in prime position to draft Jack Hughes after the season!

Make that the Avs will be in prime position to draft Jack Hughes after the season with the pick the Sens them for Duchesne!

Oh, well. Maybe Dorion can get a first rounder from someone when he unloads Stone and Duchesne (for a lot less than what he paid for him) at the deadline. And to think: a year ago the Sens' biggest concern was moving Ryan's albatross of a contract. Now, they will probably have to keep him around just so they can make the salary floor.

PS- Pageau out for six months with a torn Achilles, although there's been no indication that Matt Cooke was involved.

I'm not a Sens fan, but I've seen almost every player in the organization come up through Binghamton. It's kind of painful to watch an org self-destruct like this.

Austin Watson of the Preds just got 27 games for his involvement in a DV incident and Slava Voynov is still out on indefinite suspension after three years for his DV arrest and jail time.

Update: in a press conference today, Crawford acknowledged that he had suffered a concussion, and is still dealing with post-concussion effects.

Even if Ottawa finishes dead last, the chances of that pick being #1 is quite low -- something like 18.5% (thanks, Edmonton). Still, Colorado still got a great pick in exchange for a player Ottawa's going to have to unload for cents on the dollar by the deadlock.

I would like the record to show that I hated the trade from the moment it was made

Not sure what the latest is on Ottawa getting a new rink in LeBreton Flats.
I guess in order to avoid a "Purge"/"28 Days Later"-like revolt, hopefully soon!
It's possible Craig Anderson could set a record this season in facing shots.

Curious how Babcock will work Tavares in. There's bucketloads of young scoring talent on the Leafs, but their defense, though, is still a concern. Jake Gardiner is better in his zone than he used to be, but still a work in progress.

Well that's something like. I guess I'm' thinking of the NFL, where you get about four games for DUI, but suspended until the playoffs if they think you're doping.

Not surprising, but such a bummer. To compensate, I'm going to jump on the Filip Zadina bandwagon and say that he will most definitely be the best player to ever strap on skates.

Leafs and Senators exhibition game from small town Ontario tonight, and it's televised!

Tomorrow night they're in Ottawa, and I'm going. I haven't been this pumped for a Leafs season in 20 years.

Dumbest thing in the NHL is blacking out the preseason games on NHL.TV

I don’t watch a lot of preseason but it would be an way to grow interest in the upcoming season.

I’m in DC this week and I’m noticing a lot of people wearing Capitals Stanley Cup T-shirts. I always considered DC to be a transient town so it’s nice to see fans supporting their local team even if they jumped on the bandwagon

wasn't planning on it going that way, but I've managed to be at all three pre-season Wings games so far. Some musings:

- I don't see Kronwall playing a full season. His knee is clearly bothering him more and more, and he's not as sharp at the point.

- in all three games, you could tell you were watching players not used to playing with each other- and this was true for both teams. though I was surprised at how much ice time Kane and Toews had on Thursday, while Crosby didn't play Weds. and Larkin didn't skate yesterday.

- bright spot from yesterday is all of the scoring was from the new kids. Zadina, Cholowski, Saarijarvi, and Svechnikov.

- Givani Smith showed he can really hold his own in a fight, and has some offensive chops

- if Blashill wants a tougher team who is "hell" to play against, then hopefully guys like Sulak, McIlrath, and Smith make the cut. Sulak is a pretty tough defender who's a good skater too, and McIlrath delivered a few punishing hits last night.

If the Senators pile up 55 points this season I'll be kind of impressed in a sad way.

No team in major North American pro sports needs a new owner more.

If the Oilers continue their mediocre play in the first month management should fire the entire coaching staff.

I've always wanted the Flyers to have a mascot with a beard of Trumphair. Or resembling Vorachek's backwoods cousin.
Here he falls down on not one but two occasions, in the top video, and the gif just underneath.

Aaaa just throw some skates on the Fanatic.

Nurse just got back from injury. The Oilers will REALLY need him this season. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets about 28 minutes per game this season. Lucic has to pick it up. Interesting to keep an eye on Puljujarvi and Yamamoto. I'd hold off to the new year and assess management then. Unless, I spose, if they have only a handful of wins by late Nov./early December.

And Tom Wilson strikes yet again, this time on Oscar Sundqvist. He's going to have an in-person hearing on Wednesday.
Are the Caps ever going to stop defending this guy? Even Shero and Bylsma spoke publically about how unhappy they were with Matt Cooke and to his credit, he ended up making a change.
