I don't recall pins always being part of the old WWWF style death match. I saw Bruno and George the Animal Steele in one and almost the whole flght was on the floor. I think Gorilla Monsoon was the special ref outside the ring for that fight. Long time ago, don't remember all the details.

Just want to throw out some props for Aleister Black and Buddy Murphy. Their match on last week's Smackdown was one of the best classical pro-wrestling style matches I've seen in ages.

And/or big on Archer. Some reports that things are very much thawing between NJPW and AEW, possibly because ROH is a bit of a sinking ship, and Anthem/Impact just kicked NJPW off of AXS TV in the US.

AXS reportedly wanted New Japan to make a talent-sharing agreement with Impact as a condition of staying in the Network, and they probably refused because of how their guys got misused in the TNA era.

Don't write off RoH just yet. True, the best of their roster defected to AEW and Marty Scurll is on his way there, and Juice Robinson kicked them to the curb after being set up as their top babyface...

RoH begat the Undisputed Era, Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe, Seth Rollins, Cesaro, Lio Rush, Damian Priest, Dominik Dijakovic, AJ Styles, the Viking Raiders, Daniel Bryan and Sami Zayn for WWE. See how much they contribute to the success of the bigger feds? They're needed!

I never saw a WWWF "death match," so I don't know how those worked - WWWF also seemed to be the only organization where a "cage match" was won only by escaping the cage (although the NWA Los Angeles promotion required a pinfall and then an escape to win), and now it's hard to find a cage match where escaping isn't a win, except, ironically, in WWE's Hell in a Cell and WarGames matches - but every death match I ever heard of was of the "pinfall, then get back up before the 10 count" variety; there's one of these on the WWE Mick Foley DVD set.

With night one of Wrestle Kingdom concluded, the card for tomorrow is set - it's Okada vs. Naito in the main event for both belts, with Ibushi/White in the third place match, while new US Champ Jon Moxley will be defending against Juice Robinson.

I definitely ask this out of ignorance because I really only watch one kind of wrestling and I'm not an observant person in general.

What's the actual difference between AEW wrestling and WWE?

Because NXT was doing a clip show or the awards or whatever I watched AEW for the first time in forever and I honestly saw little-to-no difference between the wrestling. I guess AEW is less averse to blood and they have harsher gimmick matches? Maybe more swearing?

Is there anyone who can explain the differences to me?

Okay, technically the "knockout" stipulation means "the referee can count someone out with a 10 count at any time," and this is just a glorified combination Last Man Standing / I Quit match - another example of how companies are changing the way things are done because That's How WWE Does It So That's How Everybody Is Expecting It To Be Done Now.

AEW so far seems to have significantly more 'spot-fests'. Supposedly, AEW is plotting their storylines further than WWE. AEW has far fewer big, buff wrestlers. AEW is tracking wins and losses and working them into storylines.

But at the end of the day, it's just another wrestling fed, well-founded with national exposure. I hope it has staying power because competition is good.

Tetsuya Naito is NJPW's first double champion, having bested Okada on night two of Wrestle Kingdom to claim both the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental championships. A new challenger has already arisen, though - while he was celebrating his win, KENTA hit the ring and hit him with a GTS.

Chris Jericho was able to beat Tanahashi, which probably means that AEW title match won't be happening unless shenanigans prevail. (It'd certainly be one hell of a main event for Revolution next month.)

Jon Moxley retained the US title over Juice Robinson, but Minoru Suzuki has announced himself as the next contender for the title, which should be an awesome match when it happens.

Surprisingly, Jushin Liger took the pin in both of his final matches. I guess going out on your back is the old school way of doing things, but I really wish he could've gotten one last hurrah.

Overall, Wrestle Kingdom was pretty good this year, though the stream got pretty choppy on the second night and I missed some of the early matches because of it. The first night had way too many multi-man matches of the type that usually wind up on the undercard on NJPW shows. I get the impression that they felt like they had about a show and a half's worth of important matches and decided they could do either one eight-hour show or two five-hour shows with some filler, and went for the latter. The execution wasn't perfect, but at least the crowd didn't get worn out by the time the main events came around.

Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi, Okada/Naito, and ZSJ vs. SANADA were probably my favorite matches of the show.

since i didnt have time for this ccause of holidays ill give the version i know

The NWO originally came about in japan when njpw bought out a bunch of 10-15 man touring feds(think michnoku pro types) and had a ton of mid-carders with some who were training under muta now

NO ones sure if it was management or mutas idea but since they hadn't had a heel/rudo faction in a while and guys needed to get over the NWO was formed with muta in hogan's role..... it pretty much was a bullet club/young bucks lasted a year or so but was popular as hell for a while ... Well since wcw still had new japan connections and wrestlers who went back and forth had spoken of it..... wcw made a deal for the use of it

Originally some of the new japan guys were supposed to join wcw but i dont think it happened in the us although there were mentions of a "NWO japan" here and there

But the NWO shirt with "new world order" written in Japanese under the block is worth money because they really didnt sell them to the public

Paul Heyman announced on RAW that Brock would be the first entrant in the Royal Rumble (and of course win it).

So, if he does win, that means nobody challenges him for the World title at WM, and he challenges Bray Wyatt for the Universal title. I think WM tacitly requires both titles be on the line, so that means Brock won't win RR. Besides, the SD storyline is building up Bray vs Bryan, not Bray vs Brock or Broken Matt or the Brood or any Bros.

So, will we get the Brock Lesnar show the whole match until the very end? It worked for Rey and Ric, because they won by using guile, not brutality. I'm not keen on seeing Brock for over an hour, but maybe Heyman will think of enough interesting twists.

Or, they have a "unified champion" until the next Money in the Bank, which ends with Brock defending his unified belt, only to be beat down afterward, then there's a cash-in by whoever had just won the briefcase - and then it is pointed out that the contract says that the winner gets to challenge for one title, thus bringing back the title split.

Nothing much must be going on if I'm marking out over Alex Shelley coming to NXT. Shelley was announced as Kushida's partner in the Dusty Rhodes Classic. All they did was show his picture. No inaugural match, no run-in, no promo.

Shelley and Kushida were the Timesplitters in New Japan for three years and won the IWGP tag titles bunches of times. Prior to that, he was part of the Motor City Machine Guns with Chris Sabin, and they won the Impact tag titles bunches of times. He eventually wound up in RoH, reunited with Sabin, and won the RoH tag titles. A year later he announced he was retiring, but apparently didn't mean that year. He's definitely an influence on the Young Bucks and other junior heavyweight tag teams. He should have gotten a better intro. The dude's fucking amazing, and I hope his return isn't just for one match.

The Cauliflower Alley Club has announced the passing of WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, father of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, at 75 years old.

My memories of Rocky include one of the sweetest drop-kicks in the business, and his time as a tag team partner of Tony Atlas

Impact Wrestling has been banned from Twitch, due to a segment they ran which was basically softcore porn of Rob Van Dam in bed with two topless women.

You can change the name and change the management, but TNA gonna TNA.

That was the first Impact I had watched in a while, and those chicks were wearing pasties and swapping spit: a hair's width from an R rating. RVD was channeling some Ric Flair at his playboy douchebag finest.

I like Don Callis on color. He makes Josh Matthews break character with his slow burns.

Booker T doesn't like that men have to job to Tessa Blanchard now that she's Impact world champ. but Lucha Underground booked women over men frequently and their matches were still awesome. LU also didn't make a big deal about women breaking barriers or anything. With them, it was the gods demanding any able body take arms to satisfy their bloodlust. Gender didn't matter.

Lucha Underground was different, though, that was a fictional universe in a way that even the Undertaker at his most magical wasn't. LU had literal gods and dragons, most people ended up connected to mystical Aztec tribes, etc.

I'm not sure I fully agree with Booker T's comments, but I do think that it does put them in a bind if they want to keep things semi-realistic (which I'm not always sure about, as one moment they have Ken Shamrock doing MMA stuff, then the next they have Rosemary literally teleporting around)

Ohhh that makes more sense. A facebook group I'm a part of was freaking out when Alex Shelley came out and I hadn't any idea why...now I do.

NXT Worlds Collide was beautiful. I thought it'd be a one-off, but this was booked to fine detail. Each pair of opponents studied each other's playbook and countered each other's signature moves. There were a few blown spots here and there, but they recovered adroitly and the commentators would add some sort of detail to make it not look so bad. Each participant had their own entrance style, and if they were a team, they'd do some kind of group gesture in time with their entrance music. Each tag team would wear identical trunk styles. The overall setting had a main event boxing match feel. The announcements reverberated like echos, and they only kept the ring under lights. The focus was purely on the talent. Nobody had their spotlight stolen.

I was surprised to see Jordan Devlin win the Cruiserweight belt, but I'm glad he did. I was afraid his career was destined to be main event jobber, but he all the sudden won a belt! Not only that, he got to gloat about it afterwards and make the audience hate him more.

The last match, Alexander Wolf got injured and taken out early. I guess it was legit, though I couldn't really tell what happened. He had taken a double kick from the former ReDDragon, and Fish did a cover, but it looked like Fish jumped off as if Wolf had actually kicked out, but he just barely jostled. That's when the ref called for the ring medics. The camera didn't show Wolf being looked at with concern, so it must not have been kayfabe. Still, this was the best kind of match for someone to get legit injured, as it immediately continued as a 4 on 3 contest. US made Walter look like the Incredible Hulk. They flew across the ring whenever he smacked them. After Imperium won, they stood on the ramp in formation under the spotlights, as if Alexander Wolf never existed. Damn, that's going to kill his career. It makes him look like a wuss who wasn't needed for the win.

Wolf got kicked in the face hard, right on the bridge of the nose. Probably went into concussion protocol. Nigel was wonderful, saying that O'Reilly (think it was O'Reilly, but might have been Fish) put his hand under the shoulder for extra leverage and the red caught it. Makes no sense, but great explaining on the fly to the TV audience about why Wolf didn't kick out.

Without spoiling, that was a very, very, very well booked Men's Royal Rumble match. Better than the Women's, unlike last year. And, IMO, the right guy won. Hope it translates into a good WM match.

+1. This was one of the best WWE PPVs I saw in years. The right guy did win (Drew McEntyre) and he looked fantastic, eliminating Brock with a slight assist from Ricochet. Nothing felt like Vince's hands were involved. No pointless last-minute belaboring, no "fuck the previous storyline" moments, no obvious preference for Vince's flavor-of-the-week...

Mr. and Mrs. Edge Phoenix came back and looked tough. Beth's head got gashed and her hair was half blood throughout her time in the WRR, but she stuck it out and hasn't lost a step. She sounds so nice on NXT commentary, but she was anything but nice to her opponents. Edge looked like a grizzled rock star and took a few scary-looking bumps, considering his reason for retirement. He and Orton reunited to take out a few opponents, prompting one to ask "who's going to backstab first?" It was the Rated R Superstar of course. Welcome back Edge! I look forward to seeing him work with the guys that came after his heyday, like AJ Styles.

Beanca BelAir looked scary good and she should be some kind of champ. I still can't get into heel Bailey, and the announcers wore out the "rough childhood" angle with Lacey Evans. They need to stop involving the wrestlers' children. Lacey's daughter looked like she was laughing, just like Shane McMahon's kids did when his face was mashed into the side of a cage a couple years ago. Daniel Bryan took some nasty lashes in the strap match, but got in a good comeback on Bray by pulling the strap across the Fiend's mouth like a garrote. It was reminiscent of Mr. Bill getting his face mashed by Mr. Sluggo in the old SNL days. Oh Nooooo!

Most of the entire PPV was very, very good. Roman and Corbin started us off with an entertaining brawl that ended up on the Astros' dugout. I was wondering if they'd be allowed to go that far. The right people won the Royal Rumble matches. I expect Becky's title reign to end at Charlotte's hands at WrestleMania. Not sure about Brock's against Drew.

It's great to see Drew McIntyre pushed not only as the guy who eliminated Brock, but as the guy who won the Royal Rumble. I've liked him for a few years now. I've even had him win the Royal Rumble in the WWE '12 video game and go on to defeat John Cena at WrestleMania. Lesnar looked like a monster, as well he should have, in setting the elimination record for a 30-man Royal Rumble and tying it overall.

Bryan vs. Wyatt was brutal but thankfully not one-sided, though it was at first. And good to see Becky finally beat Asuka.

Drew has the in-ring talent and mic talent to make a run at the top. Hopefully they give him a shot. As for Asuka vs. Lynch, I personally would have preferred something more along the lines of Tommy Dreamer vs. Raven where it took Dreamer ~2 years to overcome Raven (Raven was jumping to WCW, but subverting convention was being given substantive consideration). Given the only other "screw job" was a handful of tights, I think they could even have given Asuka a count-out or DQ win. They wouldn't have to fight over and over and over again, but whenever it was revisited, there would be a built-in story. But that's just my fantasy booking.

Am I the only one that didn't like the Rumble? I was bored to tears and thought the constant throwing out of actual superstars was a classic case of burying the roster. The most interesting the Rumble got was AFTER Brock was gone.

Having Brock roll through guys like that did what exactly? Show him as tough? We knew that. That he never loses? We knew that. It was just stupid.

I didn't really dig Brock's dominance either. I haven't liked that style of booking since he did those 15 zillion suplexes to John Cena. WWE even makes legit negative audience reaction to him an angle. But, Hulk Hogan used to be booked this way, and he eventually became enhancement talent. Don't worry, Brock will eventually get to the point where he'll be lucky to be booked in a match with the kid who was Braun Strowman's tag partner.

Fortunately, it led to Drew getting his moment in the sun. Plus, Brock's presence means Paul Heyman gets to deliver an epic promo.

Brock's not going to let that happen. He'll just go home to his farm and Sable and smoke cigars wrapped in all the cash Vince is paying him to be a part-timer.

As for Brock, I am guessing that it was a case of, "Let's put Brock over as unstoppable machine - oh, wait, look, somebody eliminated him - oh, wait, look again, the guy who eliminated him ended up winning; gee, I wonder who he's going to choose to wrestle at WrestleMania?"

If anyone here had WWE stock, hope you weren't planning on selling it in the next few days. WWE's Chief Financial Officer and Chief Revenue Officer both just left, effective immediately.

That's...not likely to be good news and the market appears to be reacting like it's bad news. Meltzer is speculating that it's a scapegoat firing for upcoming bad Q4 financials, but I tend to think firing two C-level execs is more than just an off quarter.

I have a few, but I wasn't planning on selling any time soon. Besides, with WWE Stock, I also get the Annual Report, which has a habit of telegraphing who's going to get a push in the near future.

Paige's semi-autobiographical movie Fighting With My Family is on Hulu now. I watched it, and it's no Oscar winner. It's more like if Hallmark Channel produced Rocky. It went for heart over edge, and could have included more zaniness.

Not to say it didn't have its moments. Paige's parents are wrestlers, and so is her brother Zack. He knocked up a girl, so they had to get married. They have a family dinner, and Zack asks his dad to hold back on the crude behavior because her parents are kind of "posh." Dad (played by Nick Frost) opens up right away and tells them he was in prison for eight years for violent robbery. At the end of the movie, they show video interviews with the real Paige's family, and her dad tells the interviewer the same thing. They used what he said as Frost's script for that scene. Frost is outstanding, by the way. There's one scene where he's talking on the phone with a booker while another wrestler is sitting next to him. Frost turns to the wrestler and says "Ay, 'e wants to know if you'll take a bowling ball to the willy!" The wrestler reluctantly agrees, and Frost picks up a bowling ball and smacks him right right in the genitals with it. The wrestler looks like he's about to cry and Frost tells him to breathe out slowly. Then he picks up the phone, and says "'E's in."

The movie gets a little sappy at times with Zack, who really really wanted to be in WWE but got turned down. Paige tries to get him hired, but to no avail. He becomes angry, depressed, gets in bar fights, etc. Then he decides he needs to turn his life around, and gathers neighborhood kids and trains them to be wrestlers, including one blind kid. The closing credits include a "where are they now" chyron, which reads that the blind kid went on to be a professional wrestler, but they don't show his name. Did they run out of budget and not afford a royalty for a blind person?

Vince Vaughn plays the antagonist role as the talent scout and merciless trainer. In one scene, The Rock is giving Paige a pep talk before she debuts on RAW. As they leave his dressing room, Vince Vaughn's character is in the hallway and Rock says "Hey, sex tape!" Paige asks him why he called him "sex tape" and Rock replies "Because he makes you famous." Ironic considering Paige has a few sex tapes herself.

Zelina Vega played AJ Lee, and they recreated the match where Paige wins the title from her. I remember the match and it looked really random, having Lee lose the Divas title to an unknown. This was before I watched NXT, so I had no idea who Paige was at the time. She didn't make much of an impression on me then, but she got a lot better in short order.

I recognized a couple other wrestlers in training montage scenes, like Dave "The Bomber" Mastiff and Kip Sabian. There were also some people from EVOLVE and PROGRESS. There's also a scene with Big Show and Shamus arguing at the buffet table, but I think that was it for actual wrestlers in the movie. They otherwise changed the names of Paige's NXT comrades. One of the girls was named Jeri-Lynn, and I'm wondering if that was intended to be a nod to Jerry Lynn of ECW fame? He retired in 2013 and now produces for AEW, and there's no mention if he crossed paths with Paige on his Wiki page.

During NXT UK, Tom Phillips said "Nigel McGuinness is at a magician's retreat and taxidermy symposium..."

Wait, what?

Dear Cody,

can you book a match between Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin?

It'll be the battle of the don't cares: Darby doesn't care if he's about to die, and Orange doesn't care period.

So Darby rides his Skateboard of Death to the ring, body half skeleton and cryptic verse tattoos, vaults over the top rope in his duster, lands, and somersalts right in front of Orange Cassidy, who has his hands in his pockets. Darby gives him the Thousand Yard Stare, and Orange looks unconcerned. Darby goes for a roundhouse kick, and Orange steps back, completely avoiding it. Darby does some wicked looking martial arts strikes, and Orange just moves to where the punches aren't with minimal effort. He still hasn't taken his hands out of his pockets. Darby grabs Orange and throws him over the top rope. Orange lands on his feet, hands still pockets. Darby jumps to the top turnbuckle and deliver a corkscrew reverse plancha. Orange just steps out of the way and Darby crashes on the concrete.

Meltzer gives it 7 stars. Make this happen, Cody!

Are you cross-posting to try and catch Rhodes' eyes somewhere on the net, or do you think Cody will see this here?

Wait, what?
Reminds me of the Meng Ai running gag on WWE pay-per-views.

Orange Cassidy vs Suzuki from NJPW is booked for Joey Janella's Spring Break, if you really want to know what OC vs a crazy person who likes pain is going to go.

You never know. I once got an email from Rodney Dangerfield after I posted about him in a Howard Stern forum.

On the million-to-one chance it does happen, I can shamelessly take credit for it.

That's down in Tampa during WM, and not televised as far as I can tell. I'm not that dedicated a mark.

Dang, how did AEW get Jeff Cobb? He's been in RoH up until last week. If his contract just expired, that was some fast work getting him in AEW with practically no days off. Their montage didn't show his RoH work, so maybe they're pulling a WWE-style willful ignorance of competition filter.

Cobb is on a day-to-day basis with RoH, and supposedly is also not signed to AEW except on a by-appearance basis. Of course, that might have changed since this morning, but that's the latest I've heard.

Remember when we used to post predictions and reviews of Takeover events? Then they became "I watched it" and eventually nothing. Never fear, I shall bear the sputtering torch.

My favorite was actually Tegan Nox vs Dakota Kai. Why? Because both girls were groomed to be the next Bayley, the cute girls who dress in bright colors and glitter and smile and hug. Now they're badass biker chicks who break each other's teeth. Kudos to them for pulling off those transformations.

The preshow had Mansoor quibbling with Sam Roberts. What happened to him? He won the Greatest Ever Battle Royal so WWE could have their home boy link to their Muslim audience, then he lost a match on NXT and that's it. He's talented enough to work on prime time, but they seem to go all or nothing on him.

I mark out for the Broserweights, mainly because of their clash of personalities. They shouldn't work, but somehow they do. I can see them feuding with each other while still tag champs, then splitting a pitcher of beer after a huge brawl.

I knew Cole would cheat to retain his title, but I'm not too crazy about Gargano's swerve. He's always been my favorite good guy because he's such a great victim. They teased making him a heel before vs Aleister Black, but it didn't hold. Now he's getting revenge on Ciampa I suppose, but it's like turning Casper the Friendly Ghost heel. Maybe Garg is tired of being the babyface and wants to diversify. It worked for Shawn Michaels, so who knows?

I don't know if I'll ever get tired of Lee vs Dijakovic (apologies if misspelled, I'm not looking it up). Those two just click. The show was well booked, and they avoided doing the same spots every match (I'm looking at you, AEW). Heel Gargano is going to be a hard sell. I think it's going to take quite a bit more than simply turning on Ciampa.
