Do you have any weird food combinations that actually taste good to you?


I usually add potato chips or Doritos to PBJ's, ham & cheese, sloppy joes, and hamburgers. IMO, it adds some extra flavor to the sandwich, along with an added crunch as well.

The most common food, drink, and condiment combos (IMO) include: dipping fries in milkshakes, using different flavors of milk for cereal, using more than 1 condiment, and mixing all holiday food together (Thanksgiving).

On an extra note, a "Hurricane" is when someone uses every single sauce that's available. This usually happens at Subway or similar restaurants.

My wife thought it was weird that I "dipped" Fritos in cream cheese. It's pretty much the only thing we ever used cream cheese for growing up. It's delicious!

I make cranberry sauce with zero added sugar by just simmering cranberries with a splash of water. I then add a few tablespoons of this cranberry sauce to a dish of plain Greek yogurt. Delicious!

A good, sturdy cheddar cheese makes a fine sandwich with quite a range of jams/jellos/preserves. Some you might like to try: strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant, cranberry, apricot, apple.

Cottage cheese works well with Indian pickles like lime or brinjal.

Marinara (or any red) pasta sauce and Sriracha. Easy way to add a little heat to spaghetti or lasagna.

I always get a Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwich with mayonnaise. I was introduced to this exact sandwich probably in the early 1980's by a dude who worked for my dad, and I don't think I have ever seen anyone else ever order a BEC with mayonnaise except for me and him.

As someone who doesn't care for Mayo, I can tell you many restaurants put it on their bacon/egg/cheese sandwiches. I have to be careful to order it without.

They put in on burgers too


To the OP, I like peanut butter on Swiss cheese.

I do sour cream and pineapple which I imagine is pretty close. I'll have to try your version though.

How about sauerkraut and eggs? Drain the kraut and cook in a skillet until it dries and browns, then throw in a couple of eggs and mix it all together.

My dad's favorite weird food combo was cherry cake and pepperoni. A bite of cake, then a slice of pepperoni. We all laughed at him until we tried it. It is good! That was always his birthday dessert.

Pizza (must use a tomato-based sauce) and a glass of either chocolate milk or a chocolate milk shake. I've loved this since grade school.

Cinnamon-sugar soft pretzels dipped in yellow mustard.

Spaghetti with meat sauce and untoasted italian bread with butter and grape jelly.

I think I really must like sweet and salty combinations, but I don't think that's too uncommon.

Fresh strawberries dipped in balsamic vinegar, with or without a 2nd dip in powdered sugar.

Fresh strawberries rolled in freshly cracked black pepper.

Figs or dates stuffed with blue cheese, wrapped in prosciutto, and seared in a balsamic vinegar reduction.

Pineapple jalapeno jelly with cracked pepper, a dab of cream cheese, both sitting on a Ritz cracker.

Are these considered weird? I would not be surprised to see them on a catering menu or in a good cook book.

I like peanut butter with spicy bread & butter pickles in a sandwich myself. I've also been known to do peanut butter with hot pepper flakes, but it's not quite the same as without the acidic punch of pickles.

Qadgop mostly beat me to it, but here's how I learned it:

Strawberries soaked an hour in balsamic vinegar with a pinch of sugar. Then serve over vanilla ice cream with a bit of coarse black pepper.

A guest at a party I attended brought a salad made from watermelon, supremed grapefruit and oranges, fresh jalapeno & mint, tossed in a balsamic based dressing. I think there was something else dark in color, maybe blueberries or grapes? Anyway, I took a small, just-being-polite token portion and quickly went back for more. I was astounded at how well it all came together.

I sometimes stir a few spoonfuls of hot giardiniera into cottage cheese with a small pinch of oregano.

But it has to be the right kind of peanut butter on the right kind of hot dog. Kraft smooth peanut butter, the kind with sugar in it, to start with. Organic "just peanuts" peanut butter will NOT work. The weiner is ideally a Schneider's Red Hot, vaguely smoked and vaguely pork. And the weiner should not be too moist either.

I think there's some sort of savoury/sweet contrast thing going on.

That combination is actually a bit more popular than one would think. This article even has the history of it. Apparently, it's associated with the South and goes back to the Great Depression.

I've tried it, but it doesn't quite work for me. I go the pickles route when I want something tangy to go with my peanut butter.

Grilled peanut butter, bacon, and banana sandwiches, I love the texture and the sweet and salty combo. For snacking, I love soft pretzels dipped in Caesar dressing. My daughter got me started on it, and I can’t imagine never trying it before.

ETA: Almost forgot to mention: This diner we frequent has a dish that consists of Pulled Pork (with sauce) on Macaroni & Cheese on top of a Cornbread Waffle with Cinnamon Butter and you can get syrup. It's 2190 calories.

I thought this was weird until my wife and kids introduced me to it, and I realized that every mall has a pretzel place that serves them like this.

Also ruined one of my frugal snack strategies, as I can no longer buy a $2 box of pretzels without doubling the price with at least 1 block of cream cheese.

I like mustard on a lot of things, including pretzels (soft or hard). So that's what I do. No one else I know eats mustard at all.

Is it weird to dip hard sourdough pretzels in ice cream? My uncle turned me on to that when I was a kid. Doesn't matter what kind but I prefer something chocolate based.

I got into this when I lived in Germany back in the 80s, and yeah, I get some odd looks. If anyone gives me an "Ewww", I ask them if they also hate potato salad.

A now-defunct restaurant in Chapel Hill, where I grew up, served an "African Tuna" sandwich. I have no idea why it was named that, but the filling was:
-Canned tuna
-Olive oil
-Garlic
-Curry powder
-Cayenne

and it was tasty.

But that's not the weird part. They served a variation of the sandwich, in which the tuna was spread on peanut-buttered toast, and it was freakin DELICIOUS.

I also sometimes make myself a tuna melt using this recipe.
