I don't know if that completely went over my head the first time through or if I just forgot about her. Thanks!

Y'r welcome -- I only followed the strip very briefly but I remembered that instance, still I had to use various search terms as I could not recall exact characters.

Meanwhile back at QC, Marten is in his usual mode of feeling he needs to explain what nobody asked for explaining.

There are actually two of them. In addition to Jocelyn (from the above links), there's also Carla, who's mostly appearing as one of Sal's extended circle. Unlike Joce, it hasn't been explicitly stated in comic that Carla's trans, but there's both word of god and some little hints in the comic (knowing since before she first appeared that she was trans, all the 'wait, I have a theory...Carla's trans' after both of the major ones made me laugh a bit).

I've only been following Dumbing of Age for a month or two. Is Indiana University REALLY that LGBT? There don't seem to be all that many straight kids in the strip. Have we just been following the non-straight characters lately, or will they change the name to Castro District U?

I'd reckon that if you'd tally up all the characters, there would still be an overwhelmingly straight cast. It's just that this level of representation is unusual, so it tends to stand out.

I think it's just a cyclic thing. Willis just happens to be running some story arcs about homosexuality currently.

Something like 2/3 straight and cisgender. Not sure if I'd call that overwhelming, but it's certainly majority.

And that's just the actual significant cast of students... It's unlikely that his selection of maybe 2 dozen characters is meant to be representative, percentage-wise, rather than simply representing a sampling of identities, and it skews straighter once the adults (teachers and parents) are included.

....Marten didn't really answer the question, did he?

"More to it than that? Well, since we live in Northampton, Massachusetts, dating a trans person increases my 'awesome' rating by a factor of ten. Also, yer cute."

I wasn't really sure what Claire was asking. Like, did she mean, "Do you have a weird fetish for trans people?" Because otherwise, aren't they just basically two people who care about each other? Does it have to go deeper than that?

Of course not. But it's a relationship - you dig deeper. Maybe Marten identifies as something other than completely straight, and Claire is curious if that's part of why he might be attracted to the relationship. Maybe Marten's just a dick who's looking for an opportunity to royally embarrass Claire (not likely, of course). Maybe Marten has put a lot of thought into why he doesn't have any particular problem with it, and Claire is looking for his insight - because obviously TONS of people do have an individual problem with it, otherwise transpeople wouldn't a difficult time starting such relationships.

No, they're two people who care about each other, AND they touch each other's genitals. That's at least the distinction I'm making between their relationship, and the relationship I have with my 83 year old neighbor.

Normally my reactions to Marten run from disinterest to annoyance. But I liked the way he handled the situation in today's strip.

Yeah...I'd say that when in danger of getting caught between your boss and your ex (who is your boss's current), the better part of valor is discretion...

Well, that and he's been there, and I think he knows that attempting to solve a problem like Dora is futile.

It's been three days, and I still laugh, thanks to the way Jeph put the last four frames together, every time I see it.

I'd say that Dora has officially become the most boring character in the strip. First fight with Tai, make up on the next day, yay, go team.

I'd love a fast-forward to the upcoming Emily/Clinton date that Marten and Claire are masterminding, because they look forward to the "entertainment value." So do I.

If the next several weeks shifted over to "The Adventures of Emily," I wouldn't mind at all. I love Emily. MUSKRAT!!!!

I'm impressed that Jacques didn't half-ass it and copy Tai in those four frames. If you look closely you can see he drew four separate pictures of her despite the fact she was motionless.

Yep. The shadows (especially those on her hair), among other things, are different. I get the impression he's like that.

I'm trying to think what the explanation for "that's no dildo, that's my brother!" is that isn't an incestuous bisexual threesome that Clair is recounting.

AIUI, "dildo" can also be a sophomoric imprecation. As in: "That dildo really gets on my nerves sometimes."

Clair's brother has a bionic hand, maybe it or he caused it to buzz/vibrate?

It's not an uncommon trope to have someone uttering a nonsensical punchline when entering a scene…that's what I thought was going on there.

Combination of these two, yeah - a punchline with no joke, and a poke at Clinton.

His bionic hand is also detachable. So somebody may have seen the hand by itself and thought it was a sex toy.

That and "That's no [blank], that's my [blank]!" is a pretty common punchline for that sort of thing. Usually wife/mother in some insulting format though, i.e. "So I say, that's no garbage truck, that's my wife!" or something similar.

So, did Emily vomit all over Clinton's shirt in today's strip?

He also has a black eye, presumably due to some adorable Emily mischief and not him doing something punchable.

Is that a tattoo of the 220v outlets on his arm or actual outlets? Neither makes much sense to me. Even for charging his hand, you'd think you could do that via micro-USB or a stiletto style plug like every other device in the world.

Clair's sass didn't make sense to me this week - the words themselves seemed more hostile than funny - but it was good to see Faye get some of her mojo back.

I noticed that too; but I had a completely different take on it. I just assumed that now that she has a boyfriend she's starting to feel a little more confident in herself.

I too am an curious about today's strip. Vomit and a black eye?

I don't know, they didn't seem hostile to me. If I saw someone gluing random dicks on things and calling it art, I think I'd have the same reaction.

I HOPE that's vomit. AT first glance I thought Emily had peppered Clinton's chest with birdshot.

After blacking his eye, tattooing him, and rolling up his pants.

I'm jealous. I seldom have dates like that.

Is that a black eye? Looks more like he was dressed as a droog, complete with mascara, and it's run a little. No codpiece or hat, though, and the pants should be white. Maybe just a regular punk...

But think about it - how is he going to get a black eye and still have his glasses unscathed?

I think the problem with Claire's remarks were that they were too familiar. She thought that because she was the girlfriend she was automatically friends with his friends. If she were actually friends with Faye then what she said wouldn't be considered bad. but she's not.

I agree with Rand (especially since that's exactly what Faye got on her case for).

Faye obviously would have sassed back, even if Claire had 'earned the right to sass' her, but it would have been more in the same tone.
