Did a dog every east your homework for real?
And if so, was it homework on paper, or something a little more tempting like a building made of sugar cubes and frosting?

"The dog ate my homework"
"Dogs don't eat homework." "They do if you put peanut butter on it." The more recent twist (although obviously, now pretty old) is "The DOS ate my homework."

Never had a dog eat my homework, but I did have my pet cocker spaniel chew up most of a paycheck when I was in high school washing dishes in a Chinese restaurant. I had to give the paycheck back to my boss, and the accountant had to issue a new one. Much worse than chewing up homework.

I once had a dog who ate most of one my old textbooks, and a couple of other books, and a vinyl notebook, and a pillowcase, and a towel. But she never ate my homework, mostly because I wasn't in school when I owned her. A different dog I owned once ate a $20 bill. I can only imagine that the people who say "dogs don't eat paper" have never owned a dog.

I've had dogs. I know a dog will eat paper. Just curious if anyone actually experienced a dog eating HOMEWORK paper and had to trot out the excuse in real life. Although, for the purpose of my question, I will accept project-type homework like dioramas, models, paintings, what have you. This being modern times I'll also accept computer, tablet, or similar device used for homework.

When my wife was a TA in grad school our mastiff puppy ate a portion of a pile of papers she was grading. I think a quarter of the class had their homework eaten. I don't remember how she resolved it I just remember two days of stress as she tried to figure out how to explain it to the students on Monday.

My dog ate my high school yearbook, long after I might have been able to replace it. He took out a pair of not yet worn shoes too.
Darn dog!

I've had students who were generally honest say they had a puppy ruin their homework--I think I've heard "peed on" once or twice, as well as "eaten". And I'm not even sure modern students have even heard the expression.

No, but our dog ate an entire box of my crayons. The poop was amazing!
I'm convinced that cats have a third eye in their anuses, the way they're always sitting on reading material. Last edited by panache45; 02-10-2019 at 11:33 PM. |

No, but it did soil it once. Got the poop off mostly, but I still wound up redoing it rather than turn it in like that.

Dog ate my younger sister's homework, some sort of art project thing. My parents sent the remains along with a note to explain. We all thought it was funny but my sister was not amused.

Well, not a dog, and not homework, but my African Grey, Rocco, once tore up a bunch of money I was preparing for a deposit. I stepped out of my office for literally 2 minutes and he went apeshit on the cash. The bank helped me out, but I was short $5 after all wa said and done.
I'm more careful now. |

A couple of weeks ago, my husband was given some eye drops which he was supposed to use several times daily before returning to the doctor the next week. Nearly right away, they went missing...after having been left within reach of one of our counter-surfing dogs. Husband was dismayed at the thought of having to tell the doctor that the dog ate his eyedrops.

No dog issues but I once had a cat legitimately tear up a sheet of math homework I had left on the floor.

When I was taking guitar lessons, our class used a loose-leaf book put together by our teacher. My cat Katie (of blessed memory) wested on it. Made some of the notes blurry, but after everything dried, it was still usable. When the teacher asked why the page was all crinkly with a pale stain, I lied. Said it was tea.

Our dog ate my daughter's homework once. She didn't think that the teacher would believe her, so my daughter took what little was left of the homework in as proof. The teacher laughed and gave her extra time to redo it.

When our younger son was a high school freshman, he was assigned Thoreau's Walden. He hated that book with a passion. The dog, who never ate a book before or since (we've had her for nine years; this happened 4 years ago) unzipped his backpack, took the book out, and chewed it up. We also have a picture of our son lecturing a bust of Thoreau at Walden Pond.

Never had a problem with a dog, but I did have a horse which was quite partial to munching my sister's and my exercise books if given the opportunity.
Kids these days just don't believe that back then about half the kids in my primary school arrived on horseback. Last edited by penultima thule; 02-18-2019 at 07:20 PM. Reason: added the punctuation to avoid the Monty Python meme |

Yes! I had a science fair project involving growing plants under different conditions. I had little Styrofoam cups with bean sprouted plants here and there--some in the closet, some on the windowsill; some in soil, some in sand, etc. My sister's Yorkie waited until about a week before the science fair and tore up/ate/destroyed every single plant/cup that wasn't in the closet. My mom made a trip to the school to help explain on my behalf.

We recently had a foster dog eat her own adoption papers before we got around to signing them. This dog literally eats napkins and other paper if she gets the chance. Had to go back to the rescue and get new copies. They were amused.

The kitten is teething and she seems to have a thing for library books; I'm sure she'd be willing to branch out if I were still in school.

That reminds me, our dogs did tear up some of my books. One was a library book, still in readable condition, but the library wouldn't take it back and unfortunately I didn't want it. I took this dog-shaming photo, stuck it in the book with a note, and dropped it off at a laundromat. I hope somebody enjoyed it!
(I know, he doesn't look the least bit ashamed). |

I had a samoyed who loved me so much she would eat anything I offered and I got her to take a chunk out of an essay I needed more time on once.
My best school/pet story was the day I went home for lunch and found my beloved black cat dead under its favourite tree. I dug a hole and buried her sobbing all the while only to turn around to see her walking up to see what I was doing. I was late back for English and in quite a state. I whispered the story to the teacher who found it hilarious and made me tell the class. I never found out who owned the dead cat that I had likely mistaken for mine lolling about in that spot more than once.

There's got to be somewhere in there, the makings of a "reverse" version -- "my homework ate the dog". Novice biologist / psychologist / veterinary surgeon given the assignment of keeping a wolf for a while, and observing its behaviour; as a result of one or other creature getting out, or in, to where it shouldn't be, the family's small pet dog gets devoured?

My dog never touched my homework, but she did once pick up my homework assignment notebook by some of its pages. For some reason, my mom was concerned that the teacher would penalize me for the appearance of the damaged pages (they were at the back of the notebook -- nothing had been written on them), and instead of just tearing them out of the notebook she wrote an explanation as to what had happened.
