Are threads ever held for moderator review before they are posted?

In the current Pit thread about Ilhan Omar, the OP returned after a hiatus and posted this:

I was not aware that threads were held for review. Does this happen? What would cause this to happen?

I've been posting here for almost 20 years, and I don't recall ever having seen that. I've seen people post in this forum to ask if certain thread topics were acceptable. But not what you're describing.

Yes it happens, but it's invisible to users. There are various flags that can cause a post to held for review. It's not common - I see it about once a month or less. Probably less.

Care to expose to us plebeians what these flags might be?

Actually we get a handful of these every day. Almost all of them are spams. About once every couple of months or so we'll get one that isn't a spam. Since this relates to how we block spam around here, we are not going to give out details about exactly what triggers the filter. We don't want to make it any easier for the folks in Spambladesh.

Our admin can also flag posts for moderator review, though she rarely does so.

Perhaps the post was about $100,000,000 he had to move out of Nigeria.

So do any mods wanna chime in and confirm to the people calling me a liar that my thread wasn’t posted immediately after I hit the post thread button.

Because that would be really great.

In fact as far as I can tell it took more than 48 hours.

New posts didn’t show it. Refreshing “the pit” didn’t show it.

And I’m pretty dang sure I saw a box/message that said something about needing a “review” or “approval” or some such because it caused me to immediately check multiple times. Whatever message came up it alerted me to the fact that my thread wasn’t going to post to the board immediately.

I’m not lying and I don’t really enjoy being called a liar.

I PM'd a mod a little while ago, and they told me that your thread WAS flagged, Annoyed. I asked privately because I didn't want to imply that I was accusing you of being dishonest. I can state, however, that what you say is true.

I can confirm that the thread in question was flagged for moderator review. Generally we try to get to these things quickly, but in this case it slipped through the cracks and took a while to be approved (thread posted 07-20-2019, 08:32 AM and approved 07-22-2019, 07:19 AM).

Not here, but Monty called him one in the Pit, which I doubt is gonna get enforced, since almost anything goes in there.

Not in this thread, no. Other threads on this very same topic, yes, multiple times.

Thanks! I'm much better on Monty Python than I am The Aviator (?).

It was a 2004 film about Hughes, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

I had to Google it, like most people I forgot it ever existed even though it was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 5.

Mods: as long as you're reviewing threads before they post, would it be a big imposition to ask one of you to do a quick check on my spelling, grammar, and syntax? Thx.

Also, make my jokes funnier. Maybe turn the wittiness knob up a few notches.

I'm an engineer. Do you really want an engineer to review your posts for spelling and grammar errors?

(for those who aren't aware, engineers are notorious for bad spelling and grammar)

If you can keep that enormous iron horse rolling down the tracks, then your spelling and grammar is good enough for me.

ETA: I'd now like to suggest this thread be closed, as it's run off the rails.

Huh, I don't think I've ever seen one of those flagged threads that wasn't actually spam.

IIRC a couple have come up in passing here in ATMB; details escape me. But I was aware it could happen and sometimes did; I even have some vague memory of the explanation.

I think that what may have added fuel to the dire so to speak, at least in the Pit thread mentions, was that Annoyed didn't know his thread had gone live. If this was the first time it happened or the umpteenth I don't know. But that is where things started to get ----- not nasty by Pit standards but a little on the cringe side for some of us.

While you are worked ten times harder than your pay grade ( ) dictates it may not be a bad idea to shoot a PM to the OPs in such cases letting them know that said thread has indeed gone live. It could help in various ways so threads don't look to be abandoned by their creators.

It's a rare enough occurrence that whichever moderator approved it probably didn't even realize that the OP wouldn't be automatically notified. Now we know, so when it happens again mumblety-many years in the future, a PM probably would be a good idea.
