Interesting - Canes go up 2-1 on the Bruins.

At the start of the series I called the Canes in 6 - shoulda actually posted it here.

Who knows? Do they do it for everyone, or just certain areas? I can understand if Dallas residents get first pick, but at one point (I don't know if they still do it), Washington wouldn't sell to anyone from Western PA. When he got called out, Ted Leonsis basically said, "fuck off, I'll do it anyways." (Well, not quite)

I think you mean Blue Jackets. Though the Canes are up 2-0 on the Islanders.

Yeah, wow. That's the surprise of the second round so far. I would have figured that series to be a slog that goes to at least six. Shows what I know, at least so far. At this point, I'd be surprised if it goes to five.

And wow, pretty convincing win by the Stars tonight. Montgomery looks something like a genius for shaking up the front lines. I don't know where his instincts come from, and I'm surprised by them often, but they appear to be correct.

Can Carolina keep it up with all the injuries they've been seeing, tho?

And yeah, Dallas looked great tonight!

We got Svetchnikov and Martinook back last night, and Mrazek and Ferland might play Friday.

I wondered about all the injuries, but they did all right.

I think I have a little crush on Justin Williams.

Hall of famer Red Kelly dead at 91. I don't think I ever saw him play, but he did coach the Leafs for a bit in the late 70s or early 80s.

From Wikipedia, Red Kelly played on more Stanley Cup winning teams (eight) than any player who never played for the Montreal Canadiens, and is the only player to have never played for the Canadiens to be part of two of the nine dynasties* recognized by the National Hockey League (NHL) in its history.

* - the nine dynasties are:
1919-1927 Ottawa Senators: 4 Stanley Cups
1946-1951 Toronto Maple Leafs: 4 Stanley Cups
1949-1955 Detroit Red Wings: 4 Stanley Cups ++
1955-1960 Montreal Canadiens: 5 Stanley Cups
1962-1967 Toronto Maple Leafs: 4 Stanley Cups ++
1964-1969 Montreal Canadiens: 4 Stanley Cups
1975-1979 Montreal Canadiens: 4 Stanley Cups
1980-1984 New York Islanders: 4 Stanley Cups
1983-1990 Edmonton Oilers: 5 Stanley Cups

++ - Red Kelly was a part of these dynasties

Very impressive. R.I.P., Red Kelly.

An article I saw said he played defense for Detroit and switched to center with Toronto.

Cool.

Perhaps similarly, in the old days of the NFL it wasn't uncommon to play both ways. There was one season where Sam Baugh (known mostly as a QB) threw the most TD passes, intercepted the most passes as a DB, and had the highest punting yardage. I think that was in the 1940s. "Slingin' Sammy" Baugh played for the Redskins.

Carolina sweeps the Islanders and heads to the conference finals. I'm hoping that all 4 wild cards make it to the conference finals.

Condolences to RitterSport.

What about Tuukka Rask for Boston last night? He was amazing.

Hoping for a Hurricanes - Bruins series. And that all the injured Hurricanes are recovered by then. Rask vs Mrzak.

I couldn't even watch the third period. How embarrassing! I was all in for Trotz to get the Jack Adams trophy, but now I'm thinking the Blues coach will probably get it. Definitely not the Lightning coach!

So, the Islanders have now joined two exclusive clubs in the NHL -- one of only 4 teams to come back from a 3-0 deficit and one of only 4 (maybe 5?) teams to sweep in the first round and get swept in the second round. Yay.

I'll root for whoever makes it out of the eastern conference, I guess. Carolina vs Blue Jackets in the Conference Finals would practically put the NHL out of business, though.

Except for one small brain fart, Bishop was outstanding last night. The Stars got goals from 2 guys who don't score too often and that was enough. I think they are in a good position to close out the series tomorrow. Of course, I wouldn't be too surprised if it does go to game 7.

Is it just me or if you put a mustache on Berube wouldn't he look a lot like Quenneville?

Bishop was down, obviously injured and in terrible pain, and they kept on playing!?! I've watched explanations of the rule that allowed it, but it seems terribly unfair to me. Goals 3 and 4 never should have happened.

Goal 3, maybe. Although I have seen play continue when other players are down, so why not a goalie? No reason not to allow goal 4 though, that was Bishop's (or the coach's) decision to stay in the game. As it is, those two goals didn't matter anyway, and it's back to St Louis for game 7.

My gripe is, quit showing that damn replay over and over! It's hard enough watching it the first time, don't keep showing it!

Skaters different from goalie. Goalie injury is an empty net situation the team did not choose.

Goal 4 shouldn't have happened, because Bishop should have been pulled. People in pain and shock can't make reasonable decisions.

But, oh, well, an exciting game seven.

Yeah, my though immediately was "Why are you staying out there? You were prone on the ice a second ago, there's no way you're in top form, hit the bench!"

However, goal 3 was real. We still need to touch the puck to stop play. As was already observed, the series was headed back to St. Louis, anyway at that point.

Either way, I'm stoked we got this far through the two teams we faced, and game 7s rule! If we get to play in the western conference final, it'd be that much better.

I was at the game, and I can tell you it was exciting down to the very last second. The Sharks had a one goal lead, the Avalanche had an empty net. In the last 30 seconds or so they made a lot of attempts to score.

Lucky! Sounds like very tense moments during the game. This was the only playoff game I did not watch because we were away for the weekend. Otherwise I’ve watched them all. I don’t have tickets but am tempted to go!

And sympathies to the Blue Jackets, and congratulations for a great season.

I was very torn by the Boston/Columbus series. My best friend is from Ohio and a big BJs fan. I have been a fan of Tuukka Rask and Patrice Beregeron for a long time. Just can't root against Tuukka. Now, if it ends up Boston/Dallas I will probably find myself able to root against Tuukka.

My best friend is from C'bus but has lived in Boston since before the CBJs existed so she has little connection with that team. But she was home in C'bus for game 5 and was rooting them on during the CBJ comeback.

So, on to Carolina. Unfortunately the Celtics don't look like they'll advance so our chance to win all 4 major championships in one year is slipping away.

Edmonton names Ken Holland as GM, president of hockey ops.
Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers hired longtime Detroit Red Wings executive Ken Holland as their new general manager and president of hockey operations Tuesday.

Holland takes over the struggling team from interim GM Keith Gretzky and one of his first tasks will be finding a new coach. Veteran Ken Hitchcock will not be back next season after taking over in November for the fired Todd McLellan.

Edmonton has made the playoffs just once since advancing to the Stanley Cup Final in 2006, and the Oilers hope Holland is the GM who can finally build a contender around superstar captain Connor McDavid.
