New "Fantasy Island" movie

Just noticed they are making the old tv show into a movie. LINK

When I first saw this I was hoping for a tv remake and a new weekly series. Basically turning it into a horror movie.

Yep, they're giving it the Banana Splits treatment.

I'm not buying Michael Pena as Mr. Rourke, whether the friendly but omnipotent original version, or this twisted one.

The original wasn't all sunshine and rainbows 24/7.

(that scene scared the shit out of me as a kid, which is why I remebered it existed 40 years later)

There were also the two episodes in which Roddy McDowall played the Devil.

I remember watching the original Fantasy Island movie. Mr. Rourke was not a nice guy- the entire premise had a dark undertone of The Monkey's Paw, almost as if he were a djinn.

Didn't it get sanitized and mellower over the course of the show?

Oh.

No Tattoo replacement.

Considering whoever that is playing Mr. Rourke, they might as well have gotten Brian Windhorst. or Arash Madani
(Would've been way cheaper, too.)

Also - not too curious in finding out how the resort's damage control team spin their way out of the poor optics of constantly killing the guests.

If the elevator button you're asked to press has what looks like a snake symbol on it, you might want to think twice about actually pressing it. I mean, unless you're really into snakes or something.

I recall enjoying the first few episodes of the remake staring from 1998-99 with Malcom McDowell. I liked the tone and preferred it to the re-boot of the Love Boat.

I would have like to have seen more of that version and need to sit down and give it a re-watch. As for the movie, I'll probably catch it at some point. The tailer did get my interest.

Too bad. He wouldn't have needed heel lifts for the role. Could even go barefoot. Hey, how's the weather down there?

It's currently in 4th place for the weekend. Surprising given it's 9% at RT and has a C- CinemaScore.

(Could be worse, could be the Fey-Ferrell flick Downhill, which got a D CinemaScore. Such a score for a regular film is very uncommon. It may finish in the top ten which is actually above some predictions!)

It was apparently made on a $7m budget, which I figure means that things could be a lot worse for it; it doesnít need to do all that great to, uh, do all that great.

It's Blumhouse, right?

That's their secret. Horror movies, done fairly cheaply - but professionally - lead to a modest but satisfying profit. Make one or two per year and roll to glory. If one becomes a hit by surprise, hey! Bonus!

I can't argue with their approach. They're subverting the 'blockbuster' trope. Hell, it's what Woody Allen, Kevin Smith and so forth have been doing for years. Make a movie, don't spend to much and cash checks.

I'll also point out how useful they can be to actors.

Blumhouse - I just looked at their wiki page - because they don't want to spend a lot of money (comparatively) give lead opportunities to actors who might not otherwise get a chance to lead a movie. It provides a chance for actors to show their stuff.

Yeah, and it's going to make over $12M this weekend. Marketing adds quite a bit, possibly more than the production costs based on the number of ads I've seen. Figure if it grosses $25M in the theaters and does comparably on video, this will make a nice profit.

Didn't realize this was Blumhouse. (The Sony name appears more prominently since they are releasing it.) Explains a lot. They are getting quite savvy about knowing their market.

For a fun comparison, thereís Dolittle: sure, it grossed over $20M domestic in its first weekend, and went past $40M by the end of the second and $50M by the end of the third; but thatís nothing, that plus $100M overseas would still be a flop even without factoring in the advertising; how many Islands could you make for the cost of one Dolittle?

(Oh, and, uh, I donít think Fey is in Downhill.)
