The Flash Season 6

The Flash returns for its sixth season on Tuesday at 8 ET. Hopefully this season will come out better than the last one, and they won't just keep letting the Big Bad go because of reasons. Word of God is that the season will be split into two halves (Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis?) each with their own Big Bad. Given the tag from last season, where the future newspaper ("Flash Missing - Vanishes in Crisis") in the Time Vault changed its date from 2024 to 2019, I expect the first half of the season to focus heavily on the coming Crisis. (See also Tom Cavanaugh's role below.)

Cast changes: No changes to the main cast. Tom Cavanagh will be playing a new version of Harrison Wells as well as Pariah. Sendhil Ramamurthy will have a recurring role as Ramsey Russo/Bloodwork, the Big Bad of the first half of season. Keynan Lonsdale will be coming back as Wally West/Kid Flash, at least for a few episodes.

S06E01: Into the Void

SEASON PREMIERE - While Barry and Iris deal with the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Nora, the team faces their greatest threat yet - one that threatens to destroy all of Central City. Meanwhile, Killer Frost has a brush with death that results in an unexpected new dynamic that will change her relationship with Caitlin forever.

Good. I've said multiple times they need to adopt the "pod" model that Agents of SHIELD used. 20+ episodes is just too much for one big bad.

Cisco is not only still around but also, going by the trailers, bringing his girlfriend with him into the Cortex.

Cisco's best pop culture reference ever. Beats his Dreamscape reference from season 1 or 2.

DIIIIVE!!!

I thought the beginning was pretty low-key, what with them mourning the loss of Nora, but things ramped up really, really quickly. Barry has traded saving the city from an apocalyptic vortex at the end of the season to saving it at the start of the season. Plus the Monitor showed up to warn? inform? Barry of what's going to happen in the coming Crisis. But why didn't he show up on Earth-38 to warn Kara? And no mention of the deal Oliver made.

Some nice little touches: Joe and Iris wearing similar hats at the backyard barbecue. Ralph spending the summer looking for Sue. Ralph's interactions with Caitlin and Killer Frost. Killer Frost's new suit.

I'm getting the feeling that this show is spinning its wheels until the Crisis happens. Especially as all the Crisis-related stuff seems to be happening over in Arrow. The Monitor did show up last week, but only to warn Barry about the Crisis. He then disappears to apparently do stuff with Oliver. [LaMonica Garrett was listed in the credits last week, not as a guest star but as part of the main cast. He wasn't included this week, but was credited on Arrow, again as a main cast member of that show.]

After Barry finds out about the fate of the multiverse, and his own fate, I was afraid we were going to get angsty Allen again. But then CAPTAIN Joe West shows up to give him a pep talk and makes everything better again. But Barry was pretty much out of it for most of the episode. Fortunately the B- and C-plots were a lot more interesting than usual. Great to see Team Flash having lives that don't necessarily revolve around S.T.A.R. Labs and being in Team Flash. Also great to see Iris slowly assembling her own team of journalists. Maybe after the Crisis and the Earths merge she can hire Kara.

Re: Crisis (potential spoiler for those who know only the TV series)
SPOILER:
While I know that it was the result of Crisis on Infinite Earths in comic form, is it confirmed they are merging Earths?

You make a good point. I just assumed things would play out similarly to the comics, but maybe the TV version will be different. I've actually made a separate thread for the crossover. Maybe we could continue discussion there: Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Lot of different threads being teased in these first couple episodes. So far we've got:
-The Crisis
-Evil? Mohinder
-Weird Godspeed bots/clones/zombies from the future
-Secret meta capturing organization

So Barry reprimands Killer Frost for throwing the Romero zombie out the window, but then later stuffs him so full of dark matter that he explodes. What happened to trying to save him?

There's also Ralph's search for the love of his life, Killer Frost's journey to get a life, Iris setting up the Central City Citizen, and now the new Harrison Wells. I've been complaining about the sheer number of plot threads that Supergirl has, but somehow it doesn't seem as bad on this show. Perhaps the because the writers have done a better job of integrating the plots. Like how Iris's new cub reporter led her and Cisco to cross paths with the new Wells. And Killer Frost's plotline intersected with both Bloodwork and Barry's realization that he has to tell Team Flash about what happens in the Crisis.

Was it ever explained why they refer to the speedster clones as "Godspeed"?

Because they have the same uniform as Nora's nemesis in the future. When he was first introduced, he called himself the "God of Speed".

Did Frost blast Romero out of the window before or after determining he was already dead? That may be why they were willing to use terminal force on him later.

Did I miss anyone mentioning Ms. Dibny's boyfriend, Marv (Wolfman) (George) Perez?

ETA: He's still Mohinder in my household also.

I don't think there's any doubt that Dr. Suresh is evil now. Turning cancer patients into zombies, only for them to dissolve into black goo. Team Flash surmised correctly that Mohinder was using them as incubators to produce said goo. If they were smart they'd realize that he'd be back to collect his harvest, but I didn't see them gathering any of it up to potentially lure him into a trap.

More than half the episode was spent on various members of Team Flash trying to come to terms with impending Barry's demise. There as even a Last Supper-like vignette. While Cisco was angry and Ralph was sulky (and Frost was frosty), I thought Joe was taking the news rather well. Then came the waterworks at the end of the episode. Good God, it hit me right in the feels. Jesse L. Martin is a treasure.

"Nash" Wells going down into the sewer. Is he after crocodiles? Gorillas? Turtles? No, it turns out he's after the Monitor. Is he working for the Anti-Monitor? Is he Pariah? I guess we'll see in six weeks or less.

Kind of a filler episode tonight. Barry and Iris go off on vacation (so Grant Gustin can go shoot the crossover?) leaving Cisco to hold down the fort. A lot of good Cisco moments, seemingly unrelated to either the Crisis or Mohinder, that still managed to advance to latter two plots. Are they setting him up to get his Vibe powers back, now that we know breach psychosis is a thing?

Gypsy was chasing after Echo, as in Reverb, as in Vibe, so I thought it was pretty transparent who the killer was. Those breach cops from Earth-19 don't do their job very well, do they? Too bad about Gypsy - killed off screen. I guess they need an excuse for her not to appear in the Crisis.

This episode seemed to be showing us that Team Flash could function without the Flash. Cisco had an inter-dimensional adventure, even though he doesn't have any powers. Frost/Caitlin had a run-in with the Big Bad. Joe got to meet with the new "Nash" Wells. The writers are really setting us up there, aren't they?

You have a best friend, who you love (because he does have some good qualities), but who makes consistently horrible decisions. Dependably awful. And you decide to make a machine that "thinks like him" so that you can follow his bad advice even when he's not around.
Thereby proving that you, too, should not be in charge of decision making.

Also, his favorite thing that his wife makes him for breakfast is “a banana”.

Wait, what?

To be fair, Barry did correctly predict that Cisco would give up on B.A.R.I. He knows himself quite well.

Speaking of Cisco giving up on stuff, I wanted to make sure: he could’ve just kept his powers while still showing up for work at Team Flash, right? Or he could’ve given up his powers while quitting the ‘hero’ business? Or he could’ve kept the powers while quitting the ‘hero’ business?

But he instead ditched the powers and — kept doing his old job, working alongside his superhero teammates and opposing superpowered villains?

Who is that helping?

At least in this episode Barry's decisions were not awful. Cisco's decisions were fair - but Joe's were really bad (going on secret spying missions without telling anyone where you are or what you're up to - classic Team Flash blundering).

Truth.

Except, you know, having Cisco being able to Portal out of anywhere, or into anywhere, is just too plot-convenient, and resolves stories too easily. The Cisco portal-buttons he made are equally as bad, but since they are devices, they can't be everywhere at once like Cisco could.

Portals would also make Crisis too easy to solve for Barry.

I feel like they could have set it up better by making him lose control of his "Dead Zone" power. So he's constantly having visions to the point where he can't function normally.

And, of course, in the absence of that, he’s now, what, the guy who finds himself dazedly wandering around with something sharp and no alibi for whatever the heck just happened while he was incapable of functioning normally?

(Oh, and how great was his girlfriend’s response when he asked her to put that item far, far away from where he’ll be sleepwalking? Gingerly places it on the little table next to the bed? Right by the pillow? Saves time, I guess.)

I really like the Flash's new suit. They've moved away from the horrible leather of the early seasons. Great texturing, much more form-fitting. Plus the earpieces better reflect the comic versions.

A bit of a quieter, more character-driven episode. I'm glad they're moving away from the villain-of-the week format and explictly showing us what's happening to antagonists from previous episodes. Chester was introduced in S06E01 "Into the Void"; apparently he's been on ice in S.T.A.R. Labs this whole time. Allegra and her cousin Esperanza/Ultraviolet were introduced in S06E02 "A Flash of the Lightning".

"Nash" Bridges claims the Monitor is a fraud and wants to take him down. Could he actually be the Anti-Monitor? Also, that look "Nash" gave Allegra at the end. Does she remind him of Jesse? What happened to Jesse and Harry on Earth-2 anyway?

Were Barry's visions really generated by Bloodwork or were they just a manifestation of Barry's own doubt and fear and guilt? If the former, then I don't think Mohinder fully grasps the awful, terrible scale of the Crisis. What use being able to resurrect dead people when the entire universe has been annihilated by anti-matter?

Bloodwork's dinner scene was truly demented. I guess that's as much of a Thanksgiving we're going to have this season. When Barry went full Reverse Flash on his mother - or rather the Speedforce in the guise of his mother - I knew that he had lost. Good job by Iris on immediately picking up that Barry had been taken over by Bloodwork.

This episode takes place two days before Crisis. Since, for all Barry and Iris know, the Flash is going to vanish then they're going to have to get busy if they're going to make a little Nora.

I realize that I do not have a Pulitzer like Kara Danvers, but don't you usually wait until an event has happened before you write the story?
Or is that just silly Earth-? thinking?

I think Iris is writing the article more like an obituary, the bulk of which are in fact written in advance of their subjects' demise and only updated when required. It also gives us, the viewing audience, the opportunity to know what Iris since the cliffhanger for the Crisis, before it breaks for the winter, is guaranteed to be the Flash disappearing, i.e.,"FLASH MISSING - VANISHES IN CRISIS".

I wonder if they'll use Barry's zombification to rules-lawyer his continued existence if/as the story goes forward. Something like he "technically" died when he was taken over, but something in the experience was integral to averting the Crisis. Then he "gets better" and after a convenient absence to process the trauma, he's back to business as usual.

1) A few episodes back, there was some plot line about how there was a dark matter McGuffin that could protect Barry from antimatter annihilation, so perhaps non-Mohinder has a notion that his power-set combined with Barry could do the same for the whole universe

2) Yeah - great stuff there. Reminiscent of when ST:TNG went for the horror-tropes.

3) She won't be the same anyway, since she'll have had a father who disappeared 5 years earlier than the father of the Nora who came back in time last season.

Cisco took a page out of Star Trek by pulling magic tech out of his butt. In the previous episode, Velocity-X. In this episode, a force field around S.T.A.R. Labs and a photon gun to work against Bloodwork. Isn't the last just called a flashlight? Its destruction at least gave Allegra a chance to shine.

I thought at first that the villain was being as stupid as the heroes. Why let Team Flash go without infecting them? It turned out that Ramsey was being stupid but in another way and for once Barry was being smart. Working against Bloodwork from the inside and then dropping hints to Team Flash about what he was doing was probably the smartest thing Barry's ever done. So now Bloodwork is locked up in the chamber that used to contain Chester and sent off to A.R.G.U.S. courtesy of Lyla. She must have found some time while working on Lian Yu.

We've had a chance to see Frost change into Caitlin and back again several times. Caitlin seems physically smaller than Frost, even though only differences are a wig and a makeup job. I'll put it down to good acting by Danielle Panabaker.

Nash Wells has finally broken though to the Monitor's inner sanctum. What do those seven symbols mean? Seven paragons?

See you in the Crisis!

The Flash returns Feb. 4

Legends of Tomorrow will be premiering tonight, after Arrow. Next week is the Arrow series finale, which will be followed by some sort of series retrospective. So the Scarlet Speedster won't be coming back until February 4.

How about that cameo, huh?

New Earth, new opening titles. Also new Jitters. The common criminals are still pretty stupid though. Why would you do a simple holdup, on a coffee shop no less, when you know the Flash is running around protecting the city?

I was hoping to get more information about the new post-Crisis Earth Prime, but it's nothing we couldn't already figure out in the context of other shows. Cisco was kind enough to draw map though. Star City and National City are on the West Coast. Metropolis and Freeland are on the East Coast. Gotham City is on the Great Lakes. The map didn't show Central City for some reason, but presumably it's in the middle of everything. They are also unaware of the new multiverse. As far as they know, there's only one, integrated universe.

Cisco also figured out that new metavillains are running around, formerly of the old multiverse, and there could be new copies of previously encountered metavillains. Case in point was the meta assassin Kimiyo Hoshi, the new Doctor Light, who is different from the previous Doctor Light who was an Earth-2 doppelganger of Barry's old girlfriend Linda Park. In the comics, Kimiyo Hoshi first appeared as Doctor Light in Crisis on Infinite Earths who defended Superman as they battled the Anti-Monitor in the antimatter universe. She was there to witness the death of Supergirl. She's also different from the villainous male Doctor Light (a version of whom appeared on Titans).

We also appear to be getting a new Mirror Master, Eva McCulloch (rather than Evan McColloch in the comics), different than the Sam Scudder version that previously appeared.

It was great to see Team Citizen out and about, investigating important matters. I think they've done more reporterly things this half season than Kara ever did in all her previous seasons. Great sequence with Iris putting together all the clues. But she probably shouldn't go sneaking off to do some investigating without at least informing someone where she's going.
