On my feet, yes it’s gross. I have to use foot liners. They’re like nylon stockings for your feet. They don’t even reach the ankle. After just a few hours, they get kind of sweaty and gross, but better the liner than the shoe. I’ve got maybe 15 pairs and I use them every day in warm weather.

Nah. I used to do it often, until I discovered golf socks.

Wouldn't you risk some nasty blisters if you didn't? Your feet would be pretty gross after destroying them like that, sweat or no sweat. If it's that hot, stick with comfy sandals.

Wearing sneakers w/o socks isn't gross. What's gross is when you finally take your sneakers off.

My feet sweat and get sticky if I don't wear socks. No thanks.

Speaking for my feet - they want socks between them and my shoes, regardless of the shoe. I don't care what other folks do, but I will wear socks. You can't change my mind!

Do you wear socks when you wear slippers?

It depends. Lightweight canvas sneakers that you just walk around in? No problem. Sneakers designed for rigorous activity? Wear socks.

This course of action has resulted in consistently gross outcomes for me.

I never got toe jam from wearing socks.

I went through a phase as a teen where I couldn't be bothered to wear socks (basically I was too lazy to do laundry). After a few bouts of toe jam, I quickly changed that practice.

Yup. Unless it's late at night and I have to get out of bed to use the bathroom.

My first thought was "If it's gross, why wouldn't wearing sandals 'barefoot' be frowned on?" If sneakers get sweaty, wear low socks...

Anything but shorts with knee-high black socks!

(like I wear playing soccer, I just realized...)

I don't wear socks around my house. If I have to go out and check the mail or something, I just put my tennis shoes on without socks. (That's what I call sneakers. Blame a NE Ohio upbringing)

You can get football stockings in all sorts of colors: green, blue, red,..., not just black!

There are shoes and canvas boots, like boat shoes, where it is assumed they will get wet and provisions are made for the water to drain away and the foot to breathe. I would not try wearing socks with those, or you might end up walking around in wet socks, unless they were something like waterproof Gore-Tex socks, but at some point you have to step back and consider what it is you are doing, e.g., for hiking you may want hiking boots and wool socks, not plimsolls and naked feet. Anyway, avoid blisters and fungus!

The only applicable vote for me was "Not really" but it should have been "not at all". Most often I wear tennis shoes(sneakers if you must) when I am fishing, and it would be pretty stupid to wear socks when you know your shoes will get wet.

Other than that, I would be wearing shorts; and socks with shorts look dumb in addition to being unnecessary.

I suppose those with very odoriferous feet might make use of socks more often.

Running shoes here.
ETA: Or "runners" more colloquially.

What's gross, is paying so much attention to other people's personal preferences that don't concern you.

Perhaps you are mistaking "interested" with "cares about"?

UmmmÖ If your feet get gross, then it's gross. Or you have 142 extra feet. Which would be kinda gross too.

For me, gross. I sweat a lot, especially from the feet. Added to that is the fact that I just find it uncomfortable. The skin on my feet don't appreciate the inside of shoes for whatever reason.

However, for anyone else, it's not particularly gross. If you can do it without stinking the room up or making yourself uncomfortable, you do you.

I'd never do it, but I don't consider it inherently gross.

My feet stink terribly if I don't wear socks, hell even my children's feet stink if they don't wear socks.

I don't.

I got a pair of wool slippers for Christmas and they do a great job of keeping my feet warm and they don't stink. I guess wool has some anti-microbial properties or something. I love these things (www.nootkas.com)

For me, yep. You really don't want to be around me (or my shoes) if I got out of a pair of shoes where I haven't worn socks. For others? I don't know. Your biology/sense of smell may be different.

I typically do not wear socks. The exceptions are when wearing:

- boots
- running shoes only when running

That's about it. I go sockless pretty much all the rest of the time, including when wearing:

- sneakers, tennis shoes, when not running
- loafers
- dress shoes
- casual shoes
- flip flops and sandals
- etc.

My feet don't sweat, and I much prefer the coolness of not wearing socks. This is the course even in the winter.

This. It doesn't bother me if someone else does it, but on my own feet it's gross.

I have super-sweaty feet, so it's gross when I do it. I even wear socks with slippers and sandals (although I'm not much of a sandals guy in the first place).

This. And since we've got a small shopping center <10 minutes from the house, I'd even not bother with socks for a quick run there just to pick up a couple of things.

But for more than ~30 minutes of wearing sneakers, I'd want socks.

I grew up on a farm, so I don't think so. As my mother would say, "Wearing socks just makes another job for me." (re: she'd have to wash them)

I wear socks all the time. Often to bed, even. I have one pair of sandals that I don't wear socks with, but I rarely wear them because they aren't very comfortable.

I have toe socks for wearing with open-heeled shoes in the summer. I hate the sensation of skin sticking to the shoes, which is inevitable no matter which pair it is. Even the house slippers demand socks, because they are so warm my feet feel sticky in a very short time.

I started wearing socks all the time living on an island. I hated to feel of sand between my toes, and there was no avoiding it on an island.
