Iggy?
Or maybe I am not a word. baggy, buggy, doggy, and so on...
#4

Eggy, figgy, jiggy, saggy....

#5

Gypsy, but only when not capitalized: gypsy.

#6

Likewise gypped. w00t, 4 in a row.

#7

Both of which derive from the OP's "Egypt", of course.
Add "soggy" to the "ggy" pile, though I suppose there's no real need to try and list everything in that pile. Last edited by Indistinguishable; 07112012 at 09:30 PM.

zygote

Only if written in cursive, and then only if your z has a lower loop.

pygmy

#13

There's "pygmy".
And while I was checking on that one, I stumbled across "pygostyle" — "a triangular plate formed of the fused caudal vertebrae [ of a bird ], typically supporting the tail feathers." Also "pygidium" — "the terminal part or hind segment of the body in certain invertebrates."

Ah, yes, the famous cheer "Win one for the gypper!"...
Last edited by Indistinguishable; 07112012 at 11:03 PM. Reason: It won't be as satisfying as you expect, though...
#16

Thanks, all.

#17

If something were akin to being gypped, would it be gyppy?

#18

Most consecutive ascenders? Breadth?

#19

Brightly have I added to your little ascenders list. But being from Seattle, they come easily.

I feel kind of stupid here. What is a "descender"? Letters in reverse alphabetical order?

Letters where part of the glyph hangs bellow the base line. In the font my browser uses (lower case only): g, q, y, p, g, j

And don't forget g!

Starting with threeinarow, I find this many words:
3: 15996 4: 4889 5: 1542 6: 668 7: 138 8: 50 9: 4 If I eliminate 'i' from the list of ascenders, leaving only consonants, I find: 3: 2185 4: 24 The 7, 8, and 9sequence words from the first set and the 4sequence words from the second set are listed below. Including 'i': Code:

Nice nontechnical article on history of ascenders and descenders busting out after invention of cursive writing. Constantine enthroned 800 AD. Carolingian minuscule all government, hence huge swaths of Europe. The rest is history.

Typical. Get a few descenders together and their racism comes out. I always said descenders were a hate group.
