I would vote for Trump if the other candidate were ...

At a gathering this weekend some people were playing a game and I thought it was amusing. The challenge was to propose a person that would motivate the group to vote for Trump. To set some ground rules to make it a bit harder, the person had to:
  • Be alive
  • Not be a convicted felon
  • Be eligible to become president (age >35, natural born citizen)
  • Not be a politician

So this rules out people like Genghis Khan, Charles Manson, Honey Boo Boo, and Steve King in Iowa.

It was a tough game. Dog the Bounty hunter was a tough call, but then he was disqualified because of the felony thing.

I can envision a candidate worse than Trump. And if such a candidate were to run, and make it to the general, I would vote third party (or write-in, if need be), and then (presuming that the third party didn't make it) would flee the country.

It would have to be someone like Jerry Falwell, Jr. or Franklin Graham.

Trump panders to the religious right, but he doesn’t believe any of it.

I forgot to add - for the thought exercise there are no third party or abstentions allowed. Fleeing is possible, but you still need to vote. Actually, the game was mostly about proposing people so the others can decide.

I think this is it. I mean, even Pence could be worse for the country.

That was my thoughts as well. My call would be Kenneth Copeland. In every way as vile as Trump, but that extra seasoning of dominionism.

In that case no I wouldn't wuss out and vote third party. If the only viable candidates on the ballot are Trump or worse than Trump, then I will patriotically vote the lesser of two evils, followed by a two hour shower and an evening of binge drinking.

I'd almost rather slit my own throat, but I suppose the following folks might qualify:

Mike Huckabee
Santorum
David Duke
Mitch McConnell

Mitch McConnell wins just because I don't want to think about it anymore.

I propose Mitch McConnell. Or his wife, Elaine Chao. Or with his wife as VP.

not what you'd expect - great minds think alike

For some reason the OP stipulated that the choice be "not a politician."

In your "not be a politician" clause, is that limited to "have held elected office ever", or does it include "has ever been employed in a government role at some level"?

I think someone like* David Duke, openly espousing a white supremacist or nazi manifesto, or eugenics, would do it for me.

*he's held public office and I don't know enough about his group to know who else would qualify.

It was elected. So like, Condoleeza Rice was mentioned and everyone would take her over Trump.

Kanye came up too . Most people picked Kanye in that matchup

I'd probably take Trump over O.J. Simpson OR the Zodiac Killer .

ETA: Of course O.J. was convicted. Just not of murder.

I'd say choices like Kenneth Copeland and Jerry Falwell, Jr. would be interesting tests of the GOP's willingness to fall in line behind a genuinely awful President of their own party, but Trump's already done the stress test on that. It's hard to imagine that they wouldn't fall in line.

The one, erm, saving grace of those evangelical nutcases is that their fanbase, while intense, would be a bit more narrow than Trump's. While white evangelicals form a large part of Trump's base, that consistent 40-42% support is a good bit bigger than white evangelicalism. I think the GOP with one of those guys in the White House would get totally crushed in the next election, well beyond what happened last November. So I'd say Trump is worse than them on that account.

If he or she is running for President then by definition they are a politician, so there's no valid answer.

I'd consider Al Sharpton to be a politician. He's run for office a number of times.

That aside, I'd say that, short of starting a war (which Trump came within an ace of doing just days ago) any left-of-center figure would be far less dangerous than Trump, for the simple reason that not only would Republicans be united against him, but Congressional Democrats would also keep him in check.

I'll leave alone the question of whether Trump or Sharpton would be a worse dictator, but as President, our small-d democratic processes would keep a Sharpton in check to a much greater degree than they do for Trump.

That is kind of a catch-22 that you don't notice when there is alcohol involved. You just gotta go with it Not a politician - current hypothetical run excluded.

I think that's why there was the no politicians rule. Because without that, it's too easy and that is sadface. It was a fun game, like Oprah Winfrey and Dennis Rodman. Both of whom got a majority over Trump in the group I was with We were on the fence with Vince McMahon.

Shit, I read it backwards - I thought it said no NON-politicians!

Okay, then:

Any one of the Phelps family
Courtney Love
Jack Dean Tyler
Mama June
David Miscavige
Bob Nutting

Does David Duke count as a politician or not? He's run for office a number of times.

I would vote for Trump if the other candidate were ...

Steve Bannon. I believe he’s smarter than Trump and way more evil.

Alex Jones. He’s not smart at all but also a fucking lunatic. Somehow worse than Trump.

I don't know any of those 5 off the top of my head except Courtney Love. I'd pick her.

David Duke was elected to the state Congress of Louisiana, so he is DQd.

This game is easy. Literally think of like ten random LA celebs, and odds are at least half of them are nutjobs and would make worse presidents than Trump.

It seems like the intent is to make Trump look better by comparing him to people in a totally different world. It's like asking who you'd rather have operating on you; the worst surgeon in the world or a badger? Well, okay, I'd pick the worst surgeon in the world - and there are literally millions of other things I would pick him over. But it's a meaningless comparison; none of those other things are claiming to have any medical knowledge at all. The worst surgeon in the world, on the other hand, is out there actually presenting himself as a surgeon and performing surgery. He should be compared to other people who identify themselves as surgeons. And Trump should be compared to other people who might conceivably be a candidate.

It was actually the opposite. The four examples in the OP of people who were DQd came about because that's who the folks came up with that would force them to vote for Trump. Ghengis Kahn! But when people like Dennis Rodman came up, the majority picked Rodman. I don't think that makes Trump look better.

Well you've probably got my vote Bone, but remember: if you're running against Trump in the 2020 General Election, and there are no third parties, you're running as [whisper]a Democrat[/whisper].

(I'm sure it'll be relatively painless.)

That's right, head. Jeffs would be a good candidate too, but he's ineligible due to being in prison. (Finally!)
