I think I gave the wrong answer. The correct factual answer to the question to me is not debatable, so reasonable people and unreasonable people would probably not disagree. I meant that reasonable people might disagree if they do not know the answer I intend. But once they do know the answer I intend they could not reasonably disagree. Sorry.

It is difficult. Say I tell you I was born in Richmond and I ask you where Richmond is. You could say Virginia, Indiana or California. All are right. Reasonable people could give different answers to my question. But only one is the one I intended. I meant it sort of like that.

Here is a better example. I am talking to a group of people and say I am from the South. Someone asks me where I am from and I say the south.

Joe: You are from the south, where in the south?
Me: I was born in Richmond
Joe: Where is Richmond?
Fred: Richmond is in Indiana.
Sue: No, Richmond is in California.
Bart: I have not heard of Richmond.
Me: Richmond is in Virginia.

Reasonable people could disagree about the answer to Joe's question, but in the context given it is unlikely reasonable people should disagree.

In the original puzzle it is given that none of the people know the answer to my last question but they know the context. So that was the kind of confusion I was trying to relay. Nothing more or less. And none of this is really important to solving the riddle anyway. Sorry for the distraction.

Did the group that was asked the questions have a specific identifier (i.e. they were not just a group of strangers, they were a group of people with a specific interest or occupation, or were present for a specific reason)?

Would figuring out the nature of the group help to solve the puzzle?

Did the people at the gathering all have the same or similar occupation?

Did the people belong to a particular political party or affiliation?

Did the people all support a particular political cause?

Did the people belong to a particular protected class (race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, etc.)?

Did the people at the gathering all live in the same location (same city, or same street, or same neighborhood, etc.)? Is this relevant to the puzzle?

Were the people at the gathering all members of a specific organization?

Did the people at the gathering all have the same hobby or recreational interest?

Were the people at the gathering all connected in some way to the same educational institution?

Did the people at the gathering all receive services from the same organization?

Is the connection between the people at the gathering related to a government entity or activity?

Are the people at the gathering all interested in a specific form of entertainment (T.V., movies, video games, etc.)?

Do the people at the gathering all do a specific type of activity (crocheting, woodworking, paint-by-number, playing an instrument, etc.)?

Do the people at the gathering all have an interest in something more practical (they all need to repair their cars, or obtain medical services, or get haircuts, etc.)?

Are they fans of something to do with music?

Did the reason you were asked to leave have anything to do with spoilers?

Did the ethics question have to do with something that took place within a T.V. show (i.e. the question had to do with the show content, rather than with external factors such as when the show aired, how it was produced, etc.)?

Is the show fictional?

Were you on Jeopardy! ?

Did you ask a correct question, about Virginia politics, for which the answer was on the board?

Did you ask an incorrect question about ethics in final Jeopardy, and you lost, and therefore were told to leave?

You got it!

I asked a question that everyone knew the answer, because it was already on the board (Catagory: Virginia Politics). My Question: Who was James Madison?

But when the topic of Ethics came up in Final Jeopardy, I didn't know the question for "The author of 1861's Utalitarianism" so I asked "Who was Bertram Smith" a name I remembered somewhere from college instead of "Who was John Stuart Mill?" I had bet too much and I lost and was sent home and could not come back, just as happens to everyone who loses.

++++

Later I got to thinking that a better version of this puzzle might be:

A man is invited to join a group because they think he will fit in well. He does and visits many times becoming quite popular at the gatherings. But one day while attending a gathering he makes the mistake of asking a question about the FedEx Company. This is NOT okay, and he is sent away and told not to come back anymore. How had he offended?

This would of course refer to Ken Jennings, whose question "What is FedEx?" was the question he asked incorrectly on his last game in Final Jeopardy, ending his famous run.

I think the original version is better that the Ken Jennings specific one.

I may post one later, but I won't have much time to check in and answer questions. Anyone else have one?

A woman had a conundrum also faced by countless others that day. End it. At first she thought the solution was suicide, but she couldn't do it. Then she remembered that it was Thursday. Whistling the tune of The Beatles debut single, she knew the answer. Shut down.

What was the situation?

She was doing a word puzzle A crossword, or something similar. She had letters S-----E already filled in. She considered the word SUICIDE, but it didn't fit. Then she thought of SOMEONE.

Was she doing the New York Times crossword?

Did the answer involve wordplay?

(A pun? Abbreviation? Phonetic spelling?)

I remember that Thursday (and Sunday) NYT puzzles often have a theme of some kind. E.g.: https://rexwordpuzzle.blogspot.com/2...dor-house.html Is such a theme the reason Thursday was relevant?

Was the Beatles song LOVEMEDO? Was that the correct xword answer?

Are you looking for an answer where we figure out why SUICIDE was a wrong answer and (some other word/words, LOVEMEDO or otherwise) was the correct answer? Do we have to guess the clue?

Since no one's been able to open the box and check on eschrodinger, I did some googling to find the answer. If the Beatles' debut single is LOVEMEDO, then I suspect the puzzle was this one: http://rexwordpuzzle.blogspot.com/20...-sun-2-14.html
(That's from 2/14/2016.)
"Shut down" refers, per post 3639, "not [to] the clue." Which seems to imply "but (maybe) to the answer." But I'm darned if I can find an answer in looking over that puzz that relates to "shut" (down) or "shut down." Let alone one that implies the wrong answer of "suicide."

Anyone? IWANTTOBELIEVE there's a good answer to this one.

This would be easier if I looked at the clues, but I gave up my NYTX subscription some time ago.

Answers in bold. Sorry I was unexpectedly out of cell phone range for awhile.

The guesses are all circling around the answer I was looking for. This is not based on a real crossword puzzle, but is based on a real "trick" of NYT Thursday puzzles. Spoilered below.

SPOILER:
It was a rebus puzzle, where there were only 7 spaces, but "SHUTDOWN" was the answer because both "LOVEMEDO" and that answer had "DO" in a single square.

Sorry if it was too hard, and sorry for leaving you hanging.

Who’s up next?

EDIT: now “SUICIDE” makes sense. ♂️

I was afraid it would be too easy, so i tried to obscure it a little more, but maybe I overshot. The idea was that "End it" was the clue. "SUICIDE" was a possible answer with the right number of letters, but didn't work with the crosses.

SHUT(do)WN crossed with LOVEME(do). Nice. The “down” in SHUTDOWN was a good obfuscator.
