Think about the music. The drum and fife and flag is a classic Revolutionary War image. Or the well remembered WWII songs. Heck, Ride of the Valkyries certainly isn't about volcanoes, right?

This whole business about War Anthems being started as a paean to the Volcano God is just silly.

I have long held the conviction that war anthems originated as paeans to the Volcano God. I can't be the only one. Who else among us agrees with me?

What you're saying makes a lot of sense. Except, what about war anthems? There's absolutely zero reason for them to exist.

Aw hell, guys, Go_Arachnid_Laser heard us. What do you wanna bet he comes over and tries to sneak one of his war obsessions into the conversation?

I hear what you're saying, but here's the thing....0.99999999999999 is NOT the same as 1. 'Same' implies equal, and while the difference may be very small there is still a difference. I think we can all agree on that.

If you try to divide 100 by 3, the result will be 33.33333333, etc. It will never resolve itself into a whole number. Yet you can still divide 100 by thirds evenly. It's just a matter of the mechanics by which you divide.

I don't even know what you people are talking about. Time to insert an anecdote about the lil'wrekker and her math scores. No?
Well, I will just go threadshit somewheres else.

I know this is supposed to be like a game thread, but if you like the concept of a person experiencing time backwards, you would probably enjoy reading The Once And Future King by T. H. White.

White accounts for the weird wisdom of Merlin by explaining that he is living life on the reverse timeline from everyone else.

True story: in my childhood neighborhood there was a minor celebrity named 'Professor Backwards' and he did everything backwards all the time. I think he was even on Johnny Carson and whatnot.

He was robbed and killed in his house, and everybody thought it was very funny to say it was ironic that he didn't see that coming. Which I thought was unfair, given that he was Professor Backwards and not Professor Psychic.

I'm not saying Chicago doesn't have it's fair share of celebrities, but you won't find too many in the smaller suburbs.

That may be so, but I can't think of a single example of a celebrity who just suddenly dropped off the face of the earth. I mean, not the really well known ones. It's always the B-level stars that you stop eight years later and think "What ever happened to him/her?" But the really top flight folks, once they're in the spotlight they stay there; it's in their blood.

Once, when I was a kid, I wore a backwards costume for Halloween. All my clothes were backwards, I wore a mask on the back of my head and a wig on the front, and even made backwards shoes. When I went to people's houses for trick-or-treat, I made "impossible" movements for them. I even won a prize in a school contest.

Even minor Chicago celebrities should not make fun of children who must wear their clothes backwards. It's hard enough for these children to fit in without being teased. My neighbor's son was in therapy for years over this. He even had to give up the bagpipes, and I think he might have been good enough to be best at his school in playing them. But the other kids were so merciless in their taunting, ignoring his talent all because the child's clothes were inverted. What sort of mean bullies would make fun of some other youngster struggling with his reversed attire? It is impossible to understand. At least I know posters at the SDMB wouldn't tease a child just because his buttons were on his back.

Well, thank you for the Volcanology lesson. Very informative.

By the way, this reminds me- did you see that viral video of the up and coming wrestler from Chicago Andy "The Volcano" Johnson making fun of a kid because he was wearing his shirt backwards? The backlash was so strong, he seems to have disappeared from the face of Earth.

Well, to quote Wiki:

Quote:
Vulcan was an inhabited M-class planet in the Vulcan system, a system located in Sector 001 of the Alpha Quadrant. It had no moons, but appeared to have close planetary companions. It was the homeworld of the Vulcans, a warp-capable humanoid species. (TOS: "The Man Trap", "Amok Time"; TAS: "Yesteryear"; Star Trek: The Motion Picture; VOY: "In the Flesh"; ENT: "Strange New World"; DIS: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")

Vulcan was a founding member of both the Coalition of Planets in 2155 and the United Federation of Planets in 2161. (ENT: "Zero Hour", "Demons", "Terra Prime", "These Are the Voyages...") During the Dominion War of the late 24th century, Vulcan's strategic importance was on par with worlds like Andor, Berengaria VII, and Earth. (DS9: "In the Cards", "In the Pale Moonlight")

Didn't that poster actually shuffle off this mortal coil back in 2007? He also claimed Vulcan was an inhabited M-class before he croaked.

Hence the (1) volcanoes AND the (2)war anthems AND the (3) equation.

Just a heads up, someone here is posing as a dead poster. Don't be fooled, that person died long ago. Forum rules forbid pointing him out by name, but I think you all know who I'm talking about.
