Turns out the writer of the TNG episode “Measure of a Man” absolutely LOVES “The Orville”. She is green with envy because she and other writers would have loved to be allowed to turn in the same kinds of scripts.
She talked about it here: https://geeksguideshow.com/2017/12/1...on-one-review/

A bit of news from Dark Horizons:
Seth MacFarlane says the confirmed second season of his sci-fi series “The Orville” is “going to be at least” fourteen episodes, up from the twelve of the first. The plan is also to lean on a heavier science fiction tone and pulling back a bit on comedy to broaden the appeal.

MacFarlane confirmed there’s no intention to do a full twenty-two episode season, saying: “I’d rather do fewer episodes and have them be better content-wise than do 22 and have them be filler.”

(About what the Union's fleet is called...)

Anyone?
I never noticed this, but you're right. The Union force of armed starships is never named; the term "Union" is applied to both the political entity and the fleet, which is odd, albeit certainly a possible thing. It's referred to generically as "the military" at least once, but that doesn't appear to be a proper name.

Thanks. I was pretty sure I would've caught it if they ever mentioned it.

Late reply, I know. But I have read Flatland but would not know an Emerson quote. Flatland is a fun little book, ala Phantom Tollbooth. It appeals to me as an SF fan and a math nerd. Emerson is just some guy I vaguely remember from English class.

Just saw the pilot

I just watched the first episode. I didn’t laugh once. No comedy, no drama. What is this supposed to be?

The issue of choosing 30 survivors out of a possible 75 was also handled a little lightly.

In all fairness, there wasn't a lot of time. I'd have just taken all the children I could push into the shuttle.

First ID a couple of teachers (what good is saving a species if they lose their entire culture and history?) and then go for kids AND young adults (so they'll start having more kids right away, allowing for culture to be passed down.)

Anyway, I'll retract saying that every minute of the episode was bad. I liked when Bortus asked if they would be allowed to pick their own weapons during the couple's counseling.

Don't forget red indians, spacemen, and a sort of idealized version of the complete Renaissance man.
