Oh, well, then: Reginald Denny, the Broadway actor who did a ton of flicks back when: lots of supporting roles, and more than a few top-billed screen performances.

Édgar Ramírez was top-billed on the small screen as Carlos the Jackal in CARLOS; and top-billed, on the big screen, as Roberto Duran in HANDS OF STONE; and in between, he was top-billed in that remake of POINT BREAK; and, so far this year, he’s been busy with top-billed work for this season of American Crime Story — since you need an interesting Gianni Versace if you’re doing “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace”.

Jonathan Nolan got an Oscar nomination for the MEMENTO screenplay, and then picked up writing-and-directing-and-producing Emmy nominations for WESTWORLD, and in between he and Christopher Nolan brought us THE PRESTIGE and INTERSTELLAR and various of Christian Bale’s blockbuster outings as Batman...

The Bryan Brothers have won a record 16 Grand Slam Doubles championships, and they set a separate record by simultaneously holding all four as the reigning Olympic gold medalists — and while Mike Bryan doesn’t count, I figure Bob Bryan does.

Speaking of sports — sort of — “Razor Ramon” was the name Scott Hall wrestled under when he won the WWF Intercontinental Championship four times.

And if he’s to be listed as “Scott Hall”, then I’ll add that Hall lost that title to, and then won it back from, Diesel — aka Kevin Nash — who promptly went on to wrestle under his own name, alongside Hall and a No-Longer-A-Face-But-Now-A-Heel-Can-You-Believe-It Hulk Hogan, who proclaimed themselves to be the New World Order.

Jack Kruschen was an Oscar-nominated actor, which I figure qualifies him even before mentioning his Hey It’s That Guy status from when Americans had like three networks to watch: he’s the real villain pitting Anne Baxter against Adam West on BATMAN, he’s the amiable chess grandmaster who gets murdered by Laurence Harvey on COLUMBO, he’s the go-to guy if you need someone to do his thing on I SPY or THE ROCKFORD FILES or BARNEY MILLER or THE INCREDIBLE HULK or whatever.

(I mean, yeah, he got name-on-the-poster roles in plenty of memorable flicks, too: McCLINTOCK and CAPE FEAR and THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN and so on — from a Rock-Hudson-And-Doris-Day flick like LOVER COME BACK to being the common enemy James Caan and Alan Arkin team up with in FREEBIE AND THE BEAN — and so, y’know, figure that at some point, he gets in there.)

Chiwetel Ejiofor — who, y’know, doesn’t count — picked up an Oscar nomination for starring in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, which in turn won the Oscar for Best Picture.

But the man Ejiofor played — Solomon Northup, who famously wrote the bestselling autobiography 12 YEARS A SLAVE — yeah, he counts.

Tom Cruise of course doesn’t qualify, because the movie star sensibly bills himself as “Tom Cruise” instead of as Tom Mapother IV. But, having said that, I’d argue that his cousin, William Mapother, has done enough recognizable work to count.

Emmy-winning television personality Edwin Newman “was a regular on the Today show and was its news anchor from July 24 to December 22, 1961, then a contributor and guest host. On Meet the Press, he was a frequent panelist and moderator ... In 1963, he made the first announcement on NBC Radio of President John F. Kennedy's death. He anchored the television coverage of the 1967 Six-Day Arab-Israeli War, the 1968 assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy and the 1973 Vietnam ceasefire. In 1981, immediately after the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, he was chosen to anchor NBC's television coverage until full news teams were mustered. Newman was the only journalist to interview Emperor Hirohito (Emperor Shōwa) of Japan. The interview took place in September 1975 at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, shortly before Hirohito's diplomatically-delicate visit to the United States. For his program Speaking Freely, he conducted more than 250 hour-long interviews with leading figures of the day between 1967 and 1976.”

And, with that running start, he started doing all sorts of other stuff — moderating presidential debates, hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, authoring a book and watching it reach #1 on the New York Times bestseller list — and he “was in demand to play himself in films and on television. Among his film credits were The Pelican Brief, Spies Like Us, and My Fellow Americans; television appearances included episodes of Newhart, Mr. Belvedere, The Golden Girls, Wings, and Murphy Brown.”

Lewis Stone, the Oscar-nominated actor who played the hero — but of course got billed second to Boris Karloff — in THE MASK OF FU MANCHU; and who got tapped for his fair share of top-billed roles, even before he somehow managed top billing as Judge Hardy in various of the ANDY HARDY movies.

Brings to mind two of the X-Men — Pyotr “Peter” Rasputin, the guy who can usually take punishment long enough for his squishy teammate to come up with something flashy and spectacular; and Alex Summers, an aforementioned squishy teammate who makes use of aforementionedly spectacular and flashy powers.

But if we’re supposed to stick to real-world types when it comes to the comics, I find myself wondering if two-time Eisner-winner Derek Kirk Kim’s name maybe deserves, like, a point and a half?

Hey, speaking of both comics and well-heeled guys with a ‘K’ name, let me note that the popularity of Frank King’s GASOLINE ALLEY strip “escalated until it was published in over 300 daily newspapers with a daily combined readership of over 27,000,000. According to Lew Merrell, the strip and its merchandising made King a millionaire.”.

And if you factor in the GASOLINE ALLEY movies and radio show, then suddenly the fact that King’s Highway got named after the guy makes a ton of sense.

Sam & Dave got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before quite a lot of other acts — before The Doors, before The Mamas & The Papas, before The Jackson 5, and so on, and so on — on the strength of memorable hits like SOUL MAN and I THANK YOU and HOLD ON, I’M COMIN’. And so I figure that Sam Moore counts; even without Dave, he’s belting out AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL at a presidential inauguration, or he’s putting out Grammy-nominated stuff with Eric Clapton, or whatever.

Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lechter both count. And their phonetic "S" and "L" form the initials of the most famous book written about them: Silence of the Lambs.

I wonder if that was inadvertent or deliberate.

Post #59. But how about American author and television host Hal Lindsey, who had a big enough bestseller in The Late, Great Planet Earth that it wound up in movie theaters to bask in the full Documentary-Narrated-By-Orson-Welles treatment?

(Quoth the NYT, it “remains the top‐selling nonfiction book of the 70's.”)

Well, look, if you’re going to bring up a big-chested blonde who ran in slow motion in Made-For-TV movies, then I’ll mention Captain America himself: Reb Brown, who on the big screen starred as YOR, THE HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE and on the small screen was memorably mocked by the MST3K crew for heading up SPACE MUTINY.

Rufus Sewell has something going for him — there’s a reason why he picked up a Tony nomination for his work on Broadway — but there’s a reason why he got tapped to play the antagonist to Heath Ledger, in A KNIGHT’S TALE; and then to Antonio Banderas, in THE LEGEND OF ZORRO; and why, when James Franco and Sophia Myles were cast as TRISTAN & ISOLDE, Sewell came between them as Marke.

(Heck, there’s a reason why THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE of course put Sewell to work as SS Obergruppenführer John Smith; DARK CITY gave him a leading-man role, but the noir premise does a lot of exception-that-proves-the-rule heavy lifting.)

According to The Sunday Times, William Marshall was “the best Othello of our time” since he was “nobler than Tearle, more martial than Gielgud, more poetic than Valk. From his first entry, slender and magnificently tall, framed in a high Byzantine arch, clad in white samite, mystic, wonderful, a figure of Arabian romance and grace, to his last plunging of the knife into his stomach, Mr Marshall rode without faltering the play's enormous rhetoric, and at the end the house rose to him.”

Having said that, he’s probably more well-known for starring in Blacula — and, y’know, starring its sequel, Scream Blacula Scream (And he nearly destroyed the Enterprise on Star Trek, so he’s got that going for him, which is nice.)

Lew Wallace was a Civil War general who sometimes gets portrayed on screen due to having presided over the Andersonville Trial, and who sometimes gets portrayed on screen due to having been governor of the New Mexico territory back when that meant dealing with Billy The Kid, but who has one other big claim to fame:

In 1900, Ben-Hur became the best-selling American novel of the 19th century, surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Amy Lifson, an editor for Humanities, identified it as the most influential Christian book of the 19th century. Others named it one of the best-selling novels of all time. At the time of Ben-Hur's one hundredth anniversary in 1980, it had "never been out of print" and had been adapted for the stage and several motion pictures.

(In fact, if you visit the website for the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum, right at the top it of course kicks off with a The Home of Ben-Hur.)
