Crazy idiot derails train in LA for crazy idiot conspiracy "reasons"

Seriously: Feds: Man intentionally derailed LA train near hospital ship

Quote:
A train engineer intentionally drove a speeding locomotive off a track at the Port of Los Angeles because he was suspicious about the presence of a Navy hospital ship docked there amid the coronovirus crisis, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

The locomotive crashed through a series of barriers and fences before coming to rest more than 250 yards (230 meters) from the U.S. Navy Hospital Ship Mercy on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a release.

Nobody was hurt.

Eduardo Moreno, 44, was charged with one count of train wrecking, prosecutors said. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney.
"Oh sure, Bo; that does seem crazy!" you're thinking.

I haven't gotten to the crazy part yet:
Quote:
Moreno acknowledged in two separate interviews with law enforcement that he intentionally derailed and crashed the train near the Mercy, according to the criminal complaint.

“You only get this chance once. The whole world is watching. I had to,” Moreno told investigators, according to the complaint. “People don’t know what’s going on here. Now they will.”

Moreno said he was suspicious of the Mercy and believed it had an alternate purpose related to COVID-19 or a government takeover, an affidavit states. Moreno stated that he acted alone and had not pre-planned the attempted attack.

In an interview with FBI agents, Moreno stated that “he did it out of the desire to ‘wake people up,’” according to an affidavit.

“Moreno stated that he thought that the USNS Mercy was suspicious and did not believe ‘the ship is what they say it’s for,’” the complaint said.

So that's the crazy part. Here's the idiotic part:
Quote:
Phillip Sanfield, spokesman for the Port of Los Angeles, said the locomotive never came close to the Mercy.

“It would have had to have gone several hundred yards through a parking lot and cross a water channel to reach the ship,” Sanfield said. “ The tracks are nowhere near the Mercy.”

Thanks Fox News, Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, Bill O'reilly, Laura Ingraham, the 3%-ers, the Bundy clan and everyone else who celebrates ignorance and spreads misinformation, suspicion and hatred!

Eduardo, my friend, that's something to behold right there.

I imagine the judge who first calls his name for a plea. "Mr. Moreno, you have been charged with... Train Wrecking? What is this the 18 fucking 30s?"

Yes, as charges you can have against you go, that has to be one of the most bad-ass.

That would be Putin. They don’t even have to scrap the signs; they can just print “utin” stickers to cover up the “ence”. The trick is just convincing Evangelicals that Putin is name-checked somewhere in Revelations...

They don't just celebrate it. Once they realized how many idiots like this there are, they built an entire ecosystem upon them, (and have been cashing in on it, too). All Trump had to do was walk in and pull the switch.

This act of stupidity was so ineffectual and moronic that it took a whole day for anyone to realize that it was deliberate. He had to tell them what he was trying to do so that they would even know he was committing a crime.

I realized that about 10 minutes into a phone conversation. I've been fielding a lot of calls this evening from friends, co-workers and union brothers & sisters; we're all checking up on each other and checking in.

Mea culpa; no idea why I heard that in Geddy's voice.

Let's face it - doing that stunt on April 1 is a sure-fire way to get people to dismiss it as a prank story.

Yeah the guy is nuts. But... What? What was he trying to accomplish? What is his message? What is the conspiracy that he thinks he was exposing?

He was suspicious about the Hospital ship Mercy? Um... OK. Suspicious of what?

In a word - Huh?

Maybe he was perplexed by the letters USNS in front of the ship's name. Now me, I just see a large white ship with a great big red cross on it and I automatically think...well, something very far off of what caused that idiot to blow his stack.

It kind of reminds me of what a lot of us did as kids. We'd build ramps and try to launch our bikes off them, with predictably understated results.

Difference is, most of us learned from that experience before we hit puberty.

I think that everyone who gets charged with a crime where it is at all relevant should have "creating a public nuisance" added to the charges, just in case the group W guys are a bit leery of what you are in for.

And I think in this case it would be a valid charge for Eduardo (assuming that that offense is on the books in California).

This video gives a clear view of how far he got to the hospital ship. Skip to 0:50 to see the wide view showing the position relative to the ship.

No clue. But it struck me as the kind of thing you might see in a thriller movie, where Our Hero has to has to do something dramatic to get people's attention.

And it sounded to me like this guy, under the influence of some mental illness or delusion, thought he was in that kind of a situation somehow.

So this appears to be the spot. He managed to get the locomotive 300 feet past the end of the line. That's pretty impressive, but he still had another 900 feet to go before he could have hoped to make contact with the ship.

That engineer must have been a fan of the movie Silver Streak.

In all seriousness, though, it's fortunate he didn't take out one of the supports of that freeway overpass.

Are we really sure this wasn’t just a publicity stunt by Steven Seagal to get funding to film the spec script for Under Siege 3 that he’s been floating around since 2016 where he has to fight terrorists on a train that crashed into a ship?

"Train wreckin' " not only is a crime, it's a federal crime.

18 U.S. Code § 1992. Terrorist attacks and other violence against railroad carriers

—Whoever, in a circumstance described in subsection (c), knowingly and without lawful authority or permission
(1) wrecks, derails, sets fire to, or disables railroad on-track equipment or a mass transportation vehicle;

So...

So when you put pennies on the track, thinking they might derail the train, and your father grounds you, and you cry "DAD! Why are you making a Federal case out of this?", it actually is!

Imagine a speeding train leaping over a stretch of water and slamming into a huge ship. All subsequent cars disappearing into the same hole. The stuff of legend.
