Being the last poster of a thread and then it dies

Have you ever stumbled upon a thread that was like five pages long with lots of recent activity, then you decide to chime in, and then the thread just dies? And you think, "Uh, was it something I said?" And no one speaks in the thread ever again.

Doesn't that leave you with a weird feeling? It does to me.

Anyways, just wanted to share this. It's happened to me and I always wondered what everyone else thought about that. Or if it's something people think about at all.

Deep down it makes me feel sad. Like, I didn't do enough to keep things going. Oh well.

*sighs*

Doesn't bother me; usually the conversation has run its course by the time I get there (an hour or two later), so I just make a comment of some sort and move on. Some perverse part of me enjoys it: "Look, Martha, I've killed another one!" Then I stamp the side of my computer--like WWII fighter planes in some old flick--and see what other mischief I can get into.

I think someone should come up with a term for people who kills threads just by posting to them. Maybe "Thread killer"?[/deadpan]

OP: you have the wrong attitude. Instead realize that your post was the definitive statement that no one could possibly disagree with.

IT WAS YOU!?!?

Yeah, I kinda get the same feeling, like I am a johnny-come-lately to the party. I dread having my username be the last one appearing in the Forum view for that thread. It will be there forever.

This has happened to me quite a bit. I think it's because I don't spend a lot of time here (not as much as some of you, anyway), and by the time I notice a thread it has usually run its course.

Gee, I hope somebody adds a post after this one.

Back in the early days of the board, a term was actually coined for this.

Molosters = MOst Last pOSTERS

It originated in Post #7 of Thread killers

I don't take it personally, I do get disappointed sometimes though.

Mainly because, if I'm jumping in late to a thread, it's because I have a point to make that hasn't already been brought up. Which is rare when the thread is more than two pages long.

Iíve killed my fair share and, yes, it bothers me a bit.

I think this thread will be interesting in that it will probably never die and thus will offset the OPís angst.

Well I want in then. It will be nice to contribute to a thread and not see my name in the Last Post column the rest of the day. (There's one there now.)

A similar but somehow even more depressing case is when I kill a thread, but it seems it was only "mostly dead". Someone two weeks later comes along and revives it, which is bad enough, but then they ignore my last post! And then it gets new life, but no one discusses my comment.

This seems to happen to me quite a bit, so I went into my CP and did some poking around (as a (mostly) lurker this wasn't too daunting of a task). I had about 580 subscribed threads - meaning I posted in them - and I counted 40 where I had the last post (about 7%). My "favorite" was a thread asking about Motherboard advice - I was first and last as nobody responded (learned my lesson about posting after work on a Friday).

I have done this enough that I also have considered starting a thread about it. When it happens I end up saying to myself, "I AM THREAD KILLER!" like a Spartan warrior.

Another old thread - this one from 2004 - on the subject, with lots of statistics.

Personally memorable in that it revealed that I was one of the most effective threadkillers of that era.

It looks like I may have killed this thread about abortion - I wasn't the last post, but I appear to have struck the killing blow. My feelings on the matter are mixed - I don't like to see a debate I'm in die, but if it has to die it's best that it ends with me doing a mike drop.

Often, I don't even dive into a thread with 4 or 5 pages, because whatever I hoped to add was already done by somebody else. There are exceptions, if I'm really interested in it, or it looks amusing.

I usually completely forget I've posted in a thread after I post.

I'm sure I've killed threads, I just haven't noticed.

This seems to happen to me a lot, so I did some data mining just now. Looking at all non-Sticky threads from GQ, GD, Elections, Cafe Society, Game Room, IMHO, Mundane, and Pit which were last bumped between June 16 and June 30, Dopers with five or more kills are:
9 by ftg
9 by Chronos
8 by Elendil's Heir
7 by Leo Bloom
6 by Nava
6 by MrDibble
6 by DSYoungEsq
6 by Beckdawrek
5 by lingyi
5 by Telemark
5 by Northern Piper
5 by Colibri
I was pleased to note that I had only 3 kills during that interval. The list is of course unfair to Mods who are credited with a Kill when they close a thread.
