That looks amazing! But I think it needs some more fire with all that ice.

I've been rewatching the entire series over the past month or so. It's an interesting feeling, each time a character is introduced on the show and everything you know about what will happen to them flashes through your mind. Especially the characters that have died. Sort of like having the gift of prophecy, I guess.

Anyway, I'm just up to Episode 1, Season 5, which starts with Cersei and her friend going to see Maggie the Frog, and she's given three questions.

Cersei says she is betrothed to 'the prince' and asks if she will marry him. Maggie says "No, you will marry the king."

Is she just making the point that Robert will have taken the throne before their marriage, or is there more to it? Was Cersei engaged to a different man entirely before Robert?

My thinking is, Robert was NEVER a prince. He was the Lord of some place -- just Dragonstone? or the Stormlands or whatever? But the other Lords of whatever haven't been referred to as princes*, and this is well before Robert's Rebellion is launched, right?

* Except for Doran, but I think that's because the status of Dorne is different than the other 'kingdoms' since they never formally bent the knee?

The only other Prince I recall being mentioned besides Robert's sons was Prince Rhagar. But Rhagar ended up married to Elia (maybe not at that point in the timeline, not sure of how Elia's age compared to Cersei's) and later to Lyanna, of course.

So, if Cersei was betrothed to Rhagar, what happened to break it off?

If not, what other prince was she betrothed to? And what happened to him?

It was Rhaegar she was referring to. While Cercei was never engaged to him, Tywin was the king's closest friend and Hand, so it was sort of assumed that the two of them would eventually marry. In fact, Rhaegar's later betrothal to Elia of Dorne, at the king's insistence, was one of the main causes of the estrangement between the two men.

Ah, very helpful! Thank you, Elendil's Heir and Alessan!

The sad thing is I have season 5 in front of me. Sansa's rape, Arya's endless training, and the Dorne road trip.

Also some good stuff, I'm sure, but I can't call it to mind right now.

Glad to help.

Eighteen actors were replaced on GOT. Some I knew about, some I didn't: http://whatculture.com/tv/game-of-th...eplaced?page=1

Yes, I preferred him, too. The new guy doesn't have nearly his quirky charm.

The new guy was basically a completely different character and a redundant one. Old Daario had his own agenda - he was dangerous, he betrayed his former allies. He thought the world of himself. When he tried to change Dany's mind or change her view of her other advisors, was he trying to do what was in his best interest, or was he trying to manuever himself into being king? He represented a dangerous unknown with interesting ways to take the character. He was a wild card. When he and Jorah conflicted, was it just Jorah's jealousy, or was he right, was Daario up to something? How would Dany be blinded in her decisions by her desire for the swaggering fuck machine? All sorts of room for draama.

Instead, New Daario was just another wise warrior poet devoted follower. A redundant role, since she already had Jorah and Barriston basically being the same thing to her. So he was basically just Jorah she could fuck. Not interesting at all.

The Daario switcheroo is one of the biggest, most inexplicable mistakes the show has made.

Regardless whose choice Skrein's departure was, the show clearly (inexplicably) chose to reconceive the character--unlike all those other recastings. They could have looked for an actor who bore a passing resemblance to Skrein in manner and visage, made him up to resemble more, had him study the original performance, and most importantly written him as a development from that original conception.

Yeah, so? C'mon George, finish what you started! I'll buy the books when six comes out; I'll have a reasonable expectation seven will come, then.

It really does seem like he's lost his taste for the series. Not Westros itself but this particular song of ice and fire.

That series is never getting finished. I give it 20% chance book 6 is ever published.

I'm more around 70% for Winds of Winter, but less than 10% that Martin writes A Song of Spring.

I like to pretend that it's taking so long because he's writing them both and will drop them both at the same time or 7 soon after 6. And I'm just going to pretend any time he's said no, that's not the case, that that is a lie.

Martin sold out for big money. He has other people finishing the story and he's getting paid a lot for it.

I just don't buy that Martin's motivated by money. He has so much already that he literally doesn't appear to know what to do with it all -- he bought the original Robby the Robot prop; he routinely buys property in Santa Fe and repurposes it for charity/museums/animal shelters; etc. I think he's what he appears to be -- an aging, very deliberate and increasingly slow writer who made some creative choices that he's having a very high degree of difficulty in untangling and resolving.

he could follow the route other authors took and hire a co author who actually writes the books based on his ideas. Arthur C. Clarke did that for the last 3 Rama books.

Yes, and look how they turned out. Better to have no GoT than crappy, ghost-written GoT. (In my universe the books and TV show are completely separate and distinct stories.)

He's probably looking forward to the prequel series that HBO is working on. That way he won't have to put up with people bitching and moaning about the changes made from the books since there are no books to compare to.

He's almost 70 and he is very out of shape , to put it nicely. So it's no surprising he works slowly and with the TV money flowing in he has no reason to hurry.

He’s obviously written himself into a corner in the books and I’m pretty sure he’s happy to let HBO finish it while he moves on to other projects.

His age and his weight don’t seem to be a significant factor if he writing other stuff.

He said a long time ago that he lost interest in this story. The tv show triggered a landslide of fan requests for the end of this tale (far and above those who read this series when it first came out) so he agreed to finish it off. It seems to me that he still likes Westros and has a few tales to tell about it but the story that inthralled HBO viewers isn't the one that inthralled him.

I do not see Martin palming this off to a ghost writer just to please his fans. My only hope is that he lives to be 105 so that he can finish this.

He’s already given it to a ghost writer—HBO. I think it’s reasonable to expect that that will be the only ending completed.

He could write more books that are shorter instead of sticking to 7, that way he could put them out quicker.

I don't think it's a question of 'sticking' to seven at all -- wasn't it supposed to be a trilogy when he started? Writers just have lengths that suit the way they write. Some do short stories, some can make their point in 200 pages, others need a wider canvas.

Though once you're famous, editors certainly stop trying to 'trim the fat.'

Or your publishing company (whom you've made oodles of dollars for) tell you, "Sure! Your wife can be your editor! No problem!"

(Not to disparage Harriet MacDougal, but an editor NEEDS an objectivity distance.)

Made a game of these last words with hubby. Look how Maester Aemon's words were a bit of fan service to the book readers.

I read somewhere that production has started on the spin-off. Did they ever say what the premise is?

It's supposed to be set about 10,000 years in the past during the "Age of Heroes".

No idea why they are going into unexplored territory instead of mining the deep and best of all already written history of Westeros. The show was at its best when it had Martin's writings to guide it, when it got into fan fiction territory the quality went downhill. This looks like its going straight to the fan fiction.

There's a wiki out there that tells how the wall was made.

Various reports says the filming of season 8 is done . I guess they have to move on to the CGI parts. Eventually HBO will announce when it returns but I suppose they are in no hurry to do that It seems they could put out clips now if they want.
