I'm not sure it ever worked. I thing he might have stayed with Xykon out of immaturity and insecurity, and not because of any magic. Xykon gave him a home, so he stayed.

The charm was specifically only to trigger if Redcloak ever turned on Xykon, and has nothing to do with him continuing to hang out with Team Evil.

Since you're discussing it openly, I'll go ahead and ask. How is it a major part of the plot? I don't remember Redcloak ever turning, and wouldn't that mean that reading the book was actually necessary?

Hell, I'd completely forgotten it happened. It's one panel, and it seemed to contradict everything Xykon says at the end about why he knows that Redcloak won't defy him.

(Though, personally, I say Xykon is wrong. It really is only the mission that motivates him. That's the something that he has to justify his actions with.)

But Xykon was saying that to Redcloak - so it may have been something he was saying for effect rather than because he fully believed it.

There's a balance between Xykon and Redcloak that both recognize. I think Xykon is smart enough to realize that Redcloak is smarter than he is while also knowing that he is more powerful than Redcloak.

Gosh, now I get it. I think the preferred spelling is Kronos or Cronus. Still, very clever and funny! (as are the responses!)

It isn't yet a major part of the plot, because your memory is correct, and Redcloak hasn't yet turned, and so that book is not necessary. Presumably, if Redcloak does eventually turn on Xykon in the main strip, Rich will introduce that plot point in the main strip at some time at or before then.

Chronos (the personification of time) and Kronos (the lord of the Titans, father of Zeus) are actually two different entities. Chronos (the poster) has been showing admirable restraint by not reminding us of that.

I knew this and I actually hesitated to make the joke because I also knew, on this board, somebody else would catch it. But I figured even back in classical Greek times, people confused Χρόνος with Κρόνος so I decided to go with it.

Yeah, it was too good a joke to ruin. And besides, the boundaries between different gods are always a bit blurry anyway, so there might be some sense in which Χρόνος was Κρόνος, after all.

While we're on the subject of MiTD.

Redcloak thinks he knows what MiTD is. Redcloak knows that Xykon is keeping him around for a reason, even if that reason involves whimsy. Redcloak may suspect that Xykon has hypnotized him. I say this because Redcloak has had years to think about Xykon and his capabilities.

Xykon intuits that Redcloak may suspect something, but doesn't care. Redcloak understands this.

It's because she treats MitD with respect, and converses with him. It's as though she sees him as an actual being, with motivations, desires, and reasons for the things he does.

The way O-Chul did.

Although, it is a limited sort of respect, that recognizes only the possibility of him being on the "beast" side of the master/beast dichotomy.

And it's really sad that that's still more than most of Monster-San's associates.

OK, now I'm sure Rich is just trolling* us.

I'm reminded of the cat who's currently boarding with my mom-- She's so affectionate that she actually refuses to be fed until she's had her noogie.

Oh, and confirmation that Oona is a bugbear, though I think that was pretty well consensus by now.

I guess at least Oona (and maybe Redcloak) understands Greyview so MitD doing so ain't no big thing.

I sense that Rich is poking fun at the people trying to figure out who the MiTD is.

"Quick, kids: figure out which monsters have "trenchant political analysis" as a special attack!"

Hah! "Trenchant political analysis" as a Special Attack. I guffawed!

I am also pleased to see The Giant correctly spelled the plural of "shaman" as "shamans." It used to always bug me how often World of Warcraft (both the game and its players) got that wrong.

Hah, second webcomic I've read today that needs a trypophobia trigger warning (I've been playing catchup with CtrlAltDel, which has this lovely fellow in a recent story). I love it, suitably annoying dungeon concept.

I was just thinking that the smart move would be to have the entrance be "none of the above" (see also: the skeletal Xykon duplicates at the attack on Azure City).

Welcome to the tomb of Tal Rasha Kraagor.

There are 98 unmarked doors, and 16 marked ones. Plus whatever's off-screen

But in the two cases where we've seen that kind of duplicity (the Xykon duplicates and the fake desert gate location) they were created by people who were already disposed towards duplicity (Redcloak and Girard Draketooth). Kraagor's tomb was developed by Serini Toormuck and her nature, from what we've seen, was very straightforward. Serini built her gate protection around the principle of powerful creatures not concealment.

That's a very interesting thought. Didn't the Order of the Scribble show them working to seal the gate outside, with Kraagor getting turned to stone due to the sealing spell? That would seem to suggest that he's sitting right on top of the gate.

No, he wasn't turned to stone by the sealing spell. The statue came later (see #276). Notice though that the Snarl was fought out in the open, thus the Rift was out in the open, so it probably is sealed by Kraagor's statue anyway. And not in any of the caves.

The gate being in/near/under the statue would be particularly funny given the time Xykon just spent standing there "decorating" it.

The new artwork for Xykon takes a little to get used to. When we last saw him in #901, he still had the giant bottom jaw with the neck blocked. New Xykon has a smaller, thinner jaw with the neck bone visible. The eye sockets are clearly sunken with a brow ridge creating a more normal skull shape instead of the lightbulb look from before. I don't think the switch is wrong, just a little jarring at first. More evil, less comical.
