Do we have a books thread? I'm wrapping up a re-read and can't remember seeing one before.

For the last 2 seasons I created threads alongside the non-spoiler threads for show/book discussion

Season 6
Season 7

Other people made threads for previous seasons, you'll have to dig around

Thanks. I realized I never saw one get bumped. Just this one. I mean, I could have searched myself, but I didn't even know if it was worth doing, like if you all remembered off the tops of your heads.

My least favorite part of doing a re-read is having my curiosity piqued and knowing I won't get answers for months, if not years. (The upcoming Fire And Blood book might answer a few questions, like what happened to Aegon I's wife in Dorne but not like... who poisoned the locusts.)

Fans of Stephen Dillane, who played Stannis, may want to tune in to the third season of his crime drama The Tunnel: http://www.pbs.org/program/tunnel/season-3/

You'll know when they've finished filming when Kit shaves. He still probably has pick-ups to do.

True. In GoT men were REAL men and giant zombie ice spiders were REAL giant zombie ice spiders.

But they're selling these goblets to namby pamby present day nerds who will sue. So do the goblets come with a disclaimer about "Not to be drunk from"?

"Modern pewter from Western countries is safe" to drink from. Old pewter made with lead? Not so much.

Have faith in the Lord of Light; fire burns away impurities. ROFL!

As long as we're here,I want to change my prediction. I said that Varys would turn out to be Rhaegar, but no, it's Jaqen H'ghar. Unless they are all three the same. Also possible.

I donít know about others, but for me personally, yes, the books will be the ďrealĒ version because thereís an enormous amount of detail that they would never be able to put into a TV series.

Itís not over for me until I know whatís happened with all the characters and minor plotlines that are still ongoing that (1) were left out of the TV series or (3) canít be resolved in exactly the same way as the TV series resolved them because things are just different in the books.

The books will be the real story from the books. Although the show and the books are very, very similar, they are also very, very, VERY different. Why are you shitting on the books? One is not superior to the other.

P.S., he will die before he finishes the books.

GRRM has more money than he knows what to do with. Literally -- if you follow his blog, he periodically does things like buy the original Robby the Robot prop, or purchase some warehouse and turn it into a studio for struggling artists, or buy land for a wolf conservation non-profit, or buy the local movie theater because it's about to close and (by all appearances) run it at a loss. Maybe he's tired of writing, or maybe not (I hope not!), or maybe he just really wrote himself into a corner that he's having a hell of a time getting out of coherently, but I don't think he's motivated by money.

people with a lot of money don't mind getting more. For example I don't see Zuckerberg retiring any time soon.

Don't have a problem with the books at all. Tried to read them but 900 pages is just too much for me.

Like someone said he hired a "ghostwriter" to finish the story and that's HBO.

Some very wealthy people continue to work, either because they enjoy what they are doing, or because their ego demands that they accumulate as much as possible. (I don't know which category Zuckerberg is in.) But lots of very wealthy people just do whatever pleases them. Bill Gates has been more focused on spending his wealth than making more for years. (Of course, he still makes a lot.) If Martin is tired of writing the series, more money isn't going to be much of a motivator. I'm sure he's still getting a ton of income from royalties etc.

why doesn't he just write more books that are shorter? He could put out 500 page books that are easier/faster to write. There is no reason he has to write these 900 page monsters other than his own preference .

Also what is more fun, hanging out with Hollywood celebs at parties/premieres/etc. or staring at your laptop all day trying to write a book?

It's interesting that the saga is now so complicated that Martin himself has to check with two "superfans" to keep the facts straight.

they finished filming with actors a few months back so now it's just CGI they are working on. Maybe a few extra actor scenes could be filmed now if needed.

And yet Martin released a new book this week set in the Westeros universe so it's not like he's not writing.

Anyone else reading Fire and Blood? I'm not far into it (just past Aegon I and to his two asshole sons and Aenys's kids). It's the same general info as Sons of the Dragon, but I didn't get a chance yet to see if it's EXACTLY the same prose. If so, then The Dance of the Dragons will be the same.

So I'm not that into it because it's not anything "new" yet. Maybe I'll like it more when I get to someone I don't know as much about. Or even Aegon V. I know a lot about Egg and bits and pieces of adult Aegon, but I would like some more details. I know we won't get Summerhall answers, though. We certainly didn't get Visenya answers.

I'm reading it and enjoying it, but it's right up my alley - worldbuilding for a universe I adore (I've been reading ASOIAF since the 90s). I recognize that that's not everyone's cup of tea.

Oops. Not Visenya. The other sister-wife, the one who allegedly died in Dorne on dragon impact. *cough cough*

My ebook wasn't displaying the fancy fonts correctly. I thought it was a coding glitch so I spent way too much time today tweaking the book and it would just not work. Finally I tested out my own fonts and they worked, so I just downloaded the listed fonts in the book anew and replaced the ones already there with the new ones. I've never had that happen before.

Anyway, I didn't get too much further in after my tweak, download, open, wrong, delete, tweak, download, open, wrong, tweak etc exercise. I'm up to Jahaerys and it's jolting because all of a sudden there's a couple pages about his mother. She was a big part of the Maegor and Aenys story, so learning more about her would have made sense back then? Maybe? And even if it does fit better here narratively instead of chronologically, how it was done was confusing.
