Trump not giving out medal of freedom

every year since 1963 the president gives out these medals to honor Americans. But that did not happen last year and it looks like it's not on for this year either.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...dom_recipients

as you can see a wide variety of people get the medals: actors, singers, politicians, doctors, lawyers, scientists, teachers, inventors, etc.

Maybe Trump is ticked when they told him he cannot give himself one.

He's probably trying to stave off the shame of having honorable people refuse to accept the medal from him.

he already had that problem last year with the Kennedy Center honors, so he skipped the awards ceremony which is rare for a president

What, you think anyone Trump would pick for one of these medals would be honorable?

In the dishonorable category, Bill Cosby is on the list , I think they said there is no way to revoke the medal. Cosby has had a bunch of honorary PhDs revoked , over 50 last time I saw the list.

I think his minions could probably find some famous deplorable people who would accept it; Kanye was mentioned above. He probably hates the idea of having to speak in praise of someone other than himself.

This actually surprises me. I would have thought that giving out medals was the kind of Presidential duty that Trump would revel in. I figure he loves to imagine himself as a king bestowing favors on his subjects.

If he gives out the MoF he can't rescind it if the recipient later displeases him, the way he regularly rescinds his blessings.

Cannot rule out sheer feckless incompetence as the explanation for this inaction, either.
Quote:
In February 2017, weeks into the Trump administration, the National Endowment for the Humanities was reviewing a list of nominees for the National Humanities Medals, one of the top honors for creative and scholarly achievement. The plan, as in previous years, was to submit names to the White House and await final approval.

But the NEH chairman at the time, William D. Adams, seemed skeptical.

“Interesting to contemplate where the medals might go,” he wrote to Larry Myers, director of the NEH Office of Planning and Budget [...]

“Perhaps nowhere. They can’t seem to get out of their own way there on Pennsylvania Avenue.”

Responded Myers: “Agreed. No one knows which end is up (or down) at 1600 Penn. Ave.”

Nearly a year and a half later [in July 2018], the fate of the Humanities medals — and many others — remains uncertain.

White House ceremonies for arts and science medal winners, a tradition dating back to the 1980s, have been absent so far in the Trump administration. Eighteen months into Trump’s presidency, there have been no new National Science or Technology Medals, or National Medals of Arts or National Humanities Medals. [...]

President Donald Trump also has yet to announce any Presidential Medal of Freedom awards, the country’s highest civilian honor.

He has awarded several medals for military service and law enforcement, including the Medal of Honor to Vietnam War veteran James C. McCloughan and the Medal of Valor to six responders to the 2015 San Bernardino, California, workplace shooting. [...]

But no new science or technology winners have been announced since December 2015, and no arts or humanities winners since September 2016.

The last Presidential Medal of Freedom was given in the final days of Barack Obama’s administration [...]
It might simply be one of the many, many standard duties this administration hasn't managed to tackle effectively.

I can't see thump ever giving out any kind of medal to anyone. Unless he gets one, too. I call to your attention the incident of the two scoops of ice cream and rest my case.

Perhaps he is too busy carrying out presidential duties, er I mean watching Fox news, to do it.

As an aside, how do you do crossed out fonts?

It'll be embarrassing for Nunes if he accepts a Medal of Freedom for his payoff and he ends up needing a pardon later on.

For every one he gave out, he probably pocketed two for himself.

But it's actually Congress who decides who gets those. He's just the guy who presents it on behalf of Congress.

Embarrassing for whom? Neither Trump nor Nunes seem capable of being shamed by their actions.

The explanation is quite simple. As noted in the article linked to the OP, Barack Obama gave out the most of these of any President. Trump is simply taking his default action of "do the opposite of whatever Obama did".

That's incorrect. The President is the final step in the approval process and has to approve all awards of the Medal of Honor. (Cite with the entire process.) Congress created the Medal of Honor in legislation. It's presented in the name of Congress but they don't have a role in the approval process if the chain of command forwards the recommendation within two years.

It isn't just the Presidential Medal of Freedom. No National Humanities Medals have been awarded since Obama's term. No National Medals of Science have been awarded since Obama's term. No National Medals of Technology and Innovation have been awarded since Obama's term. Nor National Medals of Arts. That's just off the top of my head; doubtless this caricature of a President is deficient in many of his other duties as well.

The sheer incompetence of this Administration boggles the mind. I'd repost some of the links to stories in respected sources, e.g. The Atlantic, documenting this but there's no point: Most of us have already clicked; the rest wouldn't click even if you promised them fifteen brand-new #MAGA hats.

Rick Perry had no clue what the DoE did 2 years ago, and still doesn't. Ross and Mnuchin are near-billionaires hired to "drain the swamp" who have instead used their power criminally to further enrich themselves. Trump is a dotard with the attention span of a rodent.

Trump insiders may have considered the idea of giving these prestigious Medals to Sean Hannity, Kanye West, Rush Limbaugh and others of this ilk but the adult babysitters discouraged such ideas — even some Republicans would see such awards as farcical.

To give such medals to people who deserve them — the best artists, humanitarians, top scientists, real heroes — would invite disaster. Most intelligent Americans despise this buffoon; so he despises them. Even if the awardee accepted the Medal, Trump would find a way to embarrass himself.

Most of the top Americans are just hoping we can stumble through another 27 months without catastrophe. Awards can come later.

ETA: The list of Humanities Medalists is a U.S. government webpage:
https://www.neh.gov/whoweare/awards.html
Error code 404.

The Pubs don't like science because it interferes with profit making. So they pretend like science doesn't exist.

All the medals not given out now will go to those who have to clean up the mess.

I guess they figured out dead people cannot turn down a medal.

Babe Ruth, Elvis, Scalia and others getting the medal.

Burying the lede:

"Medals will also go to Miriam Adelson, a doctor and wife of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a Republican donor"

Apparently you can buy one of these medals now. I'd say, "Imagine Obama doing something like this," but it's becoming a trite thing to say.

Elvis, Babe Ruth, Roger Staubach, Alan Page (Vikings DT 40-50 years ago), Scalia, Orrin Hatch, and Miriam Adelson, the wife of GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson.

Seriously, Miriam Adelson?? What's she done besides join her husband in giving shitloads of money to the GOP?
