We have had several SDMB poster online portrait scrapbooks in the past, some of you will remember the efforts by Shayna (SDMB People Pages), Opalcat, Max Carnage and probably many others that I forget.

I thought I would try to revive the idea and put up pictures of the posters on a website. I could have chosen something like Flicker but instead I wanted to combine it with a programming exercise to generate the HTML pages so I am hosting it at my small website instead.

The advantage of this method: you don’t need to login or create an account anywhere to put your picture up.

The disadvantage: you would have to e-mail me the picture.

Is anyone interested in contributing a photo?
The gallery would look something like this:

My recommendations for submissions (open to suggestions) would be:

• Submit a good quality photo (as big as can fit in an e-mail - I can resize it. I will resize them so that they are at most 800 x 800 pixels)
• If there are several people in the photo, please indicate which person is you.
• Please include an approximate date of when the photo was taken (e.g. 2008, Nov 2009) and a description of what is happening in the photo if the photo is an “action shot”. That will make the gallery more interesting.
• You can send more than one picture if you want. I can include several photos per person.
• No NSFW pictures please. I personally have no objections to naked people, but we all know that some people do their browsing at work and I don’t want to have to split up the gallery into two sections, the SFW and the NSFW section. Swimsuit photos are OK.
• If you could also include a link to your SDMB profile or mention your member ID in the e-mail that would save me the trouble of looking it up (I’m including a link to your profile under your photo.)
• To prevent mischievous scamps from playing tricks on me, it would be handy if you would send me the photos using the e-mail address in your profile. Or if your e-mail address is not public, then send me a PM at the board saying “I’m confirming that the e-mail from xxx@example.com is from me.”
• Obviously I have no way of checking this, but the gallery will be more interesting if the photo you send me is actually a photo of yourself and not someone else.

What do my fellow posters think? Are these unreasonable restrictions? Is this a viable project?

I am still working on my program so the photos I receive might not be up for a week or so.

P.S. The mods are OK with this and I hope that they will send their photos.

By the way, I realize that the index page at the site looks absolutely horrible in Internet Explorer. I have been experimenting with CSS to make it look right, but as we all know, Internet Explorer is notorious for behaving differently from any other browser. If you view it in Safari, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, the page looks fine.

Unfortunately I only have IE at work so I can't check my changes from home. But tomorrow it should look better.

I have finally finished the initial version of the Portrait Gallery. Thanks to everyone who sent me photos. New submissions would be very welcome. See link in my signature. I was hoping to have it done over the week-end but I decided to upgrade the OS on my PC and, well, things took longer than I expected.

If the page seems to have rendering errors (looks funny), please let me know. I'm not an HTML expert.

Also I just had a question from someone. The "index" page has links to the full pictures - click on the thumbnail to see the full photo. On the "index" page I cropped the photos to just show the face. If that's a problem let me know, and I can change the thumbnail version to include the entire photo.

Well, photos are better, but if you want to send in a caricature I'll put it up. You could also send a caricature and a photo, I would make your caricature the "main" photo but when they go to your photo page there would be another link saying "you can also see a photo of him here."

It actually caught me by surprise and you even warned me about that. Usually when you click thumbnails you just get larger versions; in this case you get a "full version". Very cool feature!

And that's not even a good picture of him! I took the photo during a Dopefest dinner and caught him in the middle of a blink. Trust me, he's very handsome in person. And I say this as an objective straight guy.

Oh, I forgot to give you the background to post with that picture, Arnold. It was taken in June of 2008. That's a replica of Robert the Bruce's mail and crown that I tried on in a museum in Scotland.

That would be fine. When you say "again?" do you mean you've already PMed me a link (I didn't see any PM for you), or that you have a photo in a previous photo thread that you would be willing for me to use? I think I saw one when browsing through old photo threads that I was searching for to include as a link at my site:

As you realized, I already have some Dopefest pictures up from the last two Dopfests I attended. If anyone wants to send me some Dopefest pictures I am willing to host them at my site. As a matter of fact someone has mentioned that in an e-mail. We would have to figure out how to get me the photos. I might be able to arrange a place where posters could upload them via ftp.

No, I've never PMed you about it, it's just that the OP said the disadvantage is that we would have to e-mail the picture. Apparently composing an e-mail is a lot of work for me. Do not use that picture.
