Half the season you deserve. All the season we could handle.

Gear-head guy? That's like calling a Chinese person "Asia-face" !

"We've got a Carrot-Top situation going down behind the mall."

Hmm. Not sure I get either of those references.

The Akira one would definitely fit R&M style:
Quote:
Set in a dystopian 2019, Akira tells the story of Shōtarō Kaneda, a leader of a local biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amidst chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo.
If it's Carrot Top, I assume stupid props are involved.

Eta: I hear "Akira".

I heard Akira but I think Carrot-Top makes it funnier and more frightening at the same time.

The confusion is because they actually say "Akira type situation".

Totally. But I think a police scanner saying "we've got a Carrot-Top situation going down behind the mall" is a much funnier and somehow much more sinister line and I think it would have fit perfectly with the shows oeuvre. I'm kind of disappointed, now, that they went for the easy Akira reference rather than the imaginatively oblique Carrot-Top invocation.

I'm sure they'll do a good job on the Akira thing. Akira might be the new Cronenberg.

I guess a Carrot Top situation might be some wormhole suddenly opening and dumping mountains of pun like objects.

Apparently Hulu and HBO Max will get the new episodes, but only 5 months after the season finale: https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/ric...ax-1203387167/

So I was (am) a big fan of R&M. The second season episode where they are locked-down in the house with all the characters with fake memories--at least at one point in that episode, I was laughing so hard I had to shut it off and walk around outside to regain my composure. Probably the hardest I've ever laughed at anything.

...but last season, the show leaked across Reddit like a bad meme, and the fans there really did a lot towards ruining the show for me. For the first two seasons, there was some high-minded nuanced discussions breaking down elements of the episodes, which often contain extreme emotional depth. The Unity episode with the failed suicide at the end...stuff like that generated really great conversations. But then last season happened, and it's just idiots screaming "I'M PICKLE RICK!!!" everywhere they can, like in political forums or anywhere else they could force it in.

I don't think it helps that the season had no definitive conclusion...iIrc the creators bickered or nitpicked the final episodes to a point they scrapped them, so the planned conclusion was replaced with just a middling episode.

I'm sure I'm sounding like a "get of my lawn" type, but believe me, the reddit contingency has a habit of being so obnoxious it can turn you off in a hurry. I have it as well quarantined as I can, so I'm hoping I can get back to fully enjoying the show, and I hope this season is as good as the hype.

I would just ignore everything but the show. I thought season 3 was great, but I will at least agree that Pickle Rick is not as great an episode as some people think.

I hear you; last season wasn't the equal of the other two, I don't think. My defense of the showrunners would be that they are going for a big statement on the effect of Rick on Morty's life via an extended look at Evil Morty. (Then again I could be wrong and we'll never see or hear of Evil Morty again.)

Well, those were great, I'll concede.

In some ways the writers have set themselves a difficult task, not only in coming up with great new sci-fi ideas and gags, but in carrying forward the family story. We've seen a lot of development in the relationships between the Smiths and Sanchez---much more development than is normal in comedy (or in cartoons).

If anyone can pull it off, it's this creative team, though.

LOL. No.

Sure if they'd kicked out a half season a year later than the last one. But they've taken this long to make 5. They're not getting any quicker.

The supposed golden age of TV seems to slow down most TV shows as they become successful. Rick and Morty. Better Call Saul skips a year. Game of thrones (ok, bad example, it was golden age, not now), skips a year, and does a short season. The reality is that the quality is there, but not the prolificacy.

Superb first episode though...

I heard Akira. Akira made sense in the context (powerful godlike killing machine)

Akita is a dog, right?

Is this a whoosh? At the end, Jerry talks about “anime stuff happening to my son”; and, if you listen to the slightly odd way he pronounces “ann-ee-may”, I think it retroactively makes his earlier remark clearer.

Like, picture a guy saying he’s studied karate, but picture him pretentiously saying it almost like it was “Kah-Da-Tay”. Try it a couple of times yourself: get a smug look on your face, and say: “I’ve studied [pause] Kah-Da-Tay.” And then, still in character, say your son was in an Akira situation; but (a) pause ever so slightly just before you say “Akira”, and then (b) say it as “Ah-Ki-Da”.

Or, they've taken this long to make 10, but they don't want to show all 10 at once and then make everybody wait another who knows how long before the next one after that.

Comedy Central did something similar with Futurama; they made 26 episodes at a time, then aired 13, waited a year, and aired the other 13.

Anybody else notice the change in the Harmonious Claptrap screen in the closing credits? Looks like Dan Harmon's life took a turn for the better. I assume the woman is Cody Heller.

Dan Harmon has said that the reason it took so long for season 4 to come out was a negotiation tactic with the network, who would only sign year-to-year contracts, so they stopped producing the show until they agreed to a multi-year deal. In theory, they'll be released at a faster clip from now on, but who knows?

I was watching one of the early presidential debates, where the subtitles referred to the Senator from New York as "Senator Gym Brand." I wouldn't take subtitles as authoritative, and Jerry confusing Akira for akita is delightfully in character for the poor dipshit.

I have no idea what you all are talking about with "akira" and "akita". It was clearly "Carrot Top".

And the wasps eating Mr. Goldenfold was the best part of the episode.

I'm gonna have to go with Rick having to deal with an alarming number of fascist parallel worlds as the best part, as it felt like the sharpest jab at the toxic part of the fandom who think Rick is worth emulating and throw tantrums over chicken nugget sauce.

Pretty good S4E1! Loved all the different kinds of alternative Ricks being awakened. Great to see Mr. Meeseeks again (his instant change of expression when Rick sicced him on Sturmbannfuhrer Morty was maybe the best moment of the show). Very funny to have Morty, guided by the death crystal, tentatively making his way through the world in such a way that he would die in Jessica's presence (and then the post-credits reveal was perfect).

The CMN chyron clearly referred to Morty as "Akira Boy."

Best lines:

"Honey, stop raising your father's cholesterol so you can take a hot funeral selfie."
"You are down with fascist dystopias, right?"
"Hey hey, ho ho! Not cloning your grandpa has got to go!"
"Stop asking questions, stop doing meta-commentary and just have fun!"
"Kill this Nazi prick!"
"There's a lesson here and... I'm not the one that's gonna figure it out."
"What, cover me in gasoline and spiders? Fine, yeah, I'm in."

For a show that uses as much improv and ad-libbing as Rick and Morty, it's not that much of a difference.

I read nothing about this episode and went in blind.

Loved it, great episode. I really think it was a great standard adventure episode of the show.

Loved the Kirkland Meeseeks.

No, I'm not trolling you, I just don't buy "It was in the subtitles," as reliable evidence for what a particular line of dialogue might be. Subtitles are quite frequently wrong, even when dealing with scripted performances. This is exacerbated by the fact that, in this particular instance, a lot of the dialogue is improvised or ad-libbed, meaning that the lines aren't actually written down anywhere. So if the person writing the subtitles is working from the script, the script isn't going to match the dialogue in the show.

I've never been to Costco, I am aware that Kirkland is their store-brand. It's a general joke about knock-off store-brands not being as good.
