At the Armistice memorial luncheon, the French redid the seating arrangements at the last minute so that Trump and Putin couldn't sit together.

But he and Melania Trump skipped a planned visit to the Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, an American cemetery home to more than 2,000 graves of service members killed in nearby battles, because of “scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather,” the White House said Saturday. Chief of Staff John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford were to attend in the president and first lady’s absences.
So how the hell did they manage to get there?

Soames is a sleazemonster in his own right* but compared to Trump he's a model of class and refinement, and no one can doubt his patriotism. He's scored a palpable hit on this one.

By the way, it is possible that it wasn't rain Trump was afraid of encountering.

Either of my grandfathers would have had the cojones to walk that walk, even on the day before he died.

I mean, you're talking about a guy who broke his neck falling on the concrete bleachers of a soccer field in his mid-70s, had the presence of mind to tell people "don't touch me! don't try to lift me up, I heard a crack I don't like at all, call an ambulance!" and who two weeks later was told "I know these two XRays are yours because I took both of them, but damn me if today's doesn't look like an old wound. Are you sure you're human?"
And a guy who, upon being told "I have bad news; with these blood pressure readings (10 over 5, using US units), you're clinically dead" answered "guess that explains why I've been feeling kind of under the weather then!"

Those two didn't have no bone spurs.

In North Korea, Missile Bases Suggest a Great Deception
Quote:
WASHINGTON — North Korea is moving ahead with its ballistic missile program at 16 hidden bases that have been identified in new commercial satellite images, a network long known to American intelligence agencies but left undiscussed as President Trump claims to have neutralized the North’s nuclear threat.

The satellite images suggest that the North has been engaged in a great deception: It has offered to dismantle a major launching site — a step it began, then halted — while continuing to make improvements at more than a dozen others that would bolster launches of conventional and nuclear warheads.

The existence of the ballistic missile bases, which North Korea has never acknowledged, contradicts Mr. Trump’s assertion that his landmark diplomacy is leading to the elimination of a nuclear and missile program that the North had warned could devastate the United States.
...
"Great deception"?? "Contradicts Mr. Trump's assertion"??

Wait. Weren't there Trump supporters who were saying he should get the Nobel Peace Prize because of his masterful diplomacy in neutralizing the North Korean nuclear threat?

Surely a great negotiator like Trump didn't get played by a Third World dictator. I mean, he has the best brain and knows more about everything than anybody. Just ask him.

Hm. Reports I read said it was today and he declined. Other reports say no, it was yesterday, when he was flying back. So I'll withdraw that one complaint.

The story I saw said yesterday. The problem is that Trump does so much completely outrageous stupid shit, that we are ready to believe anything. It is not because we are so partisan. It is because he says and does unbelievably stupid stuff constantly.

ETA I would like to than you for your diligent news posting. I know others have thanked you in the past, but here's another poster that is grateful.

After reports confirmed that the president had skipped a ceremony at the Aisle-Marne American Cemetery on Saturday due to the rain, Monday's travel lid from the White House revealed Trump would also be skipping a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

While millions of Americans observed Veteran's Day over the weekend, President Trump vouched for shelter from the rain and attacks against Democrats on Twitter from his golf club in New Jersey.

It is an unofficial tradition for the president to visit the Virginian cemetery on Veteran's Day, but this year, Trump had other worries at hand. Early Monday morning, the White House announced to the press that the president would not make any more public appearances today.

I don't think republicans care at all that he played golf - at least he played a white sport like golf and not a sport for minorities like basketball or a sport for foreigners like soccer. It's not that important to repubs because everyone knows they love the military and democrats hate it.

Aside from cries of "fake news!" whenever presented with evidence of Trump being an awful person or president? No.

Even by Trump standards, this was an incredibly stupid move. Trump's military credentials are already shaky and that's a subject his base cares about. Hell, it's a subject Trump himself has pumped up to use against other people.

Trump Decides Not To Leave WH To Visit Arlington Cemetery On Veteran’s Day
Quote:
According to Washington Post White House reporter Josh Dawsey, President Donald Trump put a “lid” on all activity at 10 AM and thus will not be leaving the White House to visit Arlington National Cemetery on Veteran’s Day.

A lid at 10 AM. Trump will have no movements today, per White House.

— Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) November 12, 2018

....
"No movements"? I guess that means no tweets from the bathroom, eh?

Trump is preparing to remove Kirstjen Nielsen as Homeland Security secretary, aides say.
Quote:
President Trump has told advisers he has decided to remove Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and her departure from the administration is likely to occur in the coming weeks, if not sooner, according to five current and former White House officials.
Trump canceled a planned trip with Nielsen this week to visit U.S. troops at the border in South Texas and told aides over the weekend he wants her out as soon as possible, these officials said. The president has grumbled for months about what he views as Nielsen’s lackluster performance on immigration enforcement and is believed to be looking for a replacement who will implement his policy ideas with more alacrity.

This might mean that he intends to get filthy on matters of immigration. Stephen Miller and John Bolton win; John Kelly and his understudy lose. I wonder how much more of this Kelly can take. I kinda suspect that pushing Nielsen out the door is as much about pushing Kelly out as it is Nielsen.

Soon we'll have a White House of wolves. If you're going to assault the Constitution and democracy, you don't want people standing in your way. You don't want lawyers and patriotic duty-bound ex-military resisting your impulses. You want ideologues and crackpots enabling you. This is where we're headed. And it's about to get fucking nasty.

Nielsen and Kelly are not moderates. They just know not to wear their hoods in public.

The rumor I see going around is Nielsen and Mattis out, Graham in at DOD and Cotton in at DHS.

Kelly, as far as I’m concerned, can go fuck himself. He showed his true colors early and often (remember the comment about the press when he was holding a sword?), and isn’t about to get a redemption ticket from me. The only unsullied members of this administration are Mattis and Dunford.

List of Medal of Freedom awardees announced today. Bunch of dead people (cause they can’t turn him down) and a GOP megadonor. I guess if I’d given $100 million to the GOP I’d be expecting an award too. I can’t wait to hear what he highlights as her achievements that will put her on par with other recipients.

On the current front page of foxnews is an image and the words "Noticeably Absent" with the headline of "Trump, Pence miss Veterans Day observance at Arlington Cemetery" --
Here is the story I was remembering - Obama skips Arlington to go to a different national cemetery on Memorial Day, and got crucified for it (Biden did Arlington that year).

I think Mattis is definitely out. Mattis isn't going to be on board with plans to hyper-politicize the military, and I think that's what's on tap next. I acknowledge that I have no evidence to support it at the present time, but the logic is that if you're done with democracy, which I think the Trumpists are, then you load the institutions with ideologues. Replace independent and objective judges with ideologues. Replace prosecutors, federal police, and the military generals with ideologues and loyalists. That way, if democracy votes against the conservatives in 2020, they'll have people in power who have less respect for constitutional norms like the peaceful transition of power. As we get closer to the election and as the possible outcomes come into clearer focus, I would also watch more carefully to see what happens to electors in right-leaning or "purple" states. I don't put it past the conservatives to tinker with the electors.

Well, if his AG choice wasn't Exhibit A of that, I don't know what could be. Matt Whitaker is a ridiculous choice in terms of qualifications and suitability for the role, but a fanatic Trumpist.

The fact that Trump has already partially disavowed Whitaker, claiming he doesn't know him when in fact he knows him quite well, perhaps suggests Whitaker is not long for the role, but it's an example of the kind of Trumpist who's going to get all the appointments from now on.

Not for an instant do I think Trump's attitude towards military appointments would be any different.
